Same old JR Smith. JR Smith could always defend and shoot. The problem for him is like Jamal Crawford is CONSISTENCY. JR Smith is the ideal 6th man. He can come in an jack all the shots he likes.
If we had a healthy Amare JR Smith wouldn't be able to get jack as many shots as he does now. Nice being the 2nd best offensive weapon on a team.
Contract year, so I'm still fearful for the worse. That said, I'm still holding out hope for him.
Obviously hoping that this is a new JR but I need to see him sustain this over the course of a season rather than a few weeks. There have definitely been flashes of him reverting to old, terrible-shot-taking JR in the last few games.
I'm hoping that the JR of late will be the one that continues on, whether he's a Knick next season or not. Remember, last season was a contract season for him too. After a half season of seeing how easily he gets to the rim, why should he stop?
I think he has grown as a player and a person
Will he sustain this level of play throughout the rest of his career, I don't think so
but
I think he has grown under Woody and is no longer the 6th man type role with just mainly scoring in streaks like a Jamal Crawford
He is starting material that can give a little bit of everything, with improved DEF/REBOUNDING/PENETRATION/ABILITY TO SET UP TEAM
Has the ability to be a teams 1st through 3rd option, depending on the team, as he is our #2 behind Anthony
It is obvious this is a new and improved JR. Every year with us has been a contract year for JR. This is the very nature of the contracts he has signed with the Knicks. JR, this season has been head and shoulders better than any JR ever before this year.
Papabear Says
If JR Smith considers coming back to the Knicks he will have one big demand. He ain't coming off the bench. He wants to be a starter and if Woody can't gaurantee that JR Is gone. He will refuse to be a 6th man. The other thing will be JR's Brother. If we sign JR's brother I thinK JR will stay.
heh, well you know where i am on this!
look, this guy has the innate talent to be one of the greats, but almost a decade into his career, he has proved only one thing: that he is happy being the 6th guy, in the secondary role, and i don't think he has aspirations beyond this,
of course anything can happen, but this is an old dog without new tricks, there is a reason he's playing for 2 million and change this year, already something like 28 years old.
he showed up early, took it easy a little, then showing up now at the end to leave us with a good taste in our brains,
classic pattern, seen it before.

There is an easy plan for that imho, Amar'e coming off the bench. They already do not believe he can play starter's minutes so why not come off the bench.

The NEW J.R. or CONTRACT JR?It just doesn't matter. Without Earl Smith we are not 52-27.
We goin' to Disneyworld!

Jeremy Lin got 8.25mm a year avg for 46 games Novak got 4mm avg. If we got by comps JR is worth 10mm +

Yeah I see JR starting next year and his brother being on the roster too.
They do not need JR to come off the bench to make use of his scoring. All Woodson needs to do is makle sure that either he or Melo is on the floor at one time, which shouldn't be hard considering they both play 30+ minutes.
Definition, Misuse and The Stereotyping Of An Athlete
Innate: existing in, belonging to, or determined by factors present in an individual from birth

Of course Smith does not have any aspirations, he was also born lazy.

I think it is quite irresponsible to call/infer that someone is a bigot based on these comments.
What is that all about?
Saying that "this guy has innate talent" means that he said that all black men are born to jump and play basketball? C'mon!
CP3 is a "smart" player. JR is not. They are both black. They both have talent. CP3 did the best with it, JR has not (yet).
IsraelKnick - by definition, the use of the word
innate clearly implies that JR Smith never needed to work on his craft to get to the National Basketball Association. You agree with that?
The CP3 comparison is irrelevant.
The idea of Smith not fulfilling his untapped star potential because he is lazy, or too dumb, is one of the oldest stereotypes in the book.

He went into training camp lobbying for a starting position and Woodson wanted him to be the 6th man. You want him to complain to the media about not starting?
Thank You

Anyone who follows the Knicks knows the reporting of Smith's frustration with being relegated to the sixth man role at the start of the season. Coach Woodson had to manage that frustration and motivate a volatile player.
Someone who picks around the facts would ignore this.

I absolutely do not agree that the use of the word "innate" implies that JR never needed to work on his craft. Just because one has "innate" talent does not mean that it does not have to be honed.
Why is calling someone lazy a stereotype? Is it possible that one may perhaps be lazy?
I don't think anyone can argue that JR has not played to the level that he is capable of. Why? Who knows. He takes too many bad/forced shots, does not pass enough, does not get to the foul line enough/does not drive enough. I am talking about his career, not this great stretch that he is having that I hope continues. Does this have anything to do with the contract? I don't know but if I were a GM, I would certainly entertain this as a possibility and be weary. Wouldn't you?
JR is the key to our playoff success IMHO. If he plays the right way, we can be successful. If he plays the way he played in last years playoffs, we are screwed.
Offense aside, I think that JR played well defensively this year and has rebounded really well.
Contract Novak
IsraelKnick - in the case of playing basketball, there is no such thing as innate talent. If that were the case, why aren't we talking about the innate ability of Steve Novak to shoot a three pointer?
If you want to extend the discussion to the concept of being lazy, perhaps the idea that Novak continually cannot adjust his defensive positioning to either stay in front of his man ... or understand the angles enough to rebound the basketball, at 6'10, at a better rate than Pablo Prigioni would suggest some lack of fundamental comprehension. Can anyone argue that Novak has not played up to the level he is capable of?
Does any of this relate to Novak's contract, and the fact he knows he no longer needs to work for his paycheck?
Or is his one-dimensional performance that a result of his low basketball IQ?
If Steve Novak plays the way he played in last years playoffs, we are screwed.

Again, you are asserting race into this.
Novak does not lack effort. He is just not that good. And, if the 3 is not going down, he does not do much else. There is a big difference with missing shots and not playing smart. Steve Sax not being able to throw the ball to first had nothing to do with a lack of effort.
I don't even think that JR does not give effort or has a low basketball IQ. He may just be selfish and does not like getting hit. Is that racism? Does that mean that Novak is selfish too?
And ... as we have seen, we can do quite well with Novak playing like crap. Not so much with JR. He is much more important to this team.
