Knicks · Pablo Prigoni Signs 3yr $6mil (page 1)

Even if the 3rd yr is a TO with partial why even offer that to a 36yr old point guard?

gunsnewing @ 7/4/2013 4:30 PM
So no Brand, Kmart or Cope since we only have $1.75 of the MLE and vet min deals left
tj23 @ 7/4/2013 4:37 PM
Meh I like Prigs but not enough to bring him back for anything above minimum. Need guards who can drive to SCORE AND PASS.
3G4G @ 7/4/2013 4:43 PM
My bad deleted thought the tweet said Knicks. Never made sense, so I looked at the tweet again with Wojo updating so pay no mind about Jose.

Not sure why a 3rd yr had to be offered to Pablo. 2yrs provides him full BR if he should happen to want another contract at maximum figures. I don't care if say he pockets 500k in the last yr on a partial if we pass on picking up his option...totally unnecessary. You give him 2yrs $6.5-7mil if possible and call it a day.

We have those already in Shump and JR.

what we wouldn't have had if Pablo didnt sign was a pg who can defend and run a steady offense to looks to pass first and shoot only when open.

So you wanted to give him the full mini mle?

Is there a difference having $1mil of that kitty in the pot to sign someone? I think not.

holfresh @ 7/4/2013 4:57 PM
Dude is slower than molasses and we gave him 3 yrs..Wow...

Excuse me the Tax Payer MLE is $3.183mil...

So a 2yr deal with 7% raises is....

1yr = $3.183mil
2yr = $3.411mil
_______________

Total $6.594mil it couldn't have reached $7 but I was close enough

$3.183mil - $2mil = $1.183mil(which isn't a whole lot of room to sign anyone) except possibly THE BEST PURE SCRUB....so yes just give him the MLE with the 3yr open at $0 dollars.

that's still above the vet min.

nixluva @ 7/4/2013 5:04 PM
Knicks did the right thing here. There record with Prigs starting or part of a 5 man is really great. You can't look at that and just ignore the fact that the team played better with him on the floor. To complain about having to pay him just a bit more than vet minimum is stupid. He's a bargain.

As for the rest of the MLE we have left, it's not meaningless. Every dollar counts at this point. We don't know how that money gets used. It could be used to keep Cope. We don't know yet. I think we need to stop panicking over all of these small moves as if they will harm the team somehow. Right now we have a better roster going into next year and we still have continuity which is very important.

Pablo was the second best point guard Knick for 27gms games of the regular season..The Knicks had no choice..Unless u want to see Melo shoot 26% from 3 when he's off the floor compared to shooting 43% when he's on the floor.

Just imagine how giddy you're going to be when the Knicks "HAVE CHOICES"....

Finestrg @ 7/4/2013 6:25 PM
Anyone think there's enough money left to sign Aaron Brooks or did that ship sail?

If guys like Collison and Brooks are too expensive at this point, what other choices do we have for a speedy PG that makes sense for vet minimum or league minimum-type money? Tony Taylor Jr.? Anyone know anything about that kid really?

Brooks and Brand, man... A speedy, skilled PG AND a better PF than K-Mart...The Knicks love vets, man. LOVE 'EM. I actually could've lived with these 2. Hard to accept that resigning Pablo Prigioni may have ruined that plan.

RonRon @ 7/4/2013 6:45 PM
2nd vet year is 900k
vet min can be offered 2 year contracts

Randy Foye made 2m last season, with a 1 year contract
I know they are both complete different players but feel we didn't need to overpay to keep Pablo, he is a 3rd string PG and should get no more than a 2year vet min deal with the our needs to fill

Positives
============
I think Pablo brings a lot of good qualities, with leadership, pass first mentality, and a TEAM oriented player team that rewards players that moves off the ball/cuts

Negatives
=============
He is not a penetrating threat/scoring threat except for 3pointers (In the play offs, vs a title contender with good defense, he probably won't be able to do even more)
He has a problem defending PG's and/or SG's
The lack of burst of speed, quickness, and overall speed is a real concern

Brand is such a Knick's pick, going for the broken down "big name" at the end of his career
I think he has been done in HUGE DECLINE the past 2 seasons already and will break down even more
I personally would rather much have Kmart, who I still think has mobility/athleticism

Aaron Brooks could be a steal although I haven't watched him play much last season, in Houston 2years ago he was lightning quick with a very good 3point shot and is still young
Really like Jannero Pargo for FIT for Woodson and team as well
I would prefer a younger PG like Andre Roberts or even Charles Jenkins but know Woodson likes VETS, problem is we need speed and quickness and that comes with YOUTH

GustavBahler @ 7/4/2013 7:11 PM
I'll be happier about Prigs staying if we get another PG in the rotation who can get to the rim and also draw defenders and fouls. Pablo being put into the starting lineup near the end of the season made a big difference, but his inability (or unwillingness) to take it to the rim hurt us as well.

Smart guy, low maintenance, and a team player, glad he's back

playa2 @ 7/4/2013 9:18 PM
All we have to do is let Prigs defend the least talented offensive player on the opossing team , like the use to do with Steve Nash Mark Price etc....

This is exactly why I want Will Bynum.

Have to admit that I don't remember all that much about him. If he can take it to the rim and does a good job of distributing the ball then I'm all for it.

We're spending a lot of money just to bring back a 1 year older version of last season's back-court!

Point guard Pablo Prigioni agreed to a three-year deal with the New York Knicks, his agent said Thursday.

Prigioni's contract will start at about $1.5 million, agent George Bass said, but it can increase to $2 million with incentives.

Here's a look at what it means for the Knicks, and what's next for New York in free agency:

[+] EnlargePablo Prigioni
Jim McIsaac/Getty ImagesThe Knicks' 13-game winning streak last season coincided with Pablo Prigioni being promoted to the starting lineup.
Point guard stability: Jason Kidd's retirement made signing Prigioni one of the Knicks' top offseason priorities.

Now that Prigioni's back, Mike Woodson can use the two-point-guard lineup -- featuring Prigioni and Raymond Felton -- that he was fond of last season.

Prigioni's presence will allow Felton to move off the ball and become more of a scorer than a distributor.

Prigioni, 36, also brings a lot on the defensive end of the floor. The end-to-end pressure he puts on opposing guards can disrupt and delay an opponent's offense.

Part of Prigioni's value also lies in his ability to keep the ball moving. As Chris Herring of the Wall Street Journal adeptly points out, the Knicks' ball movement improved markedly when Prigioni was on the floor in the playoffs -- and Carmelo Anthony was one of the main beneficiaries. According to Herring, Anthony hit 43 percent of his 3-pointers with Prigioni on the floor but knocked down just 26 percent of his attempts when Prigioni was on the bench.
