Knicks · Masai Ujiri, Executive of the Year 2013 What the Frock??? (page 1)

ChuckBuck @ 5/9/2013 9:40 AM
Someone from Denver is lining those voters pockets lately.

First Karl(undeservedly) now Ujiri(undeservedly).

http://www.denverpost.com/nuggets/ci_232...

Where's the Grunwald love? All Ujiri did was trade for Iguodala and draft Fournier.

Glenn Grunwald did the following this season:

-Extend Mike Woodson
-Made the tough decision to pass on Jeremy Lin, and sign Ray Felton
-Sign Jason Kidd, veteran of veterans
-Re-sign JR Smith, 6th Man of the Year
-Sign Pablo Prigioni, starting point guard
-Re-sign Steve Novak, floor spacer
-Sign K-Mart, integral paint defender
-Sign Rasheed Wallace, 3 to the dome originated here
-Sign bench gem, Chris Copeland
-Sign Ronnie Brewer, low cost Shumpert insurance for a couple months
-Sign Kurt Thomas, who probably saved the season
-Hired Dave Hopla, shooting coach that helped the team smash 3 pt records

I'm sure there's more but there really is no comparison.

TeamBall @ 5/9/2013 9:42 AM
Wow Grunwald got robbed (maybe even Morey as well). The only thing I can think of is that maybe COY and Exec of the year go hand and hand? Idk..even then it still seems stupid.

You think the knicks are the only team don't you?

Denver won 57 games. In some circles (the majority of the world) consider the 82 game season a large sample in which awards are given. Denver won 57 games without a closer, a star, and he rebuilt the franchise off the trade of Melo.

That just fries your azz don't it?

Really no comparison? Well if you looked at other things then thru the orange and blue tinted glasses you'll see why.

Is it subjective? Of course. Was Grunny a viable candidate and in the discussion? I would think so. Same for Pop, OKC guy (top west seed after harden trade!) and Riles whose team had the best record!

I get it, your a fan and an "Ultimate" one.

Im not here to say your wrong about Grunny, but 57 wins with that roster is an accomplishment! I think not every accomplishment need have a deep playoff run to validate it, but I get why some people would think so.

Heh, based on our recent history, you kinda do care!

If we were perennial contenders like the Spurs, it'd be a shrug.

The Knicks have been dreadful, and are finally turning the corner the last couple of years.

It's a source of pride. Shows the team is going in the right direction.

I care.

If regular season don't matter, then 2 seed and first place don't either for you?

The Brooklyn Team is thataway!

Just messing with you.

Tell me whatever moves Ujiri did besides Iguodala and Fournier and I'll stand up and give him props.

Hint, you can't say Faried, Brewer, or Miller, they were on the team last season.

Wow, 57 wins, 3rd seed. Owner of the Year should be next. Franchise of the Century! Best Uni in the Solar System!

And all Grunny accomplished was 54 wins, 2nd seed and Division Champ.

Those three games must really cut some mustard.

My guess was Billy King was in the discussion also!!!! They sucked last year and won 49 games! More than Golden State!!

To answer your question:

They play 82 games, they won 57.

Do I think they should wait until the playoffs are done and then votes on COY or Exec of the year? Yeah, but they don't. So given those parameters I can see why they gave it.

57 wins, and all that goes into getting to that.

What they don't do is list the parameters by which they vote on do they? If not, its subjective. Therefore I can't totally respond why he gets it and Grunny don't other than 57 wins without a star player.

If wins are it, then Riles should get it.

I don't get your point. "With that roster"? "That roster" is the body of work on which the Exec of the Year award is given.
Your point seems to be more valid for the coach, who has done good work with "that roster" and for which Karl did already get an award. If you don't think the roster is terrific, why is the Exec earning honors?

+1, besides the Iguodala trade, which was merely an ancillary piece in the 4 team Dwight Howard trade, how can an Executive win "Executive of the Year" sitting on his hands?

