Knicks · we need new scouts...call the spurs (page 1)

NYY1NYK2 @ 6/7/2013 11:08 AM
I was curious as to how a team that always makes the playoffs has such talent..
The SAN ANTONIO SPURS HAVE DRAFTED THE FOLLOWING, in no particular order

All of these guys were late first round and second round picks.....None of these players are stars, but they have all been VERY solid players, who contribute

Luis Scola
Manu ginobili
George Hill
Tiago Splitter
John Salmons
Leandro Barbosa
beno udrih
Ian mahinmi
Dejuan Blair

Add Parker and Leonard to the list too!

You need patience and picks to draft and develop. We prefer to go a different route.

Those players needed some time to develop. Have the balls shed Stephan Jax, have the balls to bring him back, and the ball to let shed him again.

Look at how Spurs built around Timmay vs how we built around ewing. Its not the scouts if you don't keep the picks. Its not the scouts if they don't have time to develop.

fishmike @ 6/7/2013 11:38 AM
David Lee has blossomed. Nate has a nice role and had monster playoff games. Gallo was leading scorer on a very good Nuggs team before tearing the ALC. Chandler hasnt been healthy but I still see a good NBA rotation player. Landry Fields was a starter. Shump looks great.

Knicks have drafted pretty well. Its building the roster and the other moves that have been poor

NYY1NYK2 @ 6/7/2013 11:41 AM
@ nalod, leonard was a pacers pick

And what i mean is, the spurs always seem to strike gold with these late picks

Leonard was technically a pacers pick but if you think that the Spurs didn't actually make the call on this kid then you are mistaken.

what about Duncan and Robinson? I know they're #1s but other franchises would have drafted Greg Oden or Michael Olowkandi

Don't forget Mosgov. Also Cope and Priggs too- not drafted, but still scouted.

Scouting isn't our problem, in fact we've done pretty well. Our problem has always been giving up too much with trades (giving away picks left, right and center).

We have put the draft as a means to trade nothing else--we have one player drafted on this roster in the last 10 years of nBA drafts--the least of any team in the NBA. We had a good season but we do not know if our model is sustainable. For all of the money spent draft picks we have had one good season is 12 years is not good.

How about Trevor Ariza?

knickscity @ 6/7/2013 1:58 PM
Drafting and scouting has been the Knicks strength in recent years.

I guess compared to the Spurs it doesn't match up, but it certainly has been good here.

nixluva @ 6/7/2013 1:58 PM
Maybe now that this franchise is practically FORCED to have to use the draft, maybe we'll get lucky from now on. The New CBA is a Bitch. Can't really do anything the way they used to. Now it's literally THE BEST route to adding to this roster and I can't say that i'm disappointed about that. Can't take another year of AARP. They took a chance. It didn't work. No more messin around. You'd think everyone would be trying to emulate the Spurs given their track record.

Yes, and it was the assets that we used to get melo!

If thats the goal, then we succeeded.

Success defined? For some its loving on a star and enjoy a winning season.

For others, true contendership in the persuit of a championship. That might be final four or making the finals and contending in each series!

Its like the 99' run we had in a strike short season. We came together and made a great run with a bit of luck. We got killed in the finals 4-1 and were never really in that series. I was fun and I was not torn apart we lost as it was just not that kind of team. Not like 93',94', or 2001 (Heat-Knicks brawl). Those loses hurt.

StarksEwing1 @ 6/7/2013 2:39 PM
It must be so easy to be a Spurs fan. Not flashy but the team is always good every year for the past 14-15years. They dont win every year but they have won multiple titles and are always close to the nba finals

Hate the throw the name out there, but when you're talking Nate, Lee, Chandler, Ariza, those successful late 1st rounders we've brought in, you reluctantly have to give some kudos to Isiah. Really the only picks he botched (aside from the many traded away), were Frye, who is certainly serviceable, and Balkman.

not really... he traded Ariza for Stevie Franchise so he doesn't deserve to be on the list. You also have to consider how disappointing Frye (Bynum was available), Balkman, and Mardy Collins were. I don't think a team built around Nate, Lee, and Chandler deserves any reocgnition whatsoever, especially when he traded piacks to get Curry, Crawford, etc. etc.

NYY1NYK2 @ 6/7/2013 3:41 PM
Isaiah took 2 steps forward, and did a 20 yard dash backwards.
He traded away the next 17 first rounders for curry
gave that god awful contract to jerome james, and then outdid that bad contract with Jared jeffries
mardy collins was pure garbage. Frye over bynum...
my stomach turns when i hear his name
NYY1NYK2 @ 6/7/2013 3:43 PM
Who did we trade NENE for again? By the way we took NENE right before AMARE. AMARE was an absolute monster his first couple of yrs

Channing Frye was selected ahead of Danny Granger and Nate Robinson was selected ahead of Monta Ellis and Marcin Gortat; meanwhile Wilson Chandler was selected ahead of Marc Gasol. Even the things that Isiah did "right" were tainted IMO and that's coming from someone that doesn't think he is as bad as most make him out to be.

...and Steve Francis was a part of the centerpiece that got us a future two-time allstar big man, Zach Randolph, so you got to give Isiah credit for turning a mid-2nd round pick into that. Like you though, I don't think Isiah was as good at the draft as most gave him credit for. The Balkman draft was particularly painful because Rajon Rondo was still on the board; and Collins because of Paul Millsap and Kyle Lowry.

Trying to keep the draft separate from the nightmare that was the rest of Isiah's tenure (so the fact that he traded Ariza for nothing is ignored), and talk only about the scouting and talent recognition. I did note Frye was a botched pick, and forgot Mardy (how the hell could I forget Mardy?!), but considering the earliest pick of the lot above was #21 (Nate), [to go with Chandler (23), Lee (30), and Ariza (44)] you can survive a botched Mardy Collins or Renaldo Balkman. Wasting the lottery picks though is what killed us.

Agreed about the lottery picks killing us. I think that was ultimately the nail in Isiah's coffin because those picks turned into LaMarcus Aldridge AND Joakim Noah for Eddy Curry. I would never have traded Eddy for one of those guys, let alone two. Aside from that trade, I had no qualms with Isiah because he had very little to work with. Every trade he made got us marginally better talent, which is ultimately what you need to make more deals and/or build a winner. Even so, I think Isiah gets far too much credit for his skills in the draft; the reasons for which I've already mentioned.

As for Mardy Collins, I think he is one of those guys that was never really given a chance. Isiah continually misutilized him and then Mike Dunleavy, who loved his game, got fired the following year after the Clippers traded for him. Had Collins been in a stable situation like the Spurs, I think he would've still been in the league as a capable rotation player. Even so, the dude sure as hell wasn't better than Paul Millsap, Ramon Sessions and Kyle Lowry.
