Knicks · 3 questions regarding Raymond Felton (page 1)

Posted this in the Portland game thread but just in no one ever wants to look at that depressing thread here it is.

1) Is it fair to ask a guy only making $4M a season to

- carry the load offensively
- set up teammates
- set the tone on D

??

What other guys making that $ are expected to do the same for their team? This is not a rhetorical question. I would actually like to see if our expectations might be a bit too high.
Just for kick I looked at Atlanta on hoopshype salaries page, Devin Harris makes $8M per.

Courtney Lee and Jason Terry make $5M.

2) Was it even wise for us to give Felton 3 years and a PLAYER option for a 4th?

3) Who were we bidding against? Couldn't we have gotten away with less $, less years or even a team option for year 4?

Kind of reminds me of when the entire league and his own team were afraid to touch Eddy Curry because of that heart health issue thing and we did the same thing with Eddy CUrry. Remember this?

http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/curry_trad...

October 4, 2005 – The Chicago Bulls convey to the New York Knicks the contract of Antonio Davis and the signed-and-traded contract of Eddy Curry. In exchange, New York conveys to Chicago the contracts of Tim Thomas and Michael Sweetney, the signed-and-traded contract of Jermaine Jackson, and New York’s regular second round draft choice in 2007 and 2009.

In addition, New York conveys to Chicago, New York’s 2006 regular first round draft choice on condition that the pick does not actually go to Utah (due to not being number 26-30) and also on condition that New York receives San Antonio’s 2006 regular first round selection (due to being number 11-30).

If New York’s 2006 first round does go to Utah (due to being number 26-30), and New York does receive San Antonio’s 2006 first round pick (due to being number 11-30), New York conveys to Chicago that San Antonio first round selection.

In addition, New York also conveys to Chicago the right to switch first round draft picks with New York in 2007 provided that New York’s first round selection does not go to Utah (is not number 25-30). Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. This trade is conditional upon the players passing their physicals.

Ray is a backup PG at best. Stop expecting big games from a player incapable of it. There are valid reasons why denver and portland did away with him.

A fourth question: why is it that our players always get booed on their returns to former teams? We are a laughing stock

Ray is beat up and out of shape. He's always good for half a season until he gets run into the ground. We've seen this before. Above average for half this season, then falls up and has to rely on his weak jumper for the rest of the year.

Our expectations for Raymond was set when our FO decided to let Lin, our youthful, starting, capable PG, go. With that said I don't want to start another Lin vs
Ray discussion, I'm simply talking about expectations. Ray have had good stretches, but he's been too inconsistent lately and it seems like he has trouble maintaining a high/above average level of play for a whole season.

Ray is a great backup or as denver tried to be a major cog in a platoon system with lots of guys getting minutes. Lawson can't go 40 minutes without getting banged up. Seems Houston is doing similar with Lin.

Ray plays big minutes and shouldering a big load.

I like Ray a lot but he is who he is. This is what 4mil buys these days.

lets be fair, he talked up the game to promote it and he has little to work with 3 starters out.

Rays not great but we don't need him to be if when we have our team.

It is interesting, most of us can agree that Felton is a backup PG. I don't get how management went with him to save money when you need all you can to get by Miami, etc. Now we have a very expensive team that is not looking very good. A lot of our offseason moves, outside of Felton - like bringing in the old guys, are blowing up in our face (which many of us also called). I guess winning it all is not really important to a Billionaire owner, just maintaining a profit. For us fans it's not a business but for players (mostly) and owners it is - guess we should start treating it as such. The less we support their "business", perhaps, then we will start to get what we want?

3 assists last night from our starting pg. pathetic.

As soon as MDA left I couldn't figure out why we brought Felton here.

Felton is solid for what he is being paid. Plus he is still a movable contract.

Yup. Bringing Felton in as our starting PG was a dud decision. Guy doesn't know how to run an offense (which is more than a PnR). And worse, he can't even defend quick guards of any kind (not even top 10 guards for chrissake).

But what surprises me is how tentative our offense has become from the first twenty games. My gut sense is that the opponents have become much better at defending and Woodson doesn't know how to adjust.

