Genuine question, what would you personally prefer: win a championship or $10-20mil?
Would it be possible to sign him to a 1yr 35mil contract for next season with the goal of him signing a cheaper contract the yr after that? Or would it be possible for him to sign a 1 yr deal at like 15mil in 2015 to sign 2 other big time free agents and then give him a longer term contract the yr after?

Melo gonna have to decide if his focus is $ of championships. He already got $100+M in contracts over his career and there would be a big different in personal between him taking $15M, $20M and $25 to stay.
Knicks also have the option to move past Melo if their goal is 2+ allstars and a stronger team all around then a high paid Melo and whatever else they can get.
The precedent has already been set by LeBron, Wade, Bosh to take a LOT less money than they could have.
I think Rondo, Melo, Love would be a huge haul and a very possible one.

I want to say that there is a big difference between guys like Ben Gordon and those that make max money and are on their second max contracts. The later have a bit more flexibility.

Fair question. And if there was a direct relationship between taking less and getting a specific player who I like and who I think dramatically improves my chances of getting the ring, then I probably do it (depending on how much $ I have to sacrifice -- $10-$20mm/year is probably too big a hit; $10-$20mm for the life of a contract is probably doable). However, if it's a matter of taking less to give the boss flexibility to hire on some unnamed guy who there's no guarantee I want to play with or who I think improves my chances at the ring, then I wouldn't sacrifice.

I guess it's really about risk and reward. He's not heading to the poor house even if he quartered his salary, so taking a 25% cut wouldn't really be too big a deal unless he, Lala, and their financial people are all idiots. Plus NY is HUGE endorsement money. And that's in general, bring a chip and that increases exponentially.
So if he takes a few mill less (whatever amount affords some real flexibility...which is also a massive factor) on the gamble of winning a ring and cementing the HoF and its related glory, you more than make up for any "loss" of money in bigger and better and MORE endorsements.
I know we're looking a global now as well. So if you factor in what it would take to get the chip...it means taking out the Heat. Obviously that means besting the superstar of the league, the self appointed king. If you're leading the team that does that you're the new King, even if only for a season.
I'm just sayin'...
We will see what he is made of. I am indifferent in regards to Melo. I don't hate him or love him but if he feels the need to break the bank to stay here I never ever want to hear him talk about how important a championship is to him again

Even Jeremy Lin, who was everyone's sweetheart, took the money and left for a tax free state so he could maximize salary. Let's face it, nobody is taking a paycut in NY. Maybe in a tax free state, sure. But not here... We're at a disadvantage because the NY taxes are among the worst in the nation. I would be in favor of the next CBA taking into account state tax for making a level playing field. It's a little ridiculous that it doesn't.

well, right now considering my financial needs, I'd have to take the money and run. I was going to add IF I were an NBA player I would want to championship yet, it's not like rich folk can't run into financial difficulties too. Especially if there aren't good at managing their funds.
Its all on Management. They need to sell him on the idea....which is more likely than a player volunteering to give up money. Like, who they are trying to get with that money. If I were Melo, I wouldn't even consider it unless I knew who they were going after. Not giving up my max money for a Kobe or Wade (not that such a scenario is likely or possible)

If getting a round or 2 of playoff ticket sales are the goal, Jimmy will be gladly re-up him at $25-$30m and we will be the Atlanta Hawks
