Knicks · JR Officially 6th Man of the Year (page 7)

How can anyone hate someone that has "Get chicks or die tryin" as their high school yearbook quote?
misterearl@ 4/24/2013 2:44 PM
That was no heave, that was a 40 foot jump shot with perfect form

JR is the man right now. I loved that buzzer beater last night

Kobe In The Mirror
“He’s so athletic, he could go to the basket anytime he wanted it. But he got fouled and referees never called it. He was getting beat up and getting tired of it. I’m not bashing referees. But they get caught up watching and not reffing. I always thought that about him and Melo, too. There’s some guys you can’t even touch. Not them..."
“He bought into the system and realized what he had to do to make this team successful. The older guys bended his ear. When coaches, the owner, GM, Allan Houston is on your side and everybody’s pulling for you, it makes a big difference.’’
- Earl Smith Sr
Let's not pretend that success on the court means maturity in a human sense any more than failure necessarily indicates a lack of growth. Sometimes the two things are connected. Sometimes, they're not. Somewhere along the way, Smith and Woodson were able to reach some kind of an understanding, and that's to be applauded.
And Smith is to be applauded as well for turning around a career that was on the fast track to nowhere to the Sixth Man of the Year. And to think, it never would have happened had he been allowed to be a starer.

Guess ya'll can stop making ASSUMPTIONS now
“I got to give all the credit to Knicks organization and Coach Woodson,’’ Earl Smith told The Post yesterday. “When you got a coach like that, anything’s possible.
“I noticed it from the first game,’’ Earl Smith added. “When you have all the potential in the world, there’s a certain way you have to approach him. There’s just different ways to approach different people. Woodson had the patience. The other coaches didn’t have the patience.
Earl said his son has already taken less to be a Knick, claiming the Lakers had a superior offer last summer.
“It depends on what’s on the table,’’ Earl said. “He’s already taken a lot less the last two years to play here. Whatever the decision, I support. I would love for him to be here but I have my other two sons here.’’
“He bought into the system and realized what he had to do to make this team successful,’’ Earl added. “The older guys bended his ear. When coaches, the owner, GM, Allan Houston is on your side and everybody’s pulling for you, it makes a big difference.’’

I wasn't a fan of his at all for a long time but I am allowed to change my mind. He deserves his props. The man needed to flat out grow up. It seems like he is doing that.
He's not a perfect player but he helps us win big regardless.

So the FA rules have changed? Looks like we can only give him up to the MLE. We can sign a multi-year deal with him... Is it the case that if he signs a 1 year deal after the season, we then get full bird rights with him?

We can sign him to another 2 year deal(last year a Player option), he can opt out of the 2nd year next year, and we'd have his full bird rights and pay him Scrooge McDuck money if he wants.
Allanfan20@ 4/25/2013 11:18 AM
Is he going to accept another 1 year deal? The guy wants a contract.
misterearl@ 4/25/2013 11:20 AM
Priceless
"Get chicks or die tryin"
jrodmc@ 4/25/2013 11:53 AM
Let's just go with what we have.
1) He absolutely, positively took less money to be here. Even Papa Smith knows that much. Even dear Jeremy knows that. Hey wasn't that Landry Fields I just passed on the way to the basket? 2) The man's body is a canvas, he likes to be on display. It's a generally accepted fact that a certain amount of ego gets you to this level. MSG is a pretty big display case. 3) Woody. 4) Holding trophies at center court can be quite habit forming. That didn't happen in NOH and it didn't happen in John Denver. 5) Don't underestimate a young man who embraces a bench role, and plays more minutes than anyone else. 6) Don't underestimate the young man's memory of the starters and teammates (some with chips, no less) having spastic orgasms over his exploits. 7) JKidd finding a home and sobriety to ride into his golden years? 8) Who the eff gave a crap about JR before these past two seasons? 9) How many red light moments does one need to finally say to one's agent; F U and your retainer, I'm home. 10) He's already been to small marketville.
callmened@ 4/25/2013 12:57 PM
my friend thought of giving JR a "Linsanity" type of deal...cheap on the front end and then just back end the contract
next yr = 5 mil (bird rights rules) following year 5 mil (bird rights rules) 3rd yr = 8 mil 4th yr = 10 mil so basically a 28mil/4yr contract
what do you think?
misterearl@ 4/25/2013 1:02 PM
Iron Man (see 15)
11) the ovation when JR reports to the scorers table rivals that of Latrell Sprewell. How much does Earl Jr need to feed his family?
12) who knew a fadeaway jumper could be considered a textbook shot? Dick Barnett that's who! Fall... Back... Baby!
(You could look it up)
13) next time you go to the court, please attempt shot from 40 feet, using your standard jump shot technique. No baseball throws allowed. Please Note your observations.
14)homeboy never gets injured. If he is bruised, he never shows it. Having logged the most minutes on his time card, when was the last time JR was described as a "blue collar" worker?
Never
jrodmc@ 4/25/2013 2:19 PM
11a) Drives bicycles and mopeds, not high-end sports cars and overly-mortgaged yachts.
+1 Kudos to the AnswerMan for working in the Spree reference.
15) Appreciates the blood and guts of KT warrior types.

Ah well. Bye bye JR. Based on his dad's comment JR Smith is cashing in this summer.
If Im Grunwald I'd have Mayo's number on speed dial. Tell him he will be "featured" like Smith was.
technomaster@ 4/25/2013 2:23 PM
I think the 6th man of the year award conference was a beautiful thing. The fascinating quote was his acknowledgement that it took 10 years to figure things out. Fortunately for him, he started out very young in the NBA, and based on his years of service, doesn't have a tremendous amount of physical miles based on his somewhat limited playing time over the years.
It's indisputable that he has the physical tools & talent to be among the best SGs in the NBA. With his mental game finally gaining consistency, off the top of my head, I can think of 3 who are better at this point:
Kobe Harden Wade
Why the recent change? Perhaps it's a bit of his relationship with Woodson, the influence of his veteran teammates, and perhaps the close proximity of his parents.

Assuming the Knicks would promise to "take care" of him next year when they could overpay. I hope Grunwald doesn't do that. JR Smith has been a beast but the guy just cant be trusted in late game situations.

He's a funny guy

AnubisAdL - Please explain why Earl is always on the court in late game situations.
Mike Woodson is an idiot?

Dude I love JR Smith and always wanted the Knicks to get him. However, I feel he is a ideal 6th man.
Lets not get things twisted since he won the award. Woodson basically lets JR Smith do whatever he wants on the offensive end. JR Smith doesnt excel at scoring in the flow of the offense. He excels at getting his own shot.
misterearl@ 4/25/2013 4:11 PM
AnubisADL - you are so myopically stuck in the past that The Answer Man would question what games you are watching, if any.
You also conveniently overlook Smiths defense (which is a team effort) and his rebounding. Why is that?
