Knicks · I often wonder why substance abuse in the NBA is rare (page 1)

knicks1248 @ 7/23/2013 12:18 PM
Besides a few weed smokers, it seems like the NFL and MLB get 100x more players with substance abuse issues then the NBA..

I'm just curious why is that? What are there test procedures?

PresIke @ 7/23/2013 12:28 PM
just off hand one could argue that strength is more important to success in those two sports than in b-ball.

not to say that strength is not valuable, but you need to be more fit/athletic/quick than bulky to perform well in basketball.

the impact on statistics/the game is just not as significant as it is in baseball (regarding home runs/power) or nfl (being able to run over/through other huge players/take/make big hits).

not to say that it is not relevant, because clearly strength allows for players to endure (i.e. lebron) and succeed, particularly if you are a player that goes to the rack. thing is, some players in the past, i believe, have argued that getting too bulky interferes with their shooting.

otherwise, i don't know the rules regarding performance enhancing substances in the nba, but it is a good question.

my personal view is i could care less, either way. the use of such drugs is just a reflection of the values of our society as a whole. a winner takes all culture certainly incentivizes such behavior...ask wall street...do we actually punish them for their same approach towards earning money? nope.

PresIke @ 7/23/2013 12:30 PM
that being said, this ex-yankee/baseball fan does enjoy seeing his old team suffer in the press.
PresIke @ 7/23/2013 12:32 PM
also, i don't really follow baseball anymore, but does braun consider himself jewish? i read on baseball-reference looking him up earlier today that he is called the 'hebrew hammer' or something...

a new existential crisis for a hero of jewish baseball fans this must be...

Is it rare or just not tested effectively?
knicks1248 @ 7/23/2013 1:02 PM
I know I may get ridicule for saying this, but even as a big time yankee fan and a avg mlb fan, the mlb is as boring as its ever been since the crack down on ped..it was much more exciting when bonds, mcguire, sosa arod, ect were slapping balls out the park, and getting clutch hits..I dont advocate cheating the sport, but I totally understand the need for it..

I think the penalty if you get cuaght should be a massive pay deduction for the life of the contract, and less games suspended, which means you will do the same work for less pay, and your contract will be now base on incentives..

They could just solve this by juicing the ball a little bit.
Also, they could make the sport a lot more interesting if they found a way to speed up the time between pitches. The cat and mouse between pitcher and hitter stepping out of the box and off the mound just kills the sport. Too damn slow.

IronWillGiroud @ 7/23/2013 1:16 PM
baseball is just past its time,

you can't make it exciting again without radically altering the texture of the game,

this is what the drugs did in the 90s: you can think of the 90s steroids like this:

baseball recognizes it is losing its power, so it compensates by juicing up,

now they cannot juice legally yet and i do not know if the mlb will make it to the Legal Drug Era in pro sports,

PresIke @ 7/23/2013 1:22 PM
yep, bottom line is baseball is a sport in decline. they should really just allow the players to take drugs for the sake of the game.

again, if it comes out that nba players use ped's i could really care less (seems likely), and i do stand by my point that it has a little less of an impact on the game than the other sports.

PresIke @ 7/23/2013 1:26 PM
sports are entertainment. should we test cirque du soleil performers as well?

i do get it if you are player and don't want to take the drugs and the other athletes have an advantage over you...but hey, maybe that's just the breaks...

PresIke @ 7/23/2013 1:28 PM
however, there is a bit of irony that this cry for 'fairness' is mostly spoken about in american sports with baseball...

easily the least fair sport to follow as a fan in all the major sports by having no salary cap...

bro, no disrespect, but you wouldn't be the first to speculate about lebron on this. and who's 'deer antler?' there really isn't a whole lot of real evidence about lebron as he has been a physical beast since he was a teenager.

i would not say it is not possible that he has used/uses, but we could speculate about a whole lot of players, as more players have crazy physiques than in the past, but i am sure players we saw in the late 80's and 90's were probably using as well.

we could speculate about many players of that era...oakley, the admiral, karl malone, zo, lj, shaq (who definitely beefed up after college), etc. etc.

PresIke @ 7/23/2013 2:20 PM
do fans care as much if players juice in the nba compared to mlb or the nfl?

just wondering.
Nalod @ 7/23/2013 2:21 PM
53 players on 30 teams, thats 1590 players. Gets much larger if you go practice squad which holds 90 (2700).

25 man rosters on MLB teams, thats 800 pros. Go to 40 in Sept, then its 1280 players. There are also 240 minor league teams. Thats 600 in the minors.

NBA roster is has 14 players, and 30 teams. Thats 420 players. Add 204 if you want to include D-league.

I think its shear numbers has to factor in as well as what has been mentioned.

y2zipper @ 7/23/2013 3:33 PM
Basketball and Baseball are very similar in terms of relevance. The NBA has drawn better recently in the playoffs because of the Heat but historically, ratings are about the same. But these sports are local for the most part anyway.

As far as juicing goes, more players in baseball, background and culture of other countries ( specifically Latin America), and people care more about it because numbers validate the game (although historically you could say that every era is tainted by segregation, cheaters and drug users). I don't support juicing, but it's not THAT far away from the past as people want to believe.

Knixkik @ 7/23/2013 3:38 PM
The speed and power aspect really makes PEDs more useful in baseball and football. I feel like they can't improve the run/jump abilities of basketball players or the skill of shooting/ball handling (in comparison to the skill and power of hitting a baseball) like in the other 2 sports. Only real use would be in recovery speed, which is probably a small issue in basketball. Other than that, i just don't see the advantage of using PEDs in basketball.

They are similar now, but opposite in trejectory. Baseball is a top heavy sport on the downslide, basketball is a sport with more distributed fanbase and being the most popular sport in social media shows the direction the sport is headed in terms of popularity.

Nalod @ 7/23/2013 3:49 PM
What does poplularity have to do with PED's?

Its testing and how many in the sample.

Very true....I also think Baseball protecting its so-called legends and past records is a joke. They didn't have steroids as we know it now back in the 1930's-1960's but they certainly had greenies, etc. As long as there is an advantage to be had, you will see your share of athletes looking for that edge.
