I agree. Smith's playoff performance was horrible but the guy had a great year. Check out what guys were saying when it looked like the Knicks wouldn't be able to afford him.

I dont think people mind having JR here next year. They just dont want to give him a 4 year deal which i agree with. also the playoffs are kind of important for a "win now" team so its not good enough that he had a good regular season and an awful playoffs
I agree about the playoffs. However, how many teams had to rely on a guy making 2 million to be their second best player in the second round. I can't think of one. It is a fair deal and I think JR played himself out of a lot of money. He made strides last year. The guy is still only 27. Hopefully he grows up some more. He is good signing in my opinion he just shouldn't be the second option.

Not sure why you're so hung up on JR "only" making 2 million dollars a year, not in this economy. 2 million a year should be more than enough to motivate JR to keep his ish together when the chips are down. JR deserves a raise, but his "meager" 2 million dollars a year doesn't give him a pass for costing the team (by his own admission) 2 games against Boston, not to mention his performance against Indy.

what i contributed in the last of the 4 threads cited is incredibly astute and prescient don't you think?

i would not bet on him coming through for the knicks, sorry!

My point went more to the state of the Knicks last year and having to rely on a guy making slightly more than the vet mini as their number two guy. JR shouldn't have to be the number two guy and isn't reliable enough to fill that role on a good team. Also, I agree that his playoff performance was horrible. If it wasn't I doubt he is back because he had a really good season.

You know some of you guys are a trip! You act and complain like little old ladys. JR Smith is worth what he is getting. And who would you want to take JRs place. The same people on the forum complain about every move the knicks make then you complain like little old ladys all season long. JR Smith helped this team last season. The only thing that will make you happy will be if we tank the team and then you will complain who we sign. Please give it a rest!

It is what it is. He's worth that type of money and can be traded if the cap space is needed. He is great value for that cost so Don't think it's a concern. He and Felton will always be tradeable because you know what they can give you and they are affordable.

Not exactly. If it was a two year deal and JR stunk next year then it would be easier to trade him since he would be an expiring. Giving a unreliable guy like him 4 years isnt smart. Also felton loves new york and hates to play anywhere else. We all know how he did in portland but he is not as tough to move since he only has 2 years left i think

But what really makes JR smith unreliable? He has excelled in the same role his entire career. He is a hell of a 6th man and scoring spark off the bench. The only thing that makes him unreliable is when he is expected to be more than what he is. He is inconsistent and frustrating, but as a whole he has been solid in his role his entire career. He will never really lose his trade value at that cost unless something off the court or injury related occurs. The contract we sign him for is a bargain for a big time scorer and 6th man.

How is he unreliable? You're joking right? Maybe you missed his suspension and clubbing during the playoffs taht obviously had a horrible effect on him. Secondly besides last year JR smith was always a streaky player. Im a loyal fan but im also not afraid to call teh team out when i feel they are making a bad decision that may effect teh future. God knows the Knicks have earned taht criticism the past decaded

You are talking about what we tried to make him out to be. He's not that. He's a great 6th man and that's it.

I get what you're saying, but J.R has made it no secret that he wants to be a starter. Smith was talking about it going back two seasons. JR set the bar for himself and when it mattered most he didn't deliver. That's another reason why I don't believe his salary is germane to the issue. JR wanted more responsibility and he showed that he isn't ready for it.

I don't mind JR getting paid, he definitely earned a raise (somewhere) for being sixth man of the year, but considering what happened in the playoffs, I don't believe that he earned a 4 year deal.

I don't think anybody would complain about signing Andrew Wiggins.....I never seen a full game, but his highlights are sick!

he's a regular-season player and that's about it.

please, knicks management: lets find someone who won't fold like a beach chair in every way imaginable, ok?

nixluva @ 7/4/2013 12:18 AM
I think we as fans have to live in the real world and as such, this team has a flawed Star in Melo and last year the 2nd best player was JR. We won a lot of games with that tandem so it's only reasonable that the Knicks would look to keep them together and hopefully add to the talent pool on the team. The way that things went with other teams sucking up the FA talent, it pretty much is forcing JR and the Knicks toward each other. That's not necessarily and bad thing. The key is for the team to improve the talent on the team so that we don't have to rely on just Melo or JR. I believe the Knicks are doing their best to make this team better.

I agree. He is a good player that shouldn't be the second option. Letting him leave with the hopes of finding a comparable talent with the vet mini or undrafted rookie mini doesn't make sense. He needs to be the sixth man.

Perfect scenario would be to resign JR to a 2 year deal.

However, even a 4 year deal is by no stretch a franchise killing blow. If he continues his level of play we're getting him at a decent price and he would be an attractive piece for a trade down the line. Heck, even at $6.5 per year that's only around $2.75 more than we had committed to Novak.

Even on a 4 year deal we have a ton of cap space down the line.

Good signing, bitches going to bitch............ if he plays like he did to clinch the 6MOY award from oct to april, we'll be here next year.

Our bad, forgot that calling fellow Knicks fans "bitches" from behind a computer miles away makes you a real man.

smackeddog @ 7/4/2013 3:48 AM
People expecting/ hoping for a 2 year deal were kidding themselves- everyone knew that wasn't going to happen, come on! He signed for less than he could have got last season, so we still owe him for that. Likely the bucks offered him a 4yr deal and he decided he'd rather stay with us- its not a case of the market drying up.

We all knew he was getting a max length deal, seems like you just started this 'oh hope it's 2 years' nonsense so you could complain more when the inevitable happened.

FrenchKnicks wrote:I'm happy about that, JR was a great player for us last year, we really needed him.
In the situation we're in, we had to get him back not to regress from last year. Any way you look at it, he's an asset on a team that has few opportunities to get better. It's not like the money we'll give him would have gone to an other player anyway !

Besides, the CBA will protect the Knicks against themselves, they can't top 6mil or so for the first year which is great value for a player like JR.

People who say you can find that type of performance in the D League discredit themselves by saying that. Under Woodson, JR is great and I welcome him back.

+1
