Tyson was terrible in the playoffs last year. I think anyone with eyes agrees with that. Was that because he was hurt? I assume so. Smack's stat lines are pretty compelling. As is the fact that he was the DPOY just a year earlier and made the Knicks jump from atrocious defensively to middle of the pack.
So, the big questions are: is he healthy now? And if so, can he stay healthy?
Normally, I'd expect the Tyson/Hibbert match-up to be pretty even. Tyson's more athletic, moves better. Hibbert is bigger and stronger and has some low-post moves.
Apart from that, I don't really want Tyson shooting more than 1 or 2 jumpers a game. I'm perfectly happy with him shooting layups, follow-ups and alley-oop dunks and scoring 12 ppg on 65% shooting. Incredibly efficient. We have plenty of other options to run our sets for. I don't know why everyone is so fixated on his offensive deficiencies. I like a player who knows what he does well and sticks to that, particularly when they're really good at what they do well.

Still chicken legs and still going to get muscled by Hibbert.
Can we stop with the revisionist history. I know Hibbert is the flavor of the month since the refs changed the way the game is called to cater for him in the playoffs, but Tyson has always been able to handle him in the regular season, when not ill and broken down.
Tyson vs Hibbert 2012-13: Tyson- 12.7pts 11.7 reb The Mighty Hibbert- 5.5ps 6.3rebs
Tyson vs Hibbert 2011-12: Tyson- 12pts 10rebs The Mighty Hibbert- 12.7pts 6rebs
But of course in true knick fan style, just focus on when Tyson played at his worst, ignore the context, and pretend that that is all he is capable of being...
You didn't watch the playoffs last year.

I agree. It's not like this team was bad offensively

You're 100% right there. It was sickening to watch that almost every game last year and hopefully Artest (I know it seems crazy) will bring some accountibility in terms of just playing hard.
I cannot see Tyson playing the limited minutes suggested (28/29) simply because he will be needed against the bigger teams - Indy, BK, Chi, Det, Clev, etc... (and that's just the East)
If Aldrich is kept, that extra 20 min at C, most likely spent between he and KMart, is not realisitic because of whoever is complimenting them at the 4 will likely need alot of help - whether it's Melo, Artest, Amar'e or Bargs. KMart is a great defender, but can anyone really see him battling Andre Drummond and leaving to help whoever is on Monroe/JSmith with great success? Would love to be wrong here, but I just think about what David West did last year and cringe.
This is why I see Chandler having to continue to play heavy minutes, otherwise most games will turn into a nightmare on the boards and pts in the paint.
Dallas won a championship playing Tyson 27 minutes. The guy is 31 years old and his body cannot handle 82 games 33+ minutes then playoffs. Its more like 75 games 27-28 minutes avg and then move the load up in the playoffs to 32-34. Just like we cant rely on Carmelo to cover the offensive load the distribution of rebounds must be there as well. Anthony will get his its up to Bargs Martin Aldrich Artest Shumpert Smith and PGs to get theirs.
Not disagreeing at all about him needing to play less minutes. That was my concern for him last year as well after he played in the Olympics.
That Mavs team had both Mahinmi and Haywood backing him up, who were both pretty solid backup Cs. As of now, we only have KMart and maybe Cole. I think the Knicks failed again to address the backup C and will again force Tyson into a heavier workload that hopefully doesn't wear him down by June.
Not a diss on KMart, love the dude, but it's just gonna be tough sledding against certain teams considering the guys we have at the 4.

We can use Bargnani Amare Kenyon Aldrich Tyler all at 5 in different line ups or if Tyson is hurt. Because Anthony can play 4--although I agree if we use him to start season at 3--we should have the depth to keep Tyson at good minutes.
12 deep + 3
Tyson Bargs Anthony Shumpert Felton
Martin Amare Artest Hardaway JR Udirih
Aldrich Prigioni
IR JR Smith Jeremy Tyler
D League CJ Leslie
Obviously Amare may not start season either but we can shift in Aldrich and play Anthony minutes at 4. Id like to give the last spot to the player who earns it out of Leslie and Murry. Tyler is a keeper.

Honestly think Tyson would have gotten a pass because while he played horribly he was hurt. When he came out and criticized his team in the media and did not take any responsibility for his own play it changed my opinion of him as a player and a teammate. Its hard for me not to think about those words and picture him getting dominated by Hibbert whenever he is brought up. Leaders lead from the front.
playa2@ 10/5/2013 12:25 PM
I didn't think Tyson had to explain his poor play against Hibbert, his poor game spoke for itself.
Didn't everyone acknowledge that he lost weight and was getting over from being ill ? Hibbert is the biggest starting center in the NBA right ?

I agree that he gets the benefit of the doubt but he trashed his team and didn't take responsibility for his part in the loss to Indiana at the time.

The "Godfather" AL Horford. What an underrated player. Hibbert only had one game in double digits for rebounding against a 6'10 245-255 lbs center. Amazing.

I'll believe his j when I see it. What we need from Tyson is consistent defense and rebounding.

This is the reason we haven't seen him shoot the rock ( consistent defense and rebounding)

You can say he trashed his teammates , but I believe he spoke for some of the lesser salaried ,players on the team (Shumpert-Pablo ). Now if Kidd would have made those comments, many may have said he had some validity to what he said.

Kidd led on the floor and in the locker room. He certainly wouldn't have come out after shooting 12% and said to the media the things Tyson said and not taken ownership for his part in the team losing.

"Obviously, I wasn't close to myself, but I can't even look at that. I have to look at it as motivation where I got my ass kicked, and next time I'm not going to let that happen," Chandler said after practice Friday in Greenburgh. "Honestly, my motivation this summer was the playoff exit. I vowed to myself that I would never let that happen again. I would never let my team down and be in that situation again. That's what I've been thriving off of. I will never allow that to happen. That's been my motivation."

this is encouraging, it shows he has something in his mind that is pushing him to improvement.
you know it's not that he just got muscled,
if you go back to the game threads of the playoff series, you will see that many posters made observation that tyson just looked out of it, i think i said that he was either "high on pot or throwing the game",
so it was just bad all over, and he didn't help by adding salt to the wound.
but now if he is saying this, this shows that there could be something redeemable in him,
i'll pull for you tyson, but you have to really show us something this year in the playoffs big bro!
