A couple years into retirement, players like JR are the reason the NBA encourages players to plan out their financial futures. Doesn't matter if a guy like JR makes 6 million or 10 million a year, he's going to find a way to spend it all as soon as possible. That's why when players like him try to use the "I need a living for my future" argument it holds no water for GM's.
