Knicks · Rick Barry on Wfan right now talking Knicks & NBA (page 1)

gunsnewing @ 11/20/2013 9:15 AM
Rick Barry on right now with Boomer and Carton making total sense. Not the usual media crap about Melo being the best pure scorer in NBA history but

Melo doesn't make teammates better
It's up to the coach to have the players buy in to how you want them to play as a team
He cites Greg Popovich and Tim Duncan
He blames coaches for the state of the NBA

The interview will be up on Wfan.com later for anyone interested

Dagger @ 11/20/2013 9:19 AM
Rick Barry's an idiot dude, and everything you mentioned has already been said a million times over.
gunsnewing @ 11/20/2013 9:22 AM
It has been but why do you still hear people especially in the media talk about how Melo is the greatest pure scorer the game has seen and blame everyone but Melo for the Knicks struggles? Woodson, Shumpert, Tyson, Kidd, Felton, Lin, Fields, Dantoni, Walsh, Grunwald etc
gunsnewing @ 11/20/2013 9:25 AM
Also Clyde says a lot of the same things without naming names otherwise Dolan would banish him. The ultimate team player. Is he also an idiot?
gunsnewing @ 11/20/2013 9:29 AM
I will say that even the media is catching on to the fact that you can't give Melo max money and take up over a 3rd of the cap. Just gotta cross your fingers and hope the Knicks do the right thing for once

I didn't say the things he's saying are idiotic, I said he specifically is a moron. He's only parroting arguments that have been floating around the airwaves for years. I'd never call Clyde an idiot, please.

SAME OLe, same ole guns.. you are correct, that talk about best pure scorer is garbage... either you are a scorer or not.. LOL.. I never understood that term "pure scorer", I even googled it and no one seems to have a clear definition. the one I found pretty much sums up a "pure Scorer" as someone who does nothing else but score... just think about it, when you say "pure scorer" it is the absence of all that is not scoring.... so really is that a good thing?

here is an explination of what one would consider a "pure" Point guard.

Similarly, the concept of a "pure scorer" is a little mystifying. What is purity? An absence of contaminants. In human terms, a contaminant would be something immoral or, less harshly, lacking in the department of moral norms. Basically, to be pure is to successfully live up to the ideal, whatever it may be. In measuring purity in basketball, the ideal point guard would be one who sets up teammates and doesn't take too many shots himself. So measuring it is pretty straightforward: assists are pure, shots are impure.

what is confusing is that no one considers lebron the best pure scorer, yet since he has been in the league, and he came in the same year carmelo came in, has scored 3200 more points than carmelo..

kevin Durant won 3 straight scoring titles, and if you want to keep it real pretty much tied carmelo for scoring title last year.....

so how can people keep calling him, best pure scorer? I don't get it..

EnySpree @ 11/20/2013 11:08 AM
Melo is argued to be the best pure scorer.

Lebron is the best at everything. He's not a pure anything.

Durant is the best pure shooter probably. Dude is a pretty good slasher too, but he can get that jumpshot off at anytime and you can't stop him. He can't post up so he can't be called a pure scorer.

Melo is so good in the post he can school any power fwd and some centers in the league. Dude can get his jumpshot of at any time. He can drive on anyone and can finish anyway he wants and he is great at rebounding his own missed shot and putting it back. He's good in transition too. That's pretty much his whole game because like everyone says he doesn't make anyone better..... why? Because he is the best pure scorer in the league.

Tada!

gunsnewing @ 11/20/2013 11:11 AM
The only time I see Melo score in transition is when he basket hangs and doesn't get back on D. Also he is not a great finisher around the basket

He didn't get back on defense 4 times last night and he called out teammates for lack of effort

If you saw Amare in the post game he kept talking about not sharing the ball. I can only wonder who he was talking about

Melo has no help yet Amare and Bargnani were beasting

That's not true, he loves to shoot the trailer 3 on a fast break, and he normally shoots it a pretty good percentage. Although I'm not a fan of it myself.

When JR is yelling at Melo to pass the ball you know you got serious problems

If Melo is one on one in front of the rim is a basket unless you flagrant foul him.

The Detroit game he sucked cuz he was complaining too much. He took himself out the game and missed free throws and everything. Still cant lie and say he's not the best scorer. Is he selfish? Yes but you can't be the best scorer and not be selfish.

We mess up when we ask the best Option not to shoot it when the coach had no offense and nobody else is scoring.

The Knicks need a real point guard and that will put everyone in line. The point guards job is to make everyone better.

gunsnewing @ 11/20/2013 11:29 AM
I agree about the part about the PG but it goes against Woodsons ISO system

No one else can score is a myth. Bargnani and Amare have been playing great on the offensive end yet they go an entire 4th quarter without touching the ball so Melo can do that Hero Ball thing

If you think Amar'e has been playing great on offense you have very low expectations for him.

I'm not suggesting we expand Amare's role. He can only play in 5 min incriments. I'm just refuting the notion that Melo never has any help.

Forget Amare. How do you explain Melo freezing out Bargnani who's been great on the offensive end?

I can't explain it, I'm totally with you. Bargs should have gotten way more shots in the 2nd half and Melo's hero ball destroyed our chances of winning. Bargs should be getting 12-15 shots a game in my opinion.
gunsnewing @ 11/20/2013 11:41 AM
JR was even playing well yesterday yet Melo was still shooting contested off balance 20footers
gunsnewing @ 11/20/2013 11:46 AM
Melo had 7 turnovers and 1 assist last night

That's coaching though.... Woodson has to coach. Call a time out and demand the ball move. No the dude wants to give the ball to Melo and watch him burn himself out.

Its absolutely fair to say Melo is selfish because that's his nature. He's a pure scorer..... at the Same time what sets are we running? We have no philosophy on offense.

It's cool to say pay harder..... but the players have no idea what the plan is. So far its give the ball to Melo and take pictures. Can't pay hard if you don't know what to do.
