So either the Singleton signing fell through, or we're signing two players- no idea which yet.
With a need to bolster their depleted frontline depth, the New York Knicks will sign veteran center Solomon Jones, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Jones' letter of clearance arrived Friday from China, clearing the way for him to join the Knicks for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.
For Liaoning of the Chinese Basketball Association, the 6-10 Jones averaged 15.8 points and 10.4 rebounds this season. He played parts of the 2011-12 season with the New Orleans Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers, and played 58 games with the Atlanta Hawks in his first NBA season in 2006-07.
The Knicks plan to release veteran Kurt Thomas, out for the season with an injury, to make room for Jones, 28, on the roster.
Looks like he's played for Woody before, while he was in Atlanta.
Solomon Jones III (born July 16, 1984 in Eustis, Florida) is an American professional basketball player. He is 6'10" tall and weighs 245 lb, playing as power forward/center. He played collegiate basketball at a community college, Daytona State College, (for two seasons — 2002/03-2003/04), and then at University of South Florida (for two seasons — 2004/05-2005/06). He was then selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 33rd pick (3rd in 2nd round) in the 2006 NBA Draft. As a rookie he played in 58 games for the Atlanta Hawks. He averaged 3.3 points a game and 2.3 rebounds a game in 11.5 minutes. After three seasons for the Atlanta Hawks, he signed a two-year deal with the Indiana Pacers.[1]
On January 3, 2012, he joined the Los Angeles Clippers,[2] but he was waived after playing 10 games.[3] On February 15, 2012, the New Orleans Hornets signed him to a ten-day contract.[4] On February 27, 2012, the New Orleans Hornets signed him to a second ten-day contract.[5] In September 2012, Jones signed with the Phoenix Suns. On October 24, 2012, Jones was waived by the Suns. He later joined the Liaoning Hengye Jaguars of the Chinese Basketball Association.[6]
I don't know anything about him apart from what I've read- what's he like?
Also I wonder if we're still signing Singleton in addition.

Interesting. Either way, Singleton or Jones strictly providing insurance for the end of season and playoffs.
Let this man play out the string while Kmart and Tyson get healthy.
Solace@ 4/12/2013 12:59 PM
I think I like this better than Singleton. Singleton makes no sense to me; it's not even clear he's better than James White.
I'm okay with this signing, as it gives us one more big, as long as it means that KT basically wasn't going to be back in time for the majority of the playoffs, which I think is the case. What are the rules are resigning released players? If KT chooses not to retire next year, I'd love to bring him back again.
Also, seeing how this has unfolded, considering how many injuries the Knicks have had, I'm starting to think the 15 man roster is too small. 17 would be nice. Ah well.
RonRon@ 4/12/2013 1:03 PM
how does 2 inches measure up from being a consistent double double threat in points and rebounds, a pair of block shots or/and steals combined, and the mobility/spacing that Singleton can provide? Instead we have 6 players, almost half our roster, that play better at C and than PF
Chandler Camby
Amare Wallace
Copeland Martin
Singleton might not get many PT in the play offs but he would be an insurance player with all the injuries/health/age questions of these players Solomon Jones is another James White/Gadzuric that does not deserve to play at all But Woody probably has more to do with this signing since he has coached Jones before and trust/control is something Woody must have over his players vs Singleton who has not coached before
By far, Singleton is the much better talent, Woody has to let Grunweld do this job I am sure Martin would have been signed much earlier with the addition of another PG if Woody let Grunweld do his job during early 2013
BRIGGS@ 4/12/2013 1:16 PM
This really was not as attractive of a signing but it is what it is. Please Tyson Amare and Kenyon come back.
TeamBall@ 4/12/2013 1:19 PM
This really came out of nowhere
AnubisADL@ 4/12/2013 1:28 PM
Woodson knows what Solomon Jones brings to the table. Woodson coached Jones before.
Less than 10 games left.

Whatever, just don't get hurt. I am deathly afraid of one main cog getting hurt

That's the only thing I care about these last few games. Play Solomon 30mins a game, play White 30+mins a game, and pray hard to the basketball injury gods. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT PLAY FELTON TONIGHT!

It's simply injury insurance for our bigs. We are fully healthy at SF, SG, PG. Singleton wouldn't play, IMHO.

