I'm going with a dark-horse in the starting unit.
I think they may have promised JR an opportunity to start if he resigned and I think it may be time.
Woodson was quoted as saying "JR has to take another step forward" --- starting him could be one way you try to accomplish that.

Metta, Melo, Tyson, Ray and JR is a Damn Good starting line up.
Bargs, Amare, kmart all need to be used to keep everyone fresh. Woody had for to pay everyone.
Beno and Shump should get the majority of the minutes if the bench.
Everyone else not mentioned should get in there if needed and bring it in practice.
jr will never start!!!!!!!!! he is not starting ever in his career!!! he doesn't want to because he does work against the Second Unit

Knicks have to start Games with more firepower... Jr Smith should start. With Bargs, and Amare of the bench they need to be the focal point... makes sense if you gonna start Metta
If you're as inconsistent as JR, you have to come off the bench. Did you check out the rest of the starters? Aside from Tyson, we aren't exactly the NY Efficients. At least if you put Meta in, you get someone happy taking a back seat on offense but will still give it his all on both ends at all times. You know what you are getting there. Or you can give Bargs a shot, see if he can get his head into gear, defensively, and stretch the floor a little. If he can, I would put him in. If not, give it to Meta and have Bargs compete with Amar'e for minutes off the bench.
