Knicks · Any chance in heck... (page 1)

...that is to say and chance in HELL that Melo might re-up for less so the Knicks can have more cash for more and other quality players to run with him (instead of just supporting him).

The big douchy three in Miami did it, but Duncan did it well before so the Spurs could remain competitive.

AND if he did, how would the overall opinion of the forum change regarding Mr. Anthony? Getting the big bucks standard, but folks sure like to vilify those that are able to get it. He's carrying the team, but I don't think that was his goal when he came here.

Anyway, just a thought...oh, I wonder what's in these alba threads?

yellowboy90 @ 9/4/2013 2:10 PM
The big 3 took a couple million less in a tax friendly state. People want Melo to take 8-10 million less.

A interesting proposal from Larry Coon would be for Melo to do a 1 yr deal then resign during the year for the max. It want happen but that would work in a perfect world.

grillco @ 9/4/2013 2:20 PM
I wish some guy would take the "hit" for this team. I mean we're talking about making almost 20 million or more than 20 million. Twenty million EFFIN' dollars. Gimme a 10th of that and I'll be set (still working of course, but with no debt, a new house, college $$$ for the kids, and a fat bank account).

Imagine a player that would take a significant discount to play in NY. I kind of can't. Jeter did, but because he was out-dueled by that twit Cashman (who played a slump stretch clearly based on the 3,000 hit stress perfectly).

I always want these guys to be more and better than they are in various ways. And nope, I'm not perfect.

I guess that depends what you think the max Melo would demand. What's the mark after Melo takes 10 less?

hopefully both the knicks and the league eventually catch up and drive down his value to what it should be. that would be an ideal outcome. his actual value at this point is really closer to the 13-14 million range.

why would he do that? he had a chance to sign as a free agent and come in with a young stocked team and picks... he didn't want to do that.... why would he take less money now?

Yup. Not in his nature.

No one knew what the new CBA would be.

If your agent said the downside of the new CBA could be max $ at $12M for 3 years with raises versus what they had in place - $65M over 3 year extension - what would you do?

smackeddog @ 9/4/2013 3:48 PM
I've grown to quite like Melo, but I wouldn't cry if we didn't resign him- under the new cba his max contract would be an absolute killer, especially at his age.

Based on my posts I'm talking about taking one for the team and in this case taking one for the team would not really be a hit. He'll still likely make another $100 million over the rest of career from NBA contracts alone. So taking less would show how committed he is to winning in New York. It would increase any positive public perception of him tenfold and make a lot his detractors rethink their stance (probably getting a lot of them to become actual supporters/fans).

Again, it's just something I'd like to see. Without it I don't think the Knicks are as likely to win a chip with Melo on the team. And this is a shame as I like him as a player and would like to see him succeed at the highest level in the NBA, ESPECIALLY for the Knicks.

Part of the problem would be the lack of available players to pair or trio with him. If CP and the like were actually available, it would have to give him pause. Without those types of options on the horizon I don't think it will happen eiother, but that's not just greed, but short-sightedness.

As such I just wondered what the board thought about the chances of Melo looking at the big picture and doing what's best for his team (and likely his career). Rings make any athlete's career, much more than endless $$$. I guess that's just a fans perspective though. But I truly doubt Jeter would trade his four other rings for all the cash A-Rod made.

Oh, why you'd fire your agent, speak directly to both team GM's and ensure that the team you wanted to come home to would keep all their yoots (specially that hansome Italian boy) and all their draft picks and you'd sign for the league minimum.

Then you'd join the team quietly and take a mentor's role, you'd stop smiling so much and being such an effing league cancer. And you'd look to become the next Knick point forward of the future, the one that Anthony Mason never became. You'd spend all your time watching old Celtic vids from the 50's and 60's and imagine how you'd be so fulfilled turning Gallo and the Mayor into the next Heinsohn and Havlicek...you'd want to play basketball the right way, the team way, the Knicks being GREAT way, Gawddammit!

that is a load of BS. Everyone with a brain knew Denver was NOT going to let him walk and get nothing in return like LeBron did with Cleveland. He would have been traded (likely to the Nets) and would have signed that extension like he did with us netting him the $$'s he wanted. As far as accepting less when the time comes, that is something that management needs

Vmart @ 9/5/2013 11:02 AM
I have no problem with Melo's contract. I have problems with Amare and Chandler's contract. There is no way Chandler is worth his contract at best he is a 7-8 mill player. Amare has pretty much seen his last big contract, he should come at very low rates.

It's funny how everyone is calling for Melo to lower his salary, when he is the only producer on the team.

people are constantly harping on Melo but, Amare has been stealing money since the end of his 1st season.

Shhhhhhhhh, the playoffs, Division champs, second round, scoring champ, 13 game win streaks, it's all fool's gold! We'd have at least 1 chip now if it weren't for trading away all that young potential for this iso, non-rebounding, non-defending, non-passing black hole.

It's just a mirage for idiots who line Dolan's pockets by following the Knicks, instead of relocating to Denver, err I mean San Antonio, errr I mean Indiana...and following a real team that plays the right way!

Suckers!

I know, and I think people are unfair when they demonise players for not taking less. They're not guaranteed to win a championship if they take less, just an increase chance (and the odds are still against them)- they're most likely to end up with less money AND no championship. Don't blame them at all, really, for going for as much as they can get. Still, it's a shame sometimes- I wonder if players like Ben Gordon ever look back and wished he'd taken less and stayed with the Bulls. He was a clutch player who thrived under pressure- it's been a shame watching him waste away with Detroit and Charlotte. Waste of a career (but he got paid handsomely for it).

callmened @ 9/5/2013 4:35 PM
Ben Gordon ("Benji") is a personal friend of mine. The knicks are his favorite team and TRUST me he gladly play for them if he was PAID. its a business and he wants the most money for he and his family. These guys dont go nuts after teams like we do, they play for the love of the game (where ever theyre located) and the money...not for anyone particular team
bernard @ 9/5/2013 4:51 PM
I think there is some negotiating room between the max we can resign him for vs. the max a new team can pay. We can still be the top bidder without paying the absolute max allowed by the CBA.

All that said, I'm on the side of the players here. If I were in their shoes, I'd get what I could, or maybe sacrifice a little to be in a place I wanna be. But no way would I sacrifice a whole lot. Seriously, would an owner be more loyal to me? If I, as a player, got injured in a contract year, would I reasonably expect my owner to resign me to reward my good play beforehand?

Like others have said, it's a business.

Genuine question, what would you personally prefer: win a championship or $10-20mil?
