Knicks · JR Officially 6th Man of the Year (page 8)

AnubisADL - you are so myopically stuck in the past that The Answer Man would question what games you are watching, if any.

You also conveniently overlook Smiths defense (which is a team effort) and his rebounding. Why is that?

Assuming the Knicks would promise to "take care" of him next year when they could overpay. I hope Grunwald doesn't do that. JR Smith has been a beast but the guy just cant be trusted in late game situations.

AnubisAdL - Please explain why Earl is always on the court in late game situations.

Mike Woodson is an idiot?

Dude I love JR Smith and always wanted the Knicks to get him. However, I feel he is a ideal 6th man.

Lets not get things twisted since he won the award. Woodson basically lets JR Smith do whatever he wants on the offensive end. JR Smith doesnt excel at scoring in the flow of the offense. He excels at getting his own shot.

another way to put it is he has excelled at doing exactly what it is Mike Woodson has asked him to do

I think he has and it wouldn't be hard for him to play even more in the flow of the offense. with a good off season. If the coaches define a role and a plan for him he could easily follow it to be a starter. JR has played so many different roles is his career though , he has played the Korver role, the back up point, and the anything you want sixth man. To become a high quality/all-star stater would really be about him getting his off ball shooting back to where it was in Denver and attack the basket like he was late in the year.

I think more than anything defensively is where he would need to improve. He would need to improve his lower body strength to play the 3 for starters and become a better technical defender.

Yellow - if JR Smith improved his lower body strength any more he would be jumping over the backboard. Think about what you wrote. By any physical measure, Smith is an identical match for Kobe Bryant. Are you suggesting Kobe needs to improve his (cough) lower body strength?

What is your measure? JR has played more minutes than anyone on the roster and you think he is not strong enough? Lower body strength? Dude, he is not an offensive tackle.

C'mon Son.

Earl Smith Jr is by no means perfect, but your purely arbitrary criteria borders on comedy. He is learning to get in where he fits in. 2013 NBA Sixth man Of the year does not suck that bad. Did you catch how proud he was of that recognition? That is a huge step forward for a former problem man child.

Besides, he is a swing man, not a typical anything. He is a work in progress.

Let us hope the tough love Mike Woodson has shown him will lead to another productive night as a leader.

DO you know Kobe workout standards? DO you know JR's? DO you think Jr puts in as much work on his body as Kobe does and did? You think Kobe hired Tim Grover to work on his shot? Now he worked on strengthen his body and many other things. When it comes to JR starting for the Knicks he would need too strengthen his lower body and core to defend the three. Right now he battles but can get muscled by some 3s. Even if he was at the top of his game, which he is not, he has things he can improve. Also, this is not about his endurance but combining that with improved physical attributes. That added strength might not only help him defensively but maintain his height on his jumper late.

As a work in progress as you stated he must continue to improve his body, game, mind , and soul.

Maybe you expect JR to stay a good player but I won't him to achieve greatness. HE has it in him.

misterearl @ 4/25/2013 6:45 PM
Yellowboy - Whatever workout program Kobe is on it ain't working. He is injured and out.

You take one year out of several. Also, in this year how many injury's did he play through. Some of that is individual pain tolerance( I think JR has a high tolerance too) and some of that is his workouts.

callmened @ 4/25/2013 7:03 PM
Lets not turn this into a Kobe freak accident thing and comparing it to JR

im just trying to think of ways, JR can return

One thing you can rest sure of. JR Ain't coming back to New York as the 6th man. If he dosen't start he will not come back to the Knicks.

Next year will be next year. Since we're all basing the future on our own opinions, I think JR's accomplished enough here to know this can be both his payday AND great for his professional career. The man's been to little towns; that has got to be old by now.

Would you think he's going to Boston or LA? Or for the love of sheehit, Miami? Or could he actually be looking at those stupid black and white unis across the way? You play on Broadway and someone's going to talk you into Flatbush Avenue?

Motivated Self-Interest. This is the best place for him to be. On multiple levels. For lots of reasons.
Sooner or later, even with young money millionaires, it's about outcomes. They've been pretty above the bar for the young man thus far.

Everyone start praying now for some small twinkle of brilliance to emerge in our stooge blues owner.

Atlanta will probably make a run at JR Smith and they are no small town.
callmened @ 4/26/2013 10:56 AM
atlanta as lou williams already though

Lou Williams was signed as a scorer off the bench. JR Smith would be a starter.

that would be scary! is atlanta under the cap?

Atlanta's entire team is basically expiring. JR Smith is a nice replacement for the high flying Josh Smith.

after getting a taste of playing in a REAL CITY, why would he even consider the Hawks. JR will not sign with a small market team, the few endorsements he has gained as a Knick will likely dry up. Nike will probably want him to stick to the metro area and I can't see him signing with the Clipper....I mean the Nets. Smith and MSG will work out a way to keep him in the Blue and Orange Armor for years to come.

You know Woody will want him back and the Genius Grunny will find a way to make it happen. I have MADD faith in Grunfeld.

+1 except that you seem to be flashbacking to Ernie, it's Grunwald...

And this aint a Linsanity flash in the pan. JR's got some hardware, and is good to go come playoff time.

Please Jimmy, pay the young man! Do it now!

Given JR's off the court hobby I would say Atlanta would be the number one destination for him if he does not come back LOL
