I wonder what the Mavericks will do with Dirk if they can't sign another star capable of turning them into a contender. He's said on multiple occasions that he intends on competing his last few years in the league, with or without the Mavericks. Would their be a shot at trading for him on the cheap if we could find a taker for Chandler's contract? Would he fit in with what we do?
A healthy Dirk would fit in on any team but we don't have the assets to get him.

I would think so. But, I think Chicago and Houston are better options for him and could put together a better trade package than us.

Yeah, I could see that. I don't think he wants a reigning favorite like the Heat though, which gives us a puncher's chance.
like someone who's #1 priority is winning he's already agreed to taking a pay cut to get two max guys in here. MVP caliber star guy like Dirk willing to play 3rd option is a nice drawing card for CP3 and Dwight. Great PG, beastly center and one of the best shooter in the game at the 4? Nice mix and they have the pieces to make it happen.

I can't see him going to Houston. are young and largely unproven, which do not bode well for championship prospects. I definitely see Chicago happening though; they have the right mix of veterans and are competitive enough to give him a fighting chance at a 2nd title.

The plan still involves the team having to get 2 stars, in a league where getting 1 is still difficult. We've been fooled by the Heat into thinking that teams signing stars is something common place but when was the last time I star changed addresses via free agency? It would have to be '96 with Shaq. It's a major reason why at the end of the day, I see both CP3 and Howard staying with their current teams (especially CP3 who will be signing his last max contract).
Chicago would be interesting but if they move Mavs become or already has became an interesting case study. They put their eggs in the D. Williams/Howard basket the year before only to come up empty. Now they are likely to come up empty again.

I'd tend to agree, sadly. This is a business and you can't compromise the future of your team, which means tens of millions dollars, to just be friendly to a player. The cap rules don't allow thatkind of gestures anymore.
You can still give him a front office position once his career is done though.
And I agree, a Dirk-Cp3-Dwight would be a hell of a team.
Nobody could defend that and I would rank them even better than Miami on roster balance alone.

How much can you really expect from a guy that's 35 years old, coming off a serious surgical procedure. Dirk's got maybe 2 more seasons in him at being a top 2 player on a contender.