I listed the bevvy of moves Glenn Grunwald made to backup his case.

Nalod still hasn't really made a case for this dude. DEFLECTION!

Seriously if I were a voter, I'd give it to RC Buford ever year. Dude's incredible!

Defelection? Im talking Denver.

That roster? I'll explain my view.

I think some are looking at how an exec wins and the deals they made to get their. Sometimes the deals from previous years add up.
Again, its subjective, right?

So "That Roster" on paper did not look like a 57 win team but it did, so getting the players in place to win 57 is important.

They got Mcgee and pay him 11mil a year for 20 min off the bench. ON paper, its a silly thing. In reality, it was a component that helped win 57 games.

The guy traded melo and in the first full season since the trade he looks good for doing it!

Not that Melo looks bad or Grunny looks bad. Thats why I keep saying both teams won the trade!!!

I don't think it's a cumulative 2 or 3 year award. Pretty sure it's annual.

http://www.nba.com/history/awards/execut...

BRIGGS @ 5/9/2013 10:55 AM
I wouldve said Morey. Getting harden ended up being the trade of the year. Our guy had to be top 5 he had makes and misses but the move to let Lin walk for Felton was also a move of the year type. I think the up and down of our back ups and injury probably knocked him down a bit but overall Felton is a key cog Martin was a vital safe player and we got Copeland for nothing. I think from now on however when he signs a Lin or a Copeland--do what Morey does--give them 2-3 years contracts with team options in yr 2 and 3. We couldve kept Lin for 500k this year if he did that.

Look at what Morey did with Chandler Parsons--Parsons would command 10mm per on the open market he stuck to 2 years 2mm.

It's obviously annual, Nalod may be suggesting to all that sometimes the roster jells and evolves over more than a 1 year time-frame and perhaps that is taken into account by some.

You're kidding me right? Let's go through these points 1 by 1.

Glenn Grunwald did the following this season:

-Extend Mike Woodson

You don't get credit for resigning people already on the team, that's ridiculous.

-Made the tough decision to pass on Jeremy Lin, and sign Ray Felton

I am so, so, so tired of explaining this. Resigning Lin would not have stopped us from doing anything else we did this offseason, nothing. The only thing resigning Lin would have cost is Dolan's money and a roster spot, so like, James White wouldn't be on the team.

-Sign Jason Kidd, veteran of veterans

Kidd's basically been a negative presence on the court since January.

-Re-sign JR Smith, 6th Man of the Year

You don't get credit for resigning your own players.

-Sign Pablo Prigioni, starting point guard

OK

-Re-sign Steve Novak, floor spacer

You don't get credit for resigning your own players. Also, is anyone here happy about paying Novak $4M/year to do basically nothing?

-Sign K-Mart, integral paint defender

He resisted signing Martin for as long as possible and only did it after we were pretty much desperate.

-Sign Rasheed Wallace, 3 to the dome originated here

You're kidding me.

-Sign bench gem, Chris Copeland

Bench gem? He barely played this season.

-Sign Ronnie Brewer, low cost Shumpert insurance for a couple months

A good signing that didn't work out. Brewer was brutal for us and had maybe 5 good games before he was permanently nailed to the end of the bench.

-Sign Kurt Thomas, who probably saved the season

Thomas wasn't signed, he was a throwin to make salaries match in the Felton deal.

-Hired Dave Hopla, shooting coach that helped the team smash 3 pt records

Really? A shooting coach? You're acting pretty desperate.

I'm sure there's more but there really is no comparison.

The only players we brought in that made a real, positive, tangible, difference for us were Felton, Prigioni, and Martin and Martin only got brought in after we were completely desperate. I don't agree with Ujiri winning it, it should have gone to Morey. Morey signed to RFA, Asik and Lin, whose original teams should have matched and traded for Harden for pennies on the dollar while maintaining enough cap space to go after a max free agent this coming Summer.
