Knicks · No Leaders? Metta World Wisdom Knows Basketball (page 1)

"I don't really care about being physical. Smart. Just be intelligent. The physical part of the game will take care of itself. I know a lot of smart teams that won championships. Obviously, sometimes the smart thing to do is be physical. That will come.

"I know New York fans love the old physical teams; New York is a physical place. But New York don't have a championship in the last how many years? 1973. It's about time we become intelligent. It's about time we changed that.

"I'm not big on talent. It's hard work and fundamentals. I could care less about talent. ... I know a lot teams that worked hard that lost. I know a lot of teams that had talent that lost. So you want to kind of make sure you are out there being intelligent and working hard, and I think that will get us over the top."

- Ron (Metta World Peace) Artest

This is who Andrea Bargnani will answer to in the locker room. This is who Carmelo will be aware of on the court when they share a shiftline. This is who will talk to JR Smith, along with Mike Woodson, about growing up.

You do the math.

It's true that mwp is our best pick up

Nothing fugazy about this guy

callmened @ 10/4/2013 8:04 AM
I agree. I think Artest has grown up and has been thru some battles thru the yrs. I think he's our leader!

he may have grown up some but he still has a screw loose as he well knows. this is msg, where the culture is one of dysfunction and high-functioning and malignant narcissism. under these circumstances i would not be surprised if artest acts like a divining rod of sorts for this dysfunction and illness, drawn to it instead of putting up resistance.

This comment of his is suspect..

"I'm not big on talent. It's hard work and fundamentals. I could care less about talent. ... I know a lot teams that worked hard that lost. I know a lot of teams that had talent that lost. So you want to kind of make sure you are out there being intelligent and working hard, and I think that will get us over the top

ok, so what about those teams that have the talent and work hard and have fundamentals? either way all of those things are needed, but those with the most talent usually win, when you factor everything else in..

He often talks in circles, he is at the end of his career, half the player he used to be... All of this talk is fine, but we all know it has to play out on the court.. This team, this environment is the perfect mix for one dysfunctional mess... When artest attempts to become the voice of reason, I tend to take that with a grain of salt... This is the same guy that can't control his emotions or ridiculous actions..

remember this?

and this is not that long ago.. as I said, this guy is a mixed bag of nuts.. listening to him try to be the voice of reason is hilarious..

sealy @ 10/4/2013 11:56 AM
He is obviously insane, but I don't think anyone could ever legitimately say he is a cancer on a roster. Agreed he is not the same player like he was 10 yrs ago but, after slimming himself down a bit, looked pretty solid last year.

Also think people should realize he wants the leadership role and wants to represent his hometown and imo that alone will remove alot of the silly BS he has done on the court.

My favorite addition to this team by far.

EnySpree @ 10/4/2013 12:01 PM
people think im a nice guy but don't know me from my days in the gun running business with Samcro on the west coast.....

people change....you live and learn. Dude has been a very good basketball player and teammate throughout his career. Right now he is the old vet. Things done changed

THE Difference is we know artest history, it is no secret... people do change, however, changing doesn't make them suitable leaders either... what I think Artest has learned is that the more skill you lose the more your game declines the less teams put up with your BS.... At least he learned that, but not for one minute would I say I trust this dude...

People without hope are hopeless.

Basketball is fun. Highlighting the warts and flaws on full blast does nothing for the enjoyment of the Answer Man. It is a game.

A championship would be sweet. Until the day after, when the same kvetching over coaching and roster moves kicks in.

Keep hope alive.

Do you feel the Knicks team has warts and flaws?

misterearl @ 10/4/2013 2:05 PM
The Answer Man Meets Cartman Halfway

Q. Cartman - Do you feel the Knicks team has warts and flaws?

A. Absolutely

The head coach admits he played Jason Kidd (15% shooting) too much in the playoffs. Our leading man is a self-absorbed, tat-wearing ghetto fabulous prima donna, we just picked up a former number one who is a bust, our other 100M bonus baby is fatally flawed with a game based on vertical jump of which he has none left, our center has the flu, we have no backup center, our lead guard is too pudgy, our other guards are WAY too shy, our most athletic guard has never played a full healthy season and our 13 new guys are barely acquainted.

Did I mention Ron Artest, JR Smith AND Kenyon Martin are ALL crazy?

Other than that, we are perfect.

Seriously Cartman, every team has warts and flaws. They are only humans. The beauty is watching the bright moments when the dominoes fall info place and the extra pass is made or there is a steal in the open court, that leads to a dunk. There is an exhibition game in Baltimore and The Answer Man will be there with a crab cake sammich.

Enjoy the new ride.

nixluva @ 10/4/2013 4:24 PM
RODMAN!!!

I think it's OK sometimes to have a little crazy on your team. The team has enough straight laced guys that they can deal with a bit of a wild card. Teams have been able to win with a crazy guy in the mix.

uhhh... no

artest is a hothead
smith is a hothead
chandler is a hothead
martin is a hothead
felton is easily flustered
melo complains too much

you need ballast on a team with this many "personalities," somebody who has poise, composure, and is unflappable. last year it was kidd, and prigioni rarely if ever lost it. felton likes to out his hands on his hips and pout, sometimes he walks away from the refs too fast as a form of protestation too.

i am all for playing with passion and intensity but not if it causes you to unravel.

Vmart @ 10/4/2013 4:42 PM
I personally think people throw the word leadership out like it means something, leaders there are plenty almost every team has one on their team. Find me a player with leadership and will. The player that wills his team to take it to a higher level of play. The player that commands the respect of his team.

How often did we watch Pat Ewing carry the Knicks. Bernard King take a bunch of backups to a higher level. That's the leadership/will player the Knicks are lacking.

Ron is older but he knows how to play and get into guys heads. I still have fond memories of his guarding Kobe when he was a Rocket.
