Surprised no one brought this up. Jimmy Bean can't be happy after spending Billions of his own money on renovations and having the building torn down in only 10 short years. Maybe the Knicks will move to Newark and become the new NJ Nets and officially second class citizens to Brooklyn

This afternoon City Council voted 47-1 to limit Madison Square Garden’s permit to 10 years. The arena, sitting atop Penn Station, had requested a permit in perpetuity, but a coalition of government officials, preservationists, and transportation advocates protested and pushed for a truncated 10-year renewal. Critics hope this term limit will ultimately encourage the re-location of the Garden to allow for a complete overhaul of the train station and an improved arena. they just limited the permit to ten years - more like 10-20 years before anything even starts to move forward.
I've been spending too much time transit Grand Central and Penn - and what a world of difference. Penn is an absolute dump. Unacceptable how hot it is now in the summer. And ugly!
The city has been so corrupt for the whole 70s-90s...so now when corny cities are actually now better than nyc, we now have to deal with the bullshit......all these years no maintainance it upgrades....so now these Fucks want to do everything all atty the same time.

Good. Penn Station desperately needs an overhaul, it's completely insufficient for the amount of traffic that goes through there on a daily basis. And it's not as if MSG hasn't moved before; its current location is the 4th different one since its inception back in 1879. It would also be nice if the outside of the arena gave off a sense of majesty and grandness that the current one lacks. If you ever visit other arenas, though generally not NBA arenas, they're very impressive to see from outside. MSG looks like an office building from outside.
As for Dolan spending his own money to renovate the Garden, that's bullshit. Knicks ticket prices have increased nearly 50% over the last two seasons and are supposedly being increased another 20%+ for this coming season. And I'm sure, though I don't know, that Rangers tickets have probably done the same thing. So Dolan hasn't paid for anything, those of us who go to see the team in person have.

How about moving it to the Javits center, basicaly a few blocks over.
i'm glad. sorry, i love watching games at msg, but that ish and especially penn station should be elsewhere. penn station is beyond overcrowded, and unsuitable for a city of such size...it's basically a monstrosity of architecture, usability, and design.

Believe it when I see it- they'll spend so much time putting making a final decision, that it will never end up happening. This vote just means they are putting off making a decision for ten years.
And why can't they just move the train station a block or two- all you need to do is extend the tracks.

You are right - it will be at least 10 yrs and then they will be granted an extension so they can find a suitable place. I think 12 to 15 yrs. Moving MSG would be welcomed in 10 years. No big deal.
As everyone has said, Penn Station is a dump. Most of you weren't around when the old Penn Station existed. It had a similar style and ambiance as Grand Central Station. And one could actually breathe there.

There was a plan to move Penn station - that I'm glad died because they were talking about have the NJ Transit platforms even deeper underground - reminiscent of the path station at old world trade - and when I was taking the train every day, I would have hated that extra hassle - not to mention, it was inherently unsafe as there there would have been long choke points if folks en mass had to evacuate a dangerous condition.
City messed that one up bad!
I figure it will take 20 years to do this which is all the renovation is likely good for. there was talk of knocking down the post office next door and build a garden there.
This year the big buzz will be the "flying bridge"!

It looks like an office building because it basically is one! 2 Penn is what fronts MSG on 7th ave. I used to work there, and would always feel bad for the tourists looking for MSG - and all they could really do is take pictures of the oversized ranger and knick posters that are on the sides of 2 penn.
As for the Dolan renovation - he will use that to leverage a sweet heart deal out of the city - watch!- he will become even richer with public assistance!

Look at the pics of the old station.. it was a truley beautiful structure and a crying shame it was torn down.
There has been a "plan" to expand the tunnel to accomodate the NJ traffic for about 20 years now.
As for MSG I used to love going but I wont go to Knick game unless I get a free pass. I just wont give Dolans a dollar of my money.
I want this season to make a road trip to NYC and see both a game in the Garden and Barclay's.
I better start saving now!
not one mention of th ereal issue - taxes. As I understand it, MSG sits on tax exempt land. That's why Jimmy sunk all the money into rennovations instead of moving to a better facility.

I hear that a lot, but just by watching the games the advertising revenue is increased. The more viewers, the more money they get for each ad aired.

I did bring it up, right before it was voted on. This sucks....if MSG moves, can it still be called the worlds most famous arena since, it won't be the same arena?
That said, I can imagine what a New Arena would look like. Dolan WILL MAKE SURE any new Knicks venue will make the Nets arena look like a porta potty.

I remember that...think they lost a bid or something but, they did want to move it there. How crazy would it be if they moved to Nassau County? Don't see that actually happening but, I would personally welcome such a move.
