Kenyon Martin's lingering ankle injury will keep him out of Monday's preseason game against the Raptors. It may also keep him out of the Knicks' season opener.
Martin suffered an ankle injury late last season but returned to play in every playoff game for the Knicks.
But the injury is still bothering Martin, according to Mike Woodson.
"His knees are fine. He feels great there. It's just, he’s nursing his ankle," Woodson said after Saturday's practice.
The fact that Martin is still hurt six months after his original ankle sprain is troubling for the 13-year veteran, and for the Knicks.
He's missed the first four preseason games already. Woodson said Martin may scrimmage with the Knicks during their two-game, three-day road trip next week.
"That’s our hope," the coach said. "We’ll see how all this plays out."
Martin's status for the season opener is questionable at this point, according to Woodson.
"And if he is around, I don't know how much he'll even play," Woodson said.
Woodson wants to see the 36-year-old forward scrimmage before playing him in a game.
Martin has missed multiple practices during training camp and the preseason. The Knicks said they were "preserving" the veteran forward, whom they re-signed to a one-year contract for the veteran's minimum in the off season.
Josh Powell would be better suited to do just that, more than Ike Diogu.

My opinion Diogu is simply the better talent. We lack in rebounding and if Amare cant play--we dont have ANY inside scoring. Id rather have the bruiser who can score and rebound who can IMHO put up a few 20-10 games if given the time. Our team is built on scoring first but we need inside scoring to open up the outside. Powell hasnt shown he can score anywhere near Ike D. Powell has been given a great chance and hes played fair at best--Ike has earned the spot like Murry
The team that makes the last stop in a high scoring game wins.
Powell showed us with all the prima donnas we have offensivelyshooting the rock(one way players), we need an anchor on the defensive side that knows how to alter and defend with help defense. Too many times guys break us down and make it uncontested to the rim...see Lance Stephenson

At 6'7" dude could play some 3 too... He's a legit offensive NBA wing. Murry's not. Not yet. Can he get there? I dunno. Maybe, maybe not. I don't think Murry's ever gonna be a guy a team can count on to go out there and drop 20+ consistently against anyone. That's CDR's game...And at 26 years old, CDR's still young enough where he would be a welcome addition now AND a piece we could keep if and when we ever had to turn over the roster.. Woody sees this different though I guess.

Most definitely not the reason. I think Woody liked the kid Murry right from SL and convinced him to come to training camp for the Knicks when he had other opportunities (Miami for one). He probably now wants to reward that loyalty...And that's OK...Plus Murry has earned a spot to be fair---he played well in SL and has looked even better in pre-season so far....I like Murry and I'd be OK with us taking him. I just feel CDR is a little bigger and better...And that's not a knock against Murry. I just really like CDR's talent level---always have. His ability to score the ball is a legit weapon and something that could come in handy if one of our primary scorers ever went down...This is a guy that can go out there and drop 30 on Lebron/Wade and co. He's done it before...Can Murry put up that kind of game against the King & Dwayne Wade? I dunno. Maybe. To me, the more scorers the better. The #1 objective in basketball is to outscore the opponent. The more scorers we have at the ready, the easier that objective becomes. Having said that -- Murry does supply something similar & is probably an even better defender (still needs growth in all areas but as is, the kid looks like he has a nice well-rounded game with very few holes). Can't go wrong either way I suppose...I think unless somebody unexpectedly plays well or bad these last few games, the last 3 will be Tyler, Diogu and Murry. And that's cool. I'm fine with that...That's a very decent last 3...I've just been wondering out loud WHY CDR hasn't gotten a legit look yet.. It'd be nice to have Berman, Iannazzone, Begley or one of these guys ask Woody about this...I'd like an answer.. Nothing about that comment was backhanded....He meant that as a compliment 100%. Woody even marveled at his ability to score the ball...Then he lays an egg by not playing the guy up to this point. It's weird, man, all I'm sayin'. And CDR ain't some bad defender like some are suggesting btw. I agree Murry might be the better overall defender (and I emphasize 'might' -- to me there's still a lot of uncertainty surrounding Murry due to inexperience and a lack of any standout production from him in the past, either in college or the NBDL. Plus, Murry gambles a lot on D) but make no mistake - CDR can play defense.
Looks like Bargs AND Shump might be questionable for tonight's game in Toronto. That's a primary scorer and the starting SG, most likely both out. And JR Smith's out...Play CDR 30+ mins. tonight against DeRozan and let's see..
