Why is this the pic they show of Collins for this article?
Good for him. I hope he finds peace and happiness and can move on. The anti gay crowd blows stuff like this way out of proportion.
it'll be interesting to see if a team signs him this offseason since he's now a FA.
I didn't realize he was the first active American pro athlete to come out. I assumed it would have happened by now.

If he was 27 and avg 15 he get signed. Whether he is gay or not--hes been terrible for many years now. I think he was firing this as a last shot. Remember he was the Nets starting C when they were going to the finals--he was somewhat lucky by chance at that time--but it parlayed into a long career. He has that twin brother--but no word on him.

Right now he is a free agent with little hope to sign regardless of anything else--I dont know if this counts.

yeah, seems a bit creative in their narrowing of definition. Perhaps they mean Men's only too, right? I guess "major team" could mean men only.

I assume it means NFL, NHL, MLB, and NBA

If he doesn't sign anywhere, he'll probably get many offers for paid speaking engagements

They're basically referring to the 4 major professional leagues in the USA; NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB. There are a lot of athletes who've come out in women's leagues, the college level, and other men's sports but never those four. I guess you could probably add NASCAR to those 4 as well.
Oh, and good luck to Jason Collins. Go take a look at the comments on the various articles about this and you can see why this is still a big deal.
Didnt the guy on the Atros come out. Brad ismus or brandon inge or something

yeah you're probably right briggs.. he's been pretty shitty his whole career, but at one time was a serviceable player. i would imagine he wouldn't have been signed anyway at this point.
He might be at the end of his career and thought he'd at leaast put it out there. Kind of has nothing to lose at this point.
IM sure there were rumors.
Good for him! I hope he can continue his career!

I think this is one of the more serious threads we have come across, if you dont have much to add, please refrain. Thanks.
good call. i kinda felt like that wasnt a good idea. sorry if i offended you or anyone else

Yeah, Callmened probably didn't mean to be offensive but making fun of a guy for his sexual orientation is just as inappropriate as making fun of him for his race, nationality, etc.
i think this is bad for pro sports, not because he's a gay but because sexuality should not have anything to do with pro sports whether you are a hetero or a homosexual
- good call. i kinda felt like that wasnt a good idea. sorry if i offended you or anyone else
- comments like that (no matter how mild/minor) are part of the problem. i admit that and i SINCERELY apologize.

Your correct and in time it will happen. Back in the day being black was a big deal for many trailblazers who integrated leagues and college conferences. They had to put up with a lot of crap.
Then race was no longer an issue.
If Collins plays he will be called out on it. He is willing to be the first. THere are some real fanatic right wing who will despise him. For some its a religious thing.
Its complicated. To stop discrimination one has to consider them a "race" to equate. That makes it complicated. Its not a "race of people". For detracters they think its a "lifestyle choice".
Bottom line its discriminatin if you dont' treat everyone the same legally.
Sports is very macho. I wonder who will be the first to have a openly game player on an ACTIVE roster?
