Knicks · Has Grunwald made one good move for the Knicks that count towards this year? (page 2)

PF downgrade, vets a year older, and Copeland and probably K-Mart gone? While many teams in the east improved? The only plus is that Shumpert should be healthy.
I'd predict a win change of about -7

If we had a PF downgrade - does that mean we upgraded the SF position?

Offseason Knicks sign a decent player: Grunwald GM of the year
Offseason Knicks dont do anything for a day or two: What has Grunwald done at all?

Get a hold of yourselves guys.

Not really about 1 day plus or minus. I was just thinking back about how we were trying to reacquire the draft pick we just drafted?? We make good finds in Lin and Copeland--but we didnt use tam options for 3 years to keep their salaries low and the players with us. We give away picks when we dont need to overpaying on every trade. We just did the over 35 thing with the bigs last year--now we are moving to the smalls? We sign Novak Camby and Kidd for 12mm and then a year later one is retired the other two moved for Barganai who no one wanted--and we had to give them three picks. Just the way we do things--we set ourselves up for problems. Its not about emotion--its about management

And that starts at the top, and who is in charge of this organization? Dolan. And as long as that mental midget is in charge, this organization will continue to be a joke and laughing stock. Any competent managers are run of out of the organization.

Can you explain "power forward downgrade"?

He can't really explain it. This is self hating Knick fan talk! The Knicks will field a stronger team this year than last. We already have all the key players returning healthy. We still don't have the final roster, but what we do know is the core we have is capable of 54 wins and we still have more talent to add. I think the demise of the NY Knicks has been greatly exaggerated.

The loss of Cope is offset plus some by adding a legit starting quality player like AB and a legit SG who should be able to contribute right away in THJ. I'm predicting CJ Leslie will be a useful reserve this year. He's much more talented than some realize. I think his game will fit the NBA much better than college. CJ will have more space to operate and with all the attention our top players will get from defenses, CJ will be free to attack the basket.

Unfortunately Grunwald is in a tough situation because his boss doesn't want to think long term. Two of our "big three" are too often injured which means players who would be more complimentary pieces are counted on even more than they should be.

Grunwald had nothing to do with signing Stat but his contract and his injuries makes it hard for him to make big moves. I didn't like that JR was brought back but I can see why he gave him a new deal because of his production and our cap restraints.

Grunwald is operating within a box that Dolan put him in and his hands are tied by 2 players in Tyson and Stat who are difficult or in Stat's case are impossible to move, until maybe the very end.

The jury is still out on Bargs so I'm withholding judgement on what kind of a job he's done this offseason and there is still time to sign another PG who can get to the rim.

The underlying philosophy that prevents Grunwald from doing the same thing that Boston is doing is messed up but I don't believe that's how I would describe his performance, for the most part. We also have a very good scouting staff and Grunwald listens to them.

I'm hoping that Grunwald is trying to sell Dolan on the idea of making another run at all star caliber FAs in 2015 while trying to win now, its a lot on his plate but that's what he's getting paid the big bucks for. I believe its too early to tell if the moves he's making now will pay off next season.

Let's just call it a "forward" downgrade since Bargs will be taking minutes from K-Mart, Novak, and Copeland.

It's a little too early to say that about K-mart until he signs somewhere else, no?

If Ron Artest returns home, all bets are off
misterearl @ 7/10/2013 11:59 AM
Grunwald's best move was being ready to pounce on CJ Leslie

Presently he's an FA. If he re-signs, that would help and the PF downgrade would be slightly smaller.

Is Andrea Bargnani an upgrade from Danilo Gallinari?

You make the call

No, Bargs is about 10 to 15 points per 100 possessions worse than Gallo.
They're both tall white Italian men. That's where the similarities end.

We started off the year with Kurt Thomas in the starting lineup, and Rasheed Wallace attempting a comeback from retirement. Tip of the hat to both players, they gave it their all, but talentwise, we've certainly upgraded (and this is coming from someone who doesn't care for Bargs).

The K-Mart situation hasn't been resolved yet and Cope sparingly got any meaningful minutes last year, outside of a half dozen games toward the end of the season. Hopeful Kenyon will be brought back.

And are we still talking about Novak as though he was productive? The only reason Cope got his chances was because Novak was auditioning for Hollow Man 3. His big moments came as overkill when team shooting was already on fire and the defense left him. I'm amazed at 6'10, he had such trouble getting a shot off at the perimeter. Put a folding chair in front of him, and he might only get 2 attempts off. /rant

Bottom line, we're just getting into the offseason. What we have lost is certainly replaceable. Interested in seeing the finished product.

ChuckBuck @ 7/10/2013 12:37 PM
If we somehow resign K-Mart, I'd say we may have improved marginally the forward position. Subtract Novak's and Copeland's non-existent D, and add K-Mart's and Bargnani's surprising D(based on advanced statistics), and you get a net positive.

Offensively, no comparision. Bargs is better than both Cope(barely played) and Novak(non-existent) put together.

Is it Grunwald/Knicks' mistake that many of the league min FA finds generally get straight-up 1 year contracts, with no team option for 2+? Or is that the CBA/cap that prevents us from doing this? (I believe a guy like Patrick Beverley of the Rockets had similar success as Copeland, but had a team option for year 2)

I was surprised that a contract with a player like Copeland or Prigioni (or KMart - or any find, really) wouldn't include a team option for a 2nd year in the event that the big bet on the player works out.

These players hypothetically don't have a lot of demand, which is why they're signing at or near the league min for a reason.

He has done well with the 1 year deal guys Copeland , Prigs , Kmart, JR. All the moves after the 1 year deals werent that great though

Felton was the best move by far. His contract is good value to which is amazing.

Rather than seeing players as individuals, why do so many people ignore the importance of how they relate as a tandem? A team?

Carmelo will respect Bargnani's willingness to play Robin to his Batman and the two men will discover an effective floor personality that shocks the so-called, self-appointed experts.

With less responsibility for the secondary scoring role, JR Smith ramps up his reputation as a defensive-minded pest and becomes the third scoring option.

I Man Shumpert takes another step forward and builds his portfolio as a dependable 15 and 6 player.

You heard it here first.
