This isn't hard to figure out....the moves we've made center around what makes Melo happy or a better player or takes the load off him or lends to his style of play.
Ironically most of the moves we made center around offense. I'll go on record now...we're going to have a hard time this year making the playoffs. Too many bad teams got better and the strong teams got stronger than we did.

I don't agree, i give mike woodson a 50+ win season any day of the week..Thats what he hangs his hat on, it's when they playoffs start, thats when the head scratching begins..besides that, the team hasn't even been fully put together and you assuming the worst..that in it's self is head scratching..

Bargnani is a more accomplished and proven player than Copeland. He'll be playing.

So now I understand Woody's problem.
If he wants them to kick it out when doubled....Then that explains the contested shots Melo and JR take when it's 1 on 1, trying to force the defense to double. But what happens when your shots aren't falling? Thats the main problem with this team.
If there's no double teams, then Woody gives Melo and JR the green light to take their man. The problem is when you face a team that doesn't have to double (Indy, Miami) you lose because JR and Melo just took mostly contested 1 on 1 shots all game, waiting for a double team that never came. While everybody else stands around and watch!
Woody's system needs to improve, just like the players. I want to see some adjustments this season offensively from Woodson!

If Mike Woodson can coach the most productive pro season of his career out of the gifted but immature JR Smith, is it unreasonable that he can coach excellence out of the Charmin soft Andrea Bargnani?
Speculation is entertaining. The primary task of an NBA coach is convincing grown men to work together.
The storyline of the Knicks season is how Melo and Bargnani cohere. If they find some rhythm and respect it could be fun to watch.
Since gunsnewing cannot ask Mike Woodson what type of team he wants, The Answer Man would submit that Mike Woodson wants a winning team.
the knicks are going to underachieve next season if not outright implode, and it will be more immediately because of the leadership void but also the build-up of "plan scrapping" dating back to the melo trade.
it seems that some of you believe that there is some sort of magical critical mass point that will occur but there will be no critical mass point with a roster that is now overwhelmed by regular-season fool's gold players being coached by a regular-season fool's gold coach. there will be no cohesion or synergy with this motley collection.
the only antidote for a lack of offensive cohesion is defense and rebounding and the knicks have neither.
sure, they are "professionals" who are paid to "show up" every night, but the impossibility of cohering will ultimately erode any collective will. to fight that erosion you need leadership on the floor and on the bench. the knicks have neither.

the knicks peaked last season, and it is not only because of their own disarray but also the fact that other teams have improved. last year's hot start was based primarily on defense and offensive cohesion, the latter due to kidd's presence. later in the season prigioni brought something similar but early on the knicks lost any genuine defense-first mentality-- and it caught up with them in the playoffs.
now they are so lopsidedly offensive, but porous and soft, that implosion is a distinct possibility. that is why i put "underachieve" as the more obvious outcome, but without leadership that underachievement can certainly metastasize into implosion, including the firing of woodson sometime during the season.
