Knicks · The Brooklyn Nets can beat the Heat (page 4)

How many great-on-paper teams have we seen in recent memory? How many great-on-paper teams have we had in NY that have flopped come the regular season?
Nets have not earned the benefit of the doubt on this one. KG and Pierce (aside from being assholes) are in a race against father-time. Deron Williams is a great PG that earned himself an *if interested* asterisk. Kidd is coming into his first year as a coach at any level. Who's coming off the bench? (Seriously, aside from Terry and their draft picks, I can't name anyone left on the bench).

Get a billboard. Get a wheelchair. Get 4th place in the conference. Fuck the Nets.

I predict Heat Bulls Pacers nets and Knicks was the top 5 barring serious injuries

It would be interesting to see if the Cavs and the Wiz can squeeze into 6-8 seeds. Wall and Beal together is a really good combination and with if Varjao can stay healthy for the Cavs - they may make some noise.

Nets are going all in. they are mortaging their future to win next year so for tehir sake tehy better win otherwise they are screwed. They also have a lot of injury risks. DWill Lopez JJ and Garnett all have injury concerns

they're all in, but they're really all in,

not like us, we are fugazi 'all in',

I agree they went all in but they have much more talent than we got. When we went all in we gave up valuable assets and picks and yes we won 54 games but thats about it

Kidd know what it takes to play old, he should be able to figure out how to manage the rotations. They may even sacrifice regular season dominance for a healthy starting 5 during the playoffs. But they need to work on that bench still. Terry is good of course - but after that - IDK?

I think it was Broussard who said this but someone made the point that Kidd also needs to give them enough on court time to get their chemistry together. Completely agree about the bench as well.

The Nets made a poor decision. Depending on the Knicks back-up point guard situation, they're likely to remain better than the Nets this season.

Wow Broussard agreed with me? Hmm not sure how I feel about that :)
But from a pure talent/skill perspective they have the best starting 5 - it's not really close.

It will be interesting to see how he handles guys minutes when he is on the bench. I think a lot of coaches get caught up in the moment and forget the big picture when they are trying to win regular season games. Woodson was amazing at managing Amare's minutes until Melo went out and then he had him at his max or slightly over until he got hurt. Woodson struggled to limit Kidd's minutes when he was playing well and then had Kidd playing major minutes when Felton broke his finger. Vets know how to play and most coaches are perfectionists and struggle to let the young guys work through their growing pains.

By what metric? They lack dribble penetration in the half-court and speed in transition. Both Garnett and Lopez would be guarded 1 on 1 at this point by most elite teams. High post offense is mitigated by the average off the ball movement of their perimeter cast. Although a great perimeter shooting team, pick and roll options are limited without 3 point shooting at positions 4/5. They are average defensively on the perimeter and above average at 4/5. Average rebounding team.

All in all, a decent team with high injury risk, coaching on a learning curve, and one that will struggle, even if healthy, in multiple areas.

loweyecue @ 6/29/2013 11:02 PM
You think Deron williams and Jason Terry cannot penetrate? What teams have three point shooting at the 5 position? Both Pierce and Joe Johnson can draw double teams and can play off each other. I just have a ton of respect for Pierce's game and what he can do. He has deinitely slowed down but he is an incredibly crafty ballplayer.

No Terry can't and he's also not part of the starting 5 - which is what you were discussing. Williams' drive is reasonable but aimed more recently at setting up a pull-up jumper, partly evidenced by his declining free throw attempts, last year at only 4.7 per game. The remainder are 1 on 1 mid range players that are serviceable but declining.

dk7th @ 6/29/2013 11:55 PM
the challenge will be to get joe johnson to play the right way every minute he's on the floor.
yellowboy90 @ 6/30/2013 2:45 AM
Pierce was being guarded by Felton and was getting shut down. Also, who guards the opposing wings or 4s for that matter. Garnnet is a rim protector now. He is not someone I want on 4s.
Nalod @ 6/30/2013 8:15 AM
Me thinks Pierce becomes a role player who need only shine in limited minutes during a game.

Looks like Blatche will return, who needs to understand that KG will ride him hard but could if receptive understand the game better and how to get mentally tough.

IronWillGiroud @ 6/30/2013 9:51 AM
pierce and kg can still play at all star level, the key is in managing their minutes,

jason kidd will understand this because he is old too,

and their old guys are both hof, then they're balanced by another superstar in deron and a former semi-superstar in joe johnson, and brook lopez blew up last year,

foosballnick @ 6/30/2013 10:18 AM
I find this board fascinating. To some, anything the Knicks do is bad.

But at the same time, there seems to be high praise for the Nets who just traded all their depth and three first round picks for two fading, really old former all stars and a bench shooting guard. They just hired a new coach who was a HOF player, but has no experience nor credentials as a coach and has a past that includes wife beating, partying and DUI. They let go their former GM who built an outstanding roster, made two championship runs and stockpiled picks, and replaced him with a yes man who has depleted all of the picks and more and who has assembled a roster of old jump shooters, an injury riddled center, an ancient PF ....all with high contracts.

Bonn1997 @ 6/30/2013 11:03 AM
I'm not sure he's right but I found this quote interesting:
"the Nets certainly have the best starting lineup, talent-wise, in the NBA," - Jeff Van Gundy
If they're healthy, I think I'd still rather have OKC's or Miami's starting lineup.

Well apparently JVG also thinks the Nets have the best starting 5 in basketball. Go figure.
