Knicks · Knicks 3 point shooting unsustainable? (page 1)

ramtour420 @ 2/6/2013 12:23 PM
Earlier this season everyone was saying how we could not possibly keep shooting and making so many 3's.
Well the season is more than half way over so I think we can make projections about it as our sample size is now of adequate size.
Here is a pretty informative chart that compares us to our teams in NBA when it comes to shooting the 3.

Lol the NYK graph is like a straight line.

Wow take a look at Mia.

Melo alone has a big impact on this, seeing he's a career 33% shooting at 41% this year, while attempting nearly 7 threes a game.

If it lasts the whole year, the Knicks can ride him to the Finals.
If it doesn't, well...

Ray Allen is their Melo, but he's shooting just as he's always has.
Surely a great pickup for them.

Thanks for posting Ramtour. I started the thread alluded to, "Our 3-point shooting probably isn't sustainable" back on Dec 3 when we were 12 - 4. I was wondering more recently whether our 3-pt shooting has held up as a team and how it held up for players, and this thread made me take a look. By the way, the original thread was on page 24 in case anyone else is as devoid of useful things to do as I and wants to look back (I couldn't figure out how to link to it).

Anyway, as usual, one can make most any point one wants to with statistics. My view: we have not sustained our 3-point shooting, and that's a big reason why we haven't kept up our winning pct.

We shot 42% in Nov and were 11 and 3, 37% in December and were 10 and 5 and 36% in Jan when we were 7 and 6. Also, we scored 102.7 ppg in Nov, 101.9 in Dec. and 97.1 in Jan. Obviously, tons of other factors at play here, but there does seem to be a correlation between 3 pt pct, pts scored and wins.

As for the performance by players, I'd speculated that it would be touch for Felton, JR Brewer and, to a lesser extent, Kidd, to keep up their 40%-plus shooting from 3 because their career numbers were way off from that. All of those guys are under 40% now. Only JR, Novak, Prigioni and Shumpert are over 40% now, the last 2 with small samples.

In sum, what the charts Ramtour posted show is that we consistently shoot a whole bunch of 3's and shoot them well. That said, we don't consistently shoot them crazy well, like we were doing in November, and when our pct drops 4 or 5 points, we look more like a 50 win team than a 60 win team. Not too shabby either way.

Oops. When I wrote, "Only JR, Novak, Prigioni and Shumpert are over 40% now" I mean, "Only Melo, Novak ..." JR is down to 34%.

Well actually Jr is shooting below his norms. He needs to really stay away from dribbling then shooting 3s.

interesting graphics but it would be nice to see the same graphs from prior seasons to see how often teams sustain the 3-point shooting rate.

my point is that as the season progresses and legs tire the first thing to go down is the 3-point shooting percentages.

can you provide the link?

Well we didn't sustain the rate we were hitting when we were 18-6, that is a fact. Yes we're a top of the league now but dollars to donuts we don't hit 39% from 3 in the Playoffs.

yes the playoffs are when better defensive squads are in your grill for an entire series and the 3-point shooting requires the crispest of ball movement. we are still trying to get to consistently good ball movement like we see from the spurs and celtics. the 3-point shooting is bound to suffer a bit and more than a bit if the ball movement is not great. trouble is we have 3 main players whose hands can get awfully sticky at times, and at the wrong times....

knickscity @ 2/6/2013 3:18 PM
Speaking of threes.....

Conclusion

Even after accounting for shooter movement and the strength of the defense, the corner three still comes out looking like the easiest three. The big difference with the short distance corner three comes when defenders aren’t playing strong defense. If a shot is launched from the wing or top of the key, the defense might be able to get away with not getting a hand up. But if that three-point attempt comes from the corner, anything but great defense can turn an average shooter into a 40+ percent shooter.

San Antonio last year and this year, pretty much identical.
