Like some people have already said, the numbers are eyewatering:
2015-16: $24.141 million
2016-17: $25.825 million
2017-18: $27.509 million
2018-19: $29.193 million
I just don't think we can afford to do that under this cba. His agents obviously playing hardball with all of this 'Melo would leave to join a contender for less money' (hmm- strange how he didn't do that with us a few years a go)- unfortunately Mills will likely fall for the ploy. It's real tough decision- do you risk losing him for nothing and ending up with no one or do you sign him in the hope he lures another big FA (again no guarantee- you could just be left with him and his huge contract).
I hope he doesn't opt out as that buys us a bit bore time, and gives us a better idea of what FA's are available in 2015.
is trading him an impossibility?
This is why I would've traded him to Minnesota last year for Derrick Williams, ridnour and their 1st rd picks

Last season, the Knicks captured the Atlantic Division crown for the first time since 1994; they notched over 50 wins for the first time since 1997. Prior to last April, the Knicks hadn’t won a playoff series since Bill Clinton was in office.
The primary driving force behind the Knicks’ desperately-desired recent prosperity has been Carmelo Anthony.
Anthony, the league’s reigning scoring champion, is the only player in franchise history to average at least 26 points, six rebounds and three assists per game in a season. Last year, Anthony became the first player in a decade – and just the eighth player in NBA history – to average at least 28.5 points per game, yet fewer than 2.7 turnovers in the same season.Read more at http://www.hoopsworld.com/is-maxing-out-carmelo-anthony-a-mistake#dtkHAkW7WK7SOQFo.99
this type of writing is what has people fooled.. it is fools gold... The knicks captured the Atlantic division moreso because the celtics got old and injured fast and the atlantic was pretty weak.... This team had guys that overachieved early and then made a late run at the end of the season, but it didn't result in playoff success....
Those salary figures are just ugly.. Knicks should not make decisions out of fear... They should make the right decision... and giving this guy this kind of money is idiotic... A different direction would be a ballsy yet smart thing to do... the problem is, that takes a smart front office and that is where we fail miserably..

If we're trading Melo I would hope we could do better than Derrick freaking Williams. Glad some of you guys aren't the GM.

No offense gunsewing, but I think I'd have even less faith in you as GM than I do in Mills!
Yeah, I'd like to have their picks but we should get something better than Derick Williams

How often do you get back a player of equal value? Certainly not for a one dimensional scorer like Melo. Derrick Williams is not that far off from gallo
It's about the 1st rd picks and cap flexibilty to add star two way multidimensional players. That combination gets you out of the 1st or 2nd rd.
Max contracts to flawed "stars" surrounded by an aarp squad does not
Look at Indiana, Chicago, Miami San Antonio, okc etc

Yea, I don't know much about Derrick williams, he seems very athletic, and capable of being a pretty good scorer.. if he can actually play some good defense then pretty much that is all you would need from that SF spot... the picks would be great as well... it gives you options for sure..
Not sure what most would consider equal value for carmelo as I think he is vastly overrated by most... and we all know we are not getting the type of package we gave up to get him..

dude he's a top ten player, an elite max cat. he's been to the playoffs every year, won the scoring title, is an ncaa champion and he was born in red hook.
of COURSE we can get into a trade where we get the same value we sent packing back in february 2011. there is bound to be a trade partner out there who understands melo's greatness.
Papabear Says
I have an announcement to make
Melo ain't going anywhere but to the New York Knicks
he is here till he retires. Dolan loves him. Let's hope he has a great season. Hope all the Knicks have a great season.

Wilson (bench player/injury prone)
Gallo (role player/injury prone)
Moz (bum)
2014 1st round pick
I hope not....

You're fired as GM.
I rather stock like lottery picks than pay Melo $29mil per and surround him with AARP and NBDL players
gunsnewing wrote:I rather stock like lottery picks than pay Melo $29mil per and surround him with AARP and NBDL players
In all fairness, you didn't say how many picks. I'm not interested in the players you listed, though. And A Melo-Love pairing would be good enough that we wouldn't be getting any high or mid lottery picks.
Lottery pick in this years deep draft and and 1 or 2 future 1st rd picks would be enough for me. Derrick Williams, ridnour and another substantial contract for the trade to clear
Why wait til 2015. Get a head start now and in 2015 you will have all the cap space in the world to add multiple talent and your own developed talent
I wouldn't be surprised if Mills trades Melo soon. It would be gansta but he will have earned my respect
I agree with the philosophy. Melo's trade value is probably quite high since he had such a high PPG season and the team won a lot of games. I just am less interested in the picks than you and I want better players than what you listed.
Why? It's about 2015. What is a slightly better player going to do? Get us the 9th seed
