Knicks · Why Artest matters... (page 1)

He will set a hard nosed take no prisoners tone & that will be a difference maker against teams like Indiana, Brooklyn & Miami!!!

(note Mike Breen at the 3:00 mark "Ron Artest has a look in his eyes that's VERY SCARY right now")

Bonn1997 @ 7/17/2013 6:52 PM
Just because a guy has big muscles and loves to elbow players doesn't mean he'll help you win games.
ActionJackson @ 7/17/2013 7:00 PM
Every team needs an enforcer. I absolutely think with Artest & hopefully a re-signed K-Mart people will think twice about fouling Melo with dangerous intent & punks like KG will keep their comments to themselves about another man's wife.

I think you're a bit too caught up on our team being "macho." It sounds like the concern of a guy who drives the biggest SUV he can find and has a dozen guns at home. Just get some good two way players. I don't care if their muscles are as small as Dirk's.
ActionJackson @ 7/17/2013 7:07 PM
but yet we mythologize the good ol days of the 90s right???
StarksEwing1 @ 7/17/2013 7:12 PM
The Knicks still have plenty of question marks. i liked the signing but i think some are acting like Artest is the missing piece. We still have no depth at C/PF. teams like Miami/Bulls/Pacers and even the nets are better than us right now

Agree. It is nice to have Ron.

wasn't it kenyon who was yapping that he had carmelo's back? I was like, what is that all about.. and how did it work out? again, being tough doesn't mean being stupid.. at times, a lot of times artest is just stupid and that cost his team...

OasisBU @ 7/17/2013 7:40 PM
I'll reserve my judgement for what he does on the court as a Knick. He has been in decline for a whole so it's not like we are getting a guy at the top of his game. That being said, I hope he can contribute and do it consistently. I want that from every player on the roster, enough of the dead weight on the bench.

A team that is returning the bulk of its core after a 54 win season doesn't have "plenty of question marks" !!! This statement has been overused by self hating Knicks fans and media IMO. We have needs at the end of our rotation with another PG and a C. Still even before the roster has been complete we have 11 solid players already.

Adding MWP is a good move because he is a solid role player who won't be pushed around and that will help this team. It's not about MWP being the final piece to a title. We've still got 4 roster spots to fill. The Nets added AK47 to enhance the roster and it's no different with MWP. People tend to want to poo poo these small moves but tell me how small was it when we added KMart? He really made a huge difference. When a role player is good at filling his role it makes the team better. Just like Andersen for the Heat. These are guys that play with force and can have an impact.

Well I think he said that regarding the Celts and it looked like the Knicks were going to sweep them. It got dicey but I am fine with the outcome and I don't recall Melo's play suffering because KG was menacing.

First fo all im not a "self hating Knick fan". Considering basketball is my favorite sport to play and the Knicks are my favorite team I can pretty much gurantee that im probably an even bigger/loyal Knick fan than you are. You tend misinterpret things I have noticed. Just because i dont agree with every move the Knicks make doesnt make me an unloyal fan.

This was a huge signing. The Knicks only have mini contracts to offer so to land a guy like Artest withoug giving up anything was a big score. Grunwald has to wait for guys to fall through the cracks to fill out the roster. I do think Amare, Tyson, and Bargs will all get a chance at the 5 and Melo is going to get most of his minutes at the 4. Also, Artest can play the three or four.

Again did i say that Artest was a bad signing? In fact i said many times i liked the signing. I mean as big of a Knick fan as i am i also try to be as fair as possible. The Knicks still have some work to do especially in the Frontcourt. I mean again everything isnt perfect thats all im saying

This is a thread about why ARtest matters not what is wrong with the KNicks. Obviously threads spin and the topic changes but positives here often are overlooked by what wasn't done or how bad things are because of what still needs to be done. This is a tone that this forum takes sometimes and I find it frustrating. Not aimed at you specifically but a lot of positives have happened over the past couple of years. I spent years complaining about how things were run and being frustrated with what was being done. I think the current administration does not have the ability to do much because of the cap and the shedding of assets from previous administrations. When the Knicks get lucky and a guy like Ron falls into their laps for nothing I think it is a really good thing. There wasn't and still isn't any cap space or assets to move to get more bigs.

I do think you are overreacting a tad. I mean most knick fans love the artest move because he can still play despite his issues. His defense will help alot too. I love positivity but i do think you get too upset with people who are great fans but might have a different opinion.

I like others have had my issues with certain moves the Knicks have made, but from my perspective you have to acknowledge that they have been trying to put together a winning team and the record has been improving so they're obviously doing something right. That loss to the Pacers doesn't mean the Knicks aren't in the same league as the other top teams in the East. We simply had guys like Kidd, Tyson and JR wear down and I would add Felton to that list too. SO they have to add more talent to the team so they have more help and won't wear down the top players.

The main issue last year was that the older vets they brought in weren't able to make it thru the entire season and that was the main complaint about the team last year before the season started! It actually worked out as many predicted in terms of the problem with old players breaking down.

This year they have for the most part gotten much younger and better. They've replaced the old guys with more capable younger players. MWP is not ancient, even tho he's older, he's in great shape. If AK47 is a great move for the Nets the same should be said for MWP. AK47 and MWP are in pretty much the same stage of their careers. But if it's a Knicks move then the player must be washed up and of little value.

yeah im not sure what thats about as well, whats he going to do, start a riot if some one talk sht to melo or gives him a hard foul..

Woody in the mix!!!!

I like the Artest oops... World Peace signing for the following:

1. He plays defense.
2. He rebounds.
3. He will give hard fouls.
4. He wants to be here.
5. He can play.
6. ENFORCER!

IronWillGiroud @ 7/18/2013 6:31 AM
i doubt not that artest is the beast filthy bully presence you are talking about,

my concern is that, like with kidd, it is too little too late for artest to drop the buckets for us in significant role,

we will get that tease all year, of what artest would have brought us a few years ago, but now, he will maybe coach boston next season

I don't think the FO thought of him as a 2nd scorer they're adding. If anything, that was the trade for Bargs.

Like Cash Money posted, those are the specific reasons he is here. To be a glue guy who hustles, fouls hard and gets everyone going. Tyson Chandler can try to fake his enforcer role all he wants and I'm not saying he isn't a solid defender, but he is no enforcer even when he commits a hard foul. He just could never convince me, even after winnning DPOY.

It seemed like everytime some little scrap went down last yr, no one had one another's back. I'm not saying I wanna see Artest yolk a guy up after they foul somebody hard, but just having the team and opponents know that could happen can bring some more camraderie among them.

With Artest, I expect more overall team toughness, less complaining to the refs and more accountability on the D. I think that's why he is here and I am so happy he finally a Knick.

Been a long time coming... QB