I bet it has more to do with singleton not signing a contract with a non-guaranteed 2nd yr
NBA Scouting Reports: Filling in the Blanks- the Centers August 20, 2009 Overview: Young center who is trying to solidify himself as a backup. Isn’t terribly tall for a center, but has an enormous wingspan. Shows nice athleticism, but remains skinny for a post player despite adding a lot of weight throughout his college career. The definition of a late bloomer. Didn’t emerge as a serious draft prospect until his senior season. Played two seasons at Daytona Beach Community College before moving on to South Florida. Had some nice games as a senior and provided a nice defensive presence, but really emerged during the draft process. Has improved in each of his seasons in the NBA. Now has some of the skills to match his solid basketball instincts. Brings some things to the table on the defensive end. Will be asked to make an impact off the bench for the Pacers.
Offense: Has seen his role shift considerably as his skill set has developed. Did most of his damage finishing around the rim as a rookie, when he posted a solid shooting percentage before taking almost exclusively jump shots in a limited role in his second season. Came back strong in his third year, showing a vastly improved shooting stroke and regaining many of the touches he didn’t get down low as a sophomore. Has improved his jumper dramatically over time. Now capable of knocking down midrange jumpers with surprising consistency. Has a super high release, allowing him to hit many shots with a hand in his face. Not a bad catch and shoot threat for a player that didn’t develop a jumper until reaching the NBA. Still does most of his damage around the rim. Long and athletic enough to finish down low. Doesn’t show a refined post game, meaning he gets most of his touches by moving without the ball and pulling down offensive rebounds. Shows a face up jumper as well as a turnaround, but lacks the consistent hook shot to be a threat to make a move going at his opponent. Outstanding finisher when he doesn’t have to put the ball up moving away from the rim. Length and quick leaping ability are great tools for him, as he often beats his man into the air and is the first player above the rim. Gets to the line at a solid rate and shoots a decent percentage. Not a glamorous scorer by any stretch of the imagination, but his finishing and midrange shooting make him very efficient with what touches he does use.
Defense: Foul prone shot blocker who is big on tools and small on fundamentals. Has more than enough lateral quickness, length, and leaping ability to make an impact on the defensive end. Very good weakside shot blocker who is good at anticipating shots and helping his teammates moving from block. Lack of bulk hurts him against some players. Tends to have issues with fouling due to his aggressive shot blocking mentality and struggles with holding position. Will diligently protect the rim, making him an attractive player in limited minutes. Needs to cut back on his fouling to get more playing time.

It is what it is. Seems like a good enough signing with what is available.

Like I said on the Singleton thread, we just need a living human being to play these last few games and get our other players some rest. At this point, there are no game changing big men out there.
MSG3@ 4/12/2013 2:57 PM
Hopefully this signing won't matter. We just need a healthy body to round out the roster. If KMart and Tyson are healthy this guy won't be getting a lot of minutes unless it;s an emergency. It seems like KMart and Tyson are going to be fine (knock on wood) so the real question is what, if anything, can we count on from Camby, Sheed and/or Amar'e?
RonRon@ 4/12/2013 3:25 PM
forget the size, I would much rather have a twig in Warrick than a 3rd string at best with no upside Just about any big in D League would be more attractive than this scrub... Singleton and Warrick are 9th/10th man options vs a 15+ man and a waste of a roster spot
I guess we are looking at James White, Solomon Jones, 3m in cash that we can use in the summer, and the trade exemption for Ronnie Brewer/along with the 2nd round pick from OKC for a player
hopefully it is enough to take a shot at someone like
Brandon Rush
who is recovering from surgery and in a contract year of 4m/expiring to clear some salary from GS so they can resign Jack without going over the tax bracket

nonsense move
If I were NY i'd see what ex net, ex knick Shelden Williams is doing, last seen on france team 2012 according to websites
though Williams just 6 9 1/2 PF but played more Center , defends blocks & did well in limited min. & few starts when Amare went down few yrs back.
Shelden also a physical guy/playa & knocks opposing foes to their ass on fouls at times, only 29 yrs old .
Ny need D & physical presence guys, bigman. Shelden is experienced dont know what Brum Grundwald sees in Jones other than ex woodson player whom can shoot but gets pushed around in paint. Who needs that eh ?
Jones is Center as 0' as a move as Singleton move which did not happen?

I don't understand what you're worried about with this move. It's just another big to allow us to play without having Melo have to play C. It's not really important how good he is as an overall player. He just needs to be an athletic big that can absorb some minutes for us.
We don't know that SIngleton won't still be added. At this point i'm trusting Gruny on this. We've only got a few more games to go so his or any players impact will be minimal.