We need a PG to create's good shots for the team, attacks and break the opponents DEF down, and facilitates/makes good decisions

I think this is why Lawson/Denver struggled early, they allowed their new acqusition in Iggy to generate/create, while Lawson was playing off the ball
It was not a success and it often lead to the other players standing around too much
This is why speed/quickness/penetration is one of the easiest way's to play off the ball on, because the DEFENSE MUST focus on stopping penetration first, so many things open up after with shooting, cuts, offensive boards/2nd possessions, and that was why many of us enjoyed Lin's run here, it is the CORRECT WAY TO PLAY

*Part of this is on Woodson as he want's to generate Melo in to MVP player that does not have the same skills, BB IQ, and physical abilities such as the elites, his PPG may be close when compared but his skills are not even comparable, another way STATS are manipulated to misleading the truth*

If you are going to take 20-30 shots per game, you have the green light from the coach, and your team mates are constantly looking to giving you the ball, chances are you will put up numbers, reminds me a bit of Stackhouse, Al Harrington, Josh Howard back in the day...

Melo HAS TO PLAY A WAY that ALLOWS HIS TEAM MATES to play off of his abilities
not focus on trying to get a basket
his knee and brain did not stop him from taking contested half court heaves *WITH MUCH TIME LEFT ON THE SHOT CLOCK*, as they might look heroic when he hits him but it is fools gold

This was part of the reason why we had success early, he posted up, shot the ball when he had room, or just moved the ball right away
We have been figured our offensively and defensively and Woodson has not made ANY ADJUSTMENTS, no one cared either cause we were #1 #2 #3, well what # will we be when this season is over?

NOT a PG that makes Melo and Amare happy
NOT a PG that dribbles up the court and hands the ball to Melo
NOT a PG that says YES to MELO everytime he wants the ball, he has to make the correct decisions for the highest % shot that has the balls to say NO to Melo as the game isn't about him *a reason why Iman will probably not develop into a PG here*

He is flawed mentally and physically, he cannot stay in front of PG's, and he cannot get around the screens in time to defend the PnR that opposing teams have been consistently picking on Felton/Kidd/Pablo

What he makes is irrelevent, here are some PG's that make less or around the same money as Felton that does a much better job than him in EVERY ASPECT OF THE GAME
If you look closely these are ALL BACKUPS to their teams G's, so many team's backups are better than Felton = FACT

Nate Robinson

Jarreat Jack - probably a combo guard that would have helped us the most on BOTH ends on the floor, good balanced game, and was attainable considering we did use 4 2nd round picks last summer and what he was aquired for and had Gadzuric's non garanteed contract to work with

Ridnour

Sessions

Bayless

These GARBAGE posters think they know but only know how to BASH not analyze the game....

"Felton played like a elite PG, much better than Lin" ?
"Knick's are looking at #1st place vs 1st round exits in Denver/Houston"

Oh, yeah, we are built to WIN NOW, and they are built to win LATER/COMPETE NOW, and they are still better than us yesterday and today, waiting to see for tomorrow...

I am watching Houston vs Minny right now and Lin is so much a better and SMARTER player than Felton

In my opinion. The Knicks made a terrible mistake.....again.

I just put it on, you have a friend in me tonight

It's not just your opinion that the Knicks made a mistake in letting Lin walk, it's a pretty unanimous view outside of a small group of deluded Knicks 'fans';

I can't even call them fans, if anything they're Knicks haters because they do a disservice to the franchise by talking up this cluster fawk

Can't believe Barrea made that shot, he's a dribble-happy little guy

Wow I'm sorry gang, I could've swore this was the Other Games Thread, my bad, fam

I like the way Lin fights over screens. His D in general is tough and his court vision!!! What a pass!

I want to cry every time I see him play,

THIS GUY WAS OURS, smfh

remember Linsanity??

Linsanity, for me, was almost as special as Croatia's 1998 World Cup run :(

And that's saying something :(

I agree. Once again this year we fans are complaining about the lack of good Pg play.

I have no doubt it was Melo who pushed him out because he sis not want to share the stage. Lin would have new that other scorer and the facilitator they need

It's truly unreal.

Terrible? Maybe. Mistake? for sure. Although I really like that we brought Ray Ray back, I don't think he is better for our team.
