I was having a debate with friends who are BEGGING woody to start melo at the 3 so that his poor shoulder doesnt get hurt again when he was playing the 4.
i think putting melo at the 4 was a brilliant move by woody since he SUCKS perimeter defense against wings. instead of chasing them around, he lazily switches and then gets outmatched on the perimeter. id rather him stay down low at the 4 and HIDE his lack of perimeter defense/effort
what do you all think?
It doesn't matter since he is played by 3s defensively most of the time. Defensively I don't have a problem with him on the wing. He is an avg defender.
He looked really thin at his camp. Not sure but I have been wondering if he is slimming down to play the three.

Not only did Melo still do that at the 4 but pretty much the entire team switched on everything.
i think melo should stay put at the 4...less running around for him..team had a lot of success with him playing the 4
It's going to be tough to keep him at either position for long stretches..
you have a lot of guys on this team that can play 2 positions effectively. Novak, copeland, and kidd couldn't really play other positions and have an honest imapact.. kidd to slow to play pg, novak at 6 10" was to weak to play the 4 or 5 position, and copelands IQ is just to low to play anything other the the 4..
In comes metta,BU, and AB..guys who can make mid range jumpers, and size to at least give a much better effort defensively..

The guy was second team all nba and led the league in scoring. I don't think you will see much of a reduction in his minutes. Hopefully his minutes are handled so that he doesn't wear down. Also, maybe having Artest/Kmart keeps a punk like D12 away from trying to end his season.
I think Melo should be at the 3 so that we can play Felton, Shump, Melo, Bargs and Tyson. I think that is a strong lineup to start with. Who knows what Woody will decide for the SL, but I think this is a good SL for this team. It's a more standard lineup that I think allows this team to match up well against any of the top teams in the league. Great size and overall skill.

+1
Then Bargs to the bench for Artest, and move CA to the 4.

your going to put mwp in b4 jr, knowing how effective we were playing small ball,

If Melo can't get in top shape to play the 3 then we should trade him because he sure as hell can't play the 4 defend and rebound

when has Melo EVER had a problem playing the 3 which, is his natural position. He has had his best years playing the 3 and his weight was never an issue at the time. In fact, he's smaller now than when he used to play the 3.

what are you talking about, posters have made it clear that Melo is pushing at least 245 lbs and is probably around 260 lbs.

yup, just like they made it clear before last season that Felton was a fat slob. Bunch of haters, fake New Yorkers with their overly pessimistic attitudes. That's not New York. I'm a native New Yorker, born and bred and this soft, emotional new breed of Man is an embarrassment (imo)
Strange, Melo doesn't look 260!

Dam Basketball-Reference has been lying to me about his weight all these years!
Saying he's 230lbs for the longest, when Melo is really a fat 300 lb pig.
Melo is a 3, that excess pounding that he takes wears on him and proved costly in playoffs. Besides he is one of the worst shooting PFs in the league and rebounder.

God now i really dont want him playing the 4

+1 That's about as spot on as you can get, Blint.
I never understood when incessant whining about your own team became the hallmark of being a good "fan". Must have been a cultural backlash against facepainters.
I wonder what most of these tough, gritty, realist fan posters would sound like in a room with Spike.
I'm agree he should play the 3 even if he can't keep up with quicker SF's at least he can stay healthy. It's ok to have one mediocre defender on the court as long as your pg SG and center can cover his difficiences. Unfortunately we have Felton
This is simply NOT a defensive team. They can play defense, but they aren't built to be a dominant defensive team. This is an Offensive team and they actually bolstered their strength so that they are more versatile and potent on offense. That said I fully expect they'll be a better defensive team than they were last year which is a good thing. Being stronger with a couple more defenders, younger and faster overall I see this team being better defensively but even more potent offensively.
It really doesn't matter if Melo is called a SF or PF. He's gonna score either way. Defensively Melo shouldn't be in a situation where he has to chase quick SF's all day. That's not how the Knicks defend and I wouldn't expect that to change. They're gonna switch and even if that's not the best defense, it does solve the issue of Melo having to chase SF's all around the court. Our guards are very strong and able to guard SF's with no problem.
What Sfs are people worrying about?
