Knicks · If Chris Smith makes this team (page 1)

BRIGGS @ 8/18/2013 12:00 PM
its a slap in the face to every decent worker anywhere in any job who earned their position. If he earned it--Im sure any one of us would be glad to have him here. But he has not come close to *earning* even a D league spot imho and we cannot afford to give away a roster spot for some kind of pre arranged deal that could jump back and bite the kNicks(and their paying fans) if the nBA gets involved.(remember the Timberwolves lost 3 first round picks because of a pre arranged deal and set back their franchise.
EnySpree @ 8/18/2013 12:13 PM
Yeah it would be pure bullshit. The kid sucks. He would struggle in pick up games at West 4th
yellowboy90 @ 8/18/2013 12:26 PM
I don't see this happening. There is no need for a 4th pg or 4th sg. The knicks are stacked at both positions. if he wants to hang out with his brother get him an office job. What he really should do is go over seas and build his stock.

Also, the way JR's contract is front loaded suggests that signing Chris is not in the plans. Also, the Knicks will have his bird rights in his opt out year so they hold all the leverage to him gette the biggest deal of his career.

IronWillGiroud @ 8/18/2013 12:37 PM
is this jr's brother?

don't worry, there is no way,

even dolan will draw a line at this lunacy

smackeddog @ 8/18/2013 12:50 PM
If this is based on the Zwerling article, bare in mind that he had an article earlier in the offseason citing a source that said their was absolutely no chance Chris Smith would make the team. So there you go- one source saying he will, one saying he absolutely won't.

Hopefully the latter is true- can't be wasting a spot signing a player who plays a position we don't need, and plays it badly!

You see this isn the corporate world all the time , a relative of a higher up just hanging on to boost the experience on a resume etc...

You make it sound like this is the 1st time the knicks hired a walk on as the 15th man. SMH

cronyism is a natural consequence of nepotism and there is no greater example of nepotism than dolan.

If truth be told --- probably +70% of so called "real people" get their job via some form of nepotism.
Often - the higher the position - the stronger the family/friend connection.

Transit Report Tells of Nepotism
By JAMES BARRON
November 19, 1991

A deputy vice president of the New York City Transit Authority intervened to see that friends and relatives were hired, the authority's Inspector General said yesterday.

The Inspector General, John S. Pritchard 3d, also found irregularities in the hiring practices of the Summer Transit Career Academy, which the deputy vice president, Carl Green, set up to make high school students aware of potential opportunities at the agency. Mr. Pritchard found that 13 of 16 academy jobs went to relatives of Transit Authority employees.

The report said that officials let some students into the program even though they did not meet admission rules that required them to have satisfactory grades, to complete a 250-word essay and to provide character references.

Briggs - Nepotism, and favoritism, is the way of the world. Or have you been paying attention?

Fortunately, sports is one of the few less affected fields of endeavor as results are measured more in statistics and productivity than family ties and old boy networks.

Why else was Jackie Robinson considered such a threat to the staus quo? Jackie challenged the myth of white superiority with one plate appearance. The owners and players were deathly afraid of losing their place in the segregated natural order of things. No more free rides for mediocre baseball players.

Briggs - you are a student of roster composition. When you get a minute, check the rosters from 1947-1965 and note how many black superstars peppered MLB lineups. Why? Because they HAD to be twice as good. Campy, Hank, Willie, Roberto were first generation. Think about that a moment.

If Chris Smith makes the roster it will because he outplayed someone. Not because Mike Woodson and Glen Grunwald conspired with or caved to his brother Earl.

wow i never thought to equate nepotism with the civil rights' struggle.

this isnt the volves situation, we overpaid for jr, we received no discount of any such thing.

we are even the only team in this boat, the pacers DRAFTED Psyhco T's brother, but of course no mention of a package deal.

there is no deal in place between these two.

Welcome to my world....Corporate America.....It happens all the time. I don't care if he makes it or now. He's just going to warm up the end of the bench. I personally think JR put something in his contract for his brother.

dk7th - nepotism, or favoritism, was NOT equated to the civil rights struggle. Nepotism, or favoritism... or personal bias ... are cited as somè of the root causes of forced segregation.

Jackie Robinson challenged the majority opinion that black people were inferior. That notion makes favoritism, or nepotism, easier to support, or enforce. Just an opinion.

Best five play. Best 12 make the roster.

just curious... cited by whom? again... segregation is a form of favoritism based on color-bias while nepotism is a form of favoritism based on family and friends.

jackie robinson was challenging the status quo in terms of color-bias not in terms of who white owners and white players knew personally. obviously baseball and by extension our society would have benefitted from the beginning by allowing blacks to play in the major leagues from the beginning. the game would have been better with gibson and foster and paige... to name a few greats.

in terms of an ideal we would all agree that sports-- and perhaps society as well-- would benefit from a transparent meritocracy, ie a fair way to promote those who by their personal merit should advance-- bearing in mind that they would in turn be obliged to aid those who were not as blessed with innate abilities or equal station.

the challenge is how to keep the balance between meritocracy and aristocracy and avoid the various forms of corruption that are always lurking.

in any event smith's brother, whether he plays a single second, will be there as a result of dolan's [lack of] character.

RonRon @ 8/18/2013 10:21 PM
misterearl, you can't be serious about Chris Smith "earning" a spot

#1 he is beyond horrible, what is his skill set?
#2 he doesn't fill a position/role we need
#3 he isn't a PG or SG

I would rather have Darko and many players over Chris Smith, even many scrubs

Nepotism, or favoritism... or personal bias are the symptoms of the degradation of modern society which dominated by bureaucrats.
Bureaucracy was progressive for a long time after replacing middle age aristocracy but became a huge determent to the progress of human race.
Bureaucrats of any kind, religious, government, business, military, tribal, unionized, etc. do not produce wealth but just consume it themselves and with their cronies and families.
The only way to move the progress forward is transition of technocrats to leading role in the society. And under technocrats I mean any people who produce wealth. Does not matter they are scientists, engineers, businessmen, workers, doctors, landscapers, etc. The society led by technocrats will promote meritocracy.

wasn't the plan to have an open competition at camp? I wouldn't be surprised if the 15th spot won the battle at training camp. I'm sure Chris Smith will be a part of that. I doubt Chris Smith gets signed. This is going to play out like Ewing Jr

FOR REAL, and on an even more frightening note, if this guy makes the team, what does that say about the level of talent the knicks were looking at adding to this team? jeez... the fact that he is around is a joke...

nykshaknbake @ 8/22/2013 10:28 AM
Chris Smith couldn't even play at an average quality in Summer league. There are 3 players from our SL team, forget about all the other names out there that should make an NBA team before Chris Smith.
