IMO, Donnie Walsh hurt the Knicks by signing Amare and didn't make us a contender. I don't think he knowingly sabotaged the Knicks but he definitely screwed us with the Amare signing. He didn't build a championship team in Indiana and did not really do much for the Knicks other than acquire Melo. The Melo trade fell in his lap. Melo wanted to come here so Walsh didn't really bring Melo to NYC. And if rumors are true, that was Dolan. These are some of the moves he made as the Knicks GM.
- Hired D'Antoni
- Drafted Gallinari and acquired Chris Duhon (missed out on Brook Lopez and Roy Hibbert)
- Traded
Jamal Crawford for Al Harrington
- Traded Mardy Collins and
Zach Randolph- Acquired Larry Hughes, Chris Wilcox and waived Marbury
- Drafted Landry Fields
- Let David Lee walk and signed
Amare Stoudemire, Ray Felton and Mozgov
- Traded for Melo
From what I can tell, he traded away talent and signed and drafted injury prone players. Then he left cause Dolan forced him to make the Melo trade. What exactly did he do to make the Knicks a championship team? Signing Amare was his best move and Amare is a bigger injury case than Allan Houston! Donnie Walsh really sucked here. In fact, he wasn't an all-star GM in Indiana either. What has he done to make the Pacers a championship team? Larry Bird got them Paul George and Roy Hibbert! Sure Walsh didn't make as many major blunders as Layden and Isiah Thomas but what major move did he make to improve the Knicks? Amare and Gallo are injury prone, Ray Felton is a decent PG and D'Antoni was terrible.
I like what Grunwald has done. Hope he can figure out a way to trade Amare!
I agree- I think since IT and Laden were so awful and traumatic, everyone including myself, were just so relieved IT was gone, that everything Walsh did seemed like magic in comparison!
Looking back, he made a lot of mistakes and I'm glad he's gone. Top of the list were his drafting of Jordan Hill (everyone new it was a bad pick at the time), and the trade with Houston to clear cap space we didn't really end up needing. David Lee trade turned out to be awful as well.
Plus, never forget the disaster he almost inflicted on us: his plan was to sign Amar'e AND Joe Johnson- that would have taken us right back to square one of being lumped with TWO unmovable contracts for years! We only got spared that because the Hawks offered him an even more ridiculous contract!
once again its on let the debate continue.

We have run out of topics, so we have to recycle old ones.
ITs been 15 years since we argued the 1966 draft pick!
Cazzie Russell was the no.1 pick. I think we should have traded it! Very weak draft!!!!!
Cazzie and Bradley were players of the year but as pro's they did not live up to the hype!

We almost had Amare and Joe Johnson in 2010.
this topic is old though....why bother?
Should we have insisted on protection on the picks we traded to Chicago for Curry? I don't think so, why would anyone do such a thing.

Plus One
Milos!, when is Milos coming??????
It appears to me that IT value is slowly increasing like Real Estate.
If we landed Lebron, this would never be a discussion.
Donnie Walsh was an unmitigated disaster as Knicks GM. He set the franchise back a long time.
Agree. Also the hiring of D'Antoni over MJax was a big mistake in my opinion. In Walsh's defense a lot of teams got caught up in the quest for cap space to get LBJ.
I started this thread because of today's NY Post article comparing the 2008 Knicks to now. So this thread is not out of the blue. Also, to all those saying threads revisiting the past are pointless, if you think its pointless, why comment on this thread? Most of you will be willing to jump into any thread vilifying Melo and Isiah. But when someone attacks Donnie Walsh you think the thread is pointless and crying over spilled milk. Why, cause he was polite?

If we gave Pat Riley what he wanted, the Knicks would have the 3 rings that the Heat currently have. I'm not playing the if game though.
Our biggest problem right now is Amare and his ridiculous contract and Donnie Walsh signed him to that after failing to land Lebon, Wade or Bosh. Donnie Walsh couldn't get a single one of them to come to NY. Pat Riley got all three of them for the Heat. Donnie Walsh sucked in NYC. He sucked.
The teams current situation reminds me of the horrors of last decade with Allan Houston.
One other thing about Walsh. He didn't do a great job in his year back with the Pacers. Every guy that was brought in under his watch has been moved out except for Mahini. Bringing in Augustine and Green were big mistakes.
Komives
and Bellamy for Debuschure??????
We paid too much!!!!!
Or did we?
There is a good saying - "Do not show half-done job to a fool"
Donne was half-way into his plan when Dolan scratched everything with panic run for Melo.
Walsh started with laughing joke of a team and almost get it to relevance... before Dolan put a hammer on it.
Some people are getting some comfort in finding escape-goats knowing that the problem we have (Dolan) is not fixable.

his full done jobs in Indiana didn't win any championships either.

you are just cranky cause I called out Donnie and not Melo. you aren't objective at all. you have never called out Donnie for signing Amare but gave Isaiah a lot of grief for Marbury. towel bury right? yah, that didn't get old. but when I blame Donnie for Amare, that's old news and all you have is wise cracks. nothing to add but garbage jokes. Amare still plays for nyc. I mean, didn't play but still gets paid cause of Donnie.

True... but he did a great job in Indiana and it was a solid team for long time, not a joke like Knicks.

Amare was signed just to get other big tickets to come to NY. He was the only thing available. And he played great for us before his body give up.
