Knicks · "Woody’s hands are tied," said one Knick. "It’s a joke." (page 1)

Mike Woodson is a good Head Coach stuck in a soap opera

According to one player, the team thinks the entire concept (of rationing Stoudemire's minutes) is counterproductive and another example of nonbasketball people — Dolan and Callahan — stepping on Woodson’s toes.

Lisa Callahan, MD.

That's a player giving an anti-management quote to Frank Isola. Somewhere, James Dolan wonders aloud if he can trade everyone on the Knicks just to make sure that anonymous player gets what he deserves. Anyway, this follows Martin and Stoudemire grumbling about the minutes restrictions themselves. It's tough. Amar'e in particular has been little help in his short stints. The question then is whether increased minutes (perhaps alongside better defenders...like Martin! That pairing had a nice stint at the beginning of the fourth quarter against Atlanta) would help Amar'e shake off rust and make himself useful, or just compound the problem.
-Seth Rosenthal

The question of latitude is what makes any discussion of high-profile replacement coaches moot.

How can anyone be a "yes man" and garner respect from veterans?

StarksEwing1 @ 11/18/2013 4:12 PM
I dont totally blame woodson. I do blame a lot of our owner. Dolan keeps trying to play GM and always makes terrible moves that really hurt this. Teams like the Spurs Pacers and Bulls are teams we shoudl try and follow. Besides Rose they have any superstars anymore. Great defensive teams and great depth
gunsnewing @ 11/18/2013 4:41 PM
I'm getting the feeling whether warranted or not Woodson will be fired and Karl will be hired. Melo keeps saying the Knicks aren't playing hard which is an inditement on the coach

Melo had success under Karl, JR and Kmart as well. If we are not going to defend we might as well play good team ba on offense and excel at something

misterearl @ 11/18/2013 4:43 PM
Gumsmewimg - is George Karl the best you can come up with?

Why would anyone, who has (is dealing) dealt with the stress of cancer, want the stress of James Dolan?

Mark Jackson or no one

Then again, Golden State is a joy to watch. Mark may never leave.

anrst @ 11/18/2013 4:47 PM
karl is a first-class mosochist. he'd relish the idea of being tortured by dolan, and we'd all be better off for it. the man can coach. get it done.
CrushAlot @ 11/18/2013 5:06 PM
Not sure how Isola got a quote from anyone.
JamesKPolk @ 11/18/2013 5:38 PM
Ths is true but it doesn't change the fact that Woodson (once a Saint on this forum) sucks.
misterearl @ 11/18/2013 6:35 PM
JamesKPolk - Mike Woodson was never EVER described as a saint anywhere on the board.

He is just a man. If the quote is factorial, the morale on this roster is the first thing that needs to be addressed.

For you to dumb it down by saying Woodson sucks, is an insult to writers who invest serious thought before sharing basketball opinion. Yours should be validated with your analysis, in the context of who his boss is.

The floor is yours.

knicks1248 @ 11/18/2013 6:44 PM
He wasn't a saint, but he got the guys to play defense so people where in his corner, then the playoffs came around and he lost a lot of cred and the poor start has hurt him even more.

People are getting sick and tired of the ISO's and the lack of ball movement, and the defense is starting to look worse then MDA defensive plan

gunsnewing @ 11/18/2013 6:47 PM
^That
misterearl @ 11/18/2013 6:50 PM
Knicks1248 - do you ever stop consider the significant difference in the Knicks roster from last year to this?

You want to talk defense?

Ronnie Brewer could not shoot a lick but he is tough on quality players, including Lebron. Sheed was our insurance at center. Kurt Thomas was our emergency forward.

Defense?

This year, we have no size up front and no defensive forwards.

How is that lack of quality big man depth Mike Woodson's responsibility?

How is Tyson Chandler's broken leg overlooked?

nixluva @ 11/18/2013 6:58 PM
I pointed out when MDA was still here that Woody runs the same Defense. What changed was the effort level the very day MDA resigned. The defense got better immediately even tho nothing significant had changed scheme wise. Too many we're ready to buy into the meme that somehow Woody's D was significantly different. They forget that Woody was in camp with MDA and was mostly assigned to run the D. The sudden burst of great D the day MDA resigned was a mirage. Last year the team went back to their normal effort level on D and the switching D which is the same as MDA's was about as effective as MDA's defenses have historically been. About middle of the league.
tj23 @ 11/18/2013 7:38 PM
The knicks actually started to play defense when MDA was still here. I think they were 8th in defensive efficiency when MDA quit. They finished 5th that year I believe. Last year they were in the high teens/low 20's. They haven't followed his defensive instructions since last year. This is evident if anyone actually watches the mike Woodson show. Woody can't motivate them and/or has lost their respect. They have the same exact issues defensively this year that they did last year, but they rode their hot shooting last year to 54 wins. The only thing that's regressed really is the transition defense. They all have a partial mentality on defense of "I'll defend my guy, you defend yours."
misterearl @ 11/18/2013 7:43 PM
Schemes don't play defense

Players play defense

The Knicks do not have the players to defend

Felton - lacking in lateral quicks on tender hamstring.
Shump - did somebody say second surgery?
Artest - aging with knee issues
Stoudemire - (cough)

Melo - expending more energy than most, on both ends
Bargnani - still learning
Tyson - out
Prigioni - not physical but the steals are cute

Hardaway - learning the league and the refs
Aldrich - should be worked into rotation
Smith - overplays and gambles too much

gunsnewing @ 11/18/2013 7:51 PM
More reason why it's time for a change cos the roster sure as hell ain't changin' significantly

I told you all forever there is some funny business going on, behind the scenes drama and because his pockets are fat players come here to get paid 1st and think basketball 2nd.

People thought i was spitting nonsense , this article proves it.

tj23 @ 11/18/2013 7:57 PM
Yeah, Tom Thibs scheme hasn't had any impact on chicago's defense. Boozer was always a good defender...
misterearl @ 11/18/2013 7:58 PM
playa2 - which Knicks player, using your expert intuition, is the source of the quote?

All I will say it isn't a youngster, it's a vet .
Making that kind of comment one would think it's somebody on the team who's away from the team and who's has his money already stashed.

The highest paid knick who's not a Dolan man Tyson Chandler!

It could never be Melo or Amare, he sucked them into the garden 1st with $$$$$$$, they could never turn on him now.

gunsnewing @ 11/18/2013 8:24 PM
It's probably Kmart but he's starting tomorrow. Maybe Amare who does not look happy these days
