Knicks · Magic Johnson has said... (page 1)

from the last couple of espn studio shows that the knicks "lack an identity." this is just a polite way of saying that the knicks have not really gelled.

why haven't they gelled?

teams that lack an identity or have failed to gel are doomed come playoff time, especially beyond the first round. even so, will the knicks win a first round finally? i guess it depends on whether we draw atlanta or the nets. we have a chance of defeating these squads but i have to say... so what?

He also said this back when they were healthy:
"This is the team that's going to give the Heat the most trouble because they have the perimeter players," Johnson said on the radio show. "They're the best defensive team in basketball right now; they have become the best passing team in basketball and they're playing with great confidence. This Knicks team is playing together.

"That's why they're going to challenge the Heat for the Eastern Conference Finals."

What Identity Crisis?

"You don't get to be old bein no fool"

dk7th wrote:okay then try to address magic johnson's issue: why do they lack an identity?

We is old, we is injured, we are coached by a retread who has never won anything (except more games than any other coach with the same amount of games with the franchise) our beat weiters universally resent the franchise policies and our fans is more impatient than a five year old in the toy aisle of WalMart.

That is our identity.

AnubisADL @ 3/21/2013 7:17 PM
The old Knicks had an identity. LOSERS!

Magic can STFU and worry about his Lakers.

you imply that the lack of health is the reason why they lack an identity. this is not what i see in chicago and boston. they have maintained their identity no matter who has been injured.

Although he has a point you can't put too much stock into what he says. When he attended the Wizards game I believe the first time we played them at Washington he said Carmelo was the league MVP...

lol @ Tragic Johnson.....

Truthfully? They launch a lot of threes and if they go in, they win. If not, they don't. That's their identity. They are perimeter-oriented to a scary, scary degree.

Whats the point in this thread- you're only going to end up claiming that its Melo's fault!

It all really depends on how much you value Magic Johnson's opinion. Magic was saying Melo was the in the race for MVP of the league around the same time you were saying he wasnt.

he is trying to be diplomatic regarding melo and at the same time trying to promote the game and generate excitement. he's not like charles barkley or jon barry that way, or even shaq.

i value his opinion based on his being one of the top greatest players, and i think anyone who has seen him play and who has followed him as a studio analyst, knows that he's diplomatic and a promoter of sorts. looking past his way of stating things i try to get to the substance of what he is saying.

and what he is saying is that the knicks still lack an identity. do you agree with his assessment?

Andrew @ 3/22/2013 12:09 PM
I see a lot of people not wanting to discuss a simple point.

Honestly, IMO, for better or worse, and seeming with the coaches blessing Melo is our identity. I don't know how a team can gel when a single player is so much the teams focus and not a natural facilitator. It's not Melo's fault, just the position the Knicks management has put him in.

Not really. the Knicks are an iso-centric, 3 point shooting team. As NYDiva said, they're perimeter oriented. I remember last season when Lin and Amare went down and we were playing the Magic (the same day that Dwight got called out for trying to get Stan fired) SVG said the knicks are better without them because they had an identity - which was that they go through Melo. We're pretty much the same this season. Its just that when our shots arent falling and we continue to play terrible defense and Melo gets injured, we dont look too good.

Edit: I dont really like that that is our identity but it is what it is.
