I'm calling it right now. Melo will be a Laker next season and Phil Jackson will be back to coach the team. No one is paying attention but the current Laker squad are a perfect fit for the Triangle. These player will transition very easily into the triangle. They are long, athletic and move the ball well. People always say Phil always had the best player in the league when he won his championships. This may be true but he always had the best scorer in the league too, which in the past happen to be the best player. The best score in the league is Melo. Melo in a system like the triangle, he might finally win with the right coach who can reign him in some. On paper Kobe and Melo together may not make sense, but if you watched their two Olympic runs, Melo and Kobe had the best chemistry between any two players.
Leaving is a big gamble, going to LA is an even bigger gamble. You don't win in LA and it ruins your legacy. That team won't be set up well for him in the future. Plus he learned a lot watching Dwight's issues. I can't see him going there, although he may entertain it. That could be a disaster for his career, where as NY he can go down as one of the greatest here with just a couple nice playoff runs.

Thanks bro. But last years moderate successes vs the previous 10 years of epic fails make your statement about damage incorrect. Add that fact that we are clear of payroll in 1 1/2 years to do whatever we choose. I like shiny new things as much as the next guy but you gotta get over these couple of draft picks you keep fussing over.

Help me with the math and what type of team the Lakers can be with Melo and why he would want to go there.
Nash $10M
Melo $15M
Kobe $13M?
Pau $13M?
-----------------------
~$51M
You got $10M to spend on another 8 players, so that means they all are min players.
Or maybe Melo, Kobe, Pau all take pay cuts down to $12M each? $46M. So you get $16M to spend on 8 players. Or drop Pau and you got nothing in the middle?
Why does Melo go to this team to play with old Kobe and possibly old Pau? Kobe gonna be 36, Pau 34 and Nash 40.
Phil Jackson has age and health issues, plus the way the Lakers treated him last time they were looking for a coach burnt that bridge. Phil only usually takes over teams that can win it all- Carmelo alone isn't going to cut it. Likely the Lakers keep D'Antoni, in which case I can't see Melo signing with them.

Miami did it with min players , the key is they all played their role.
Nash is done, why include him, Blake and Farmar are holding it down without him.
Melo has a better chance leaving and winning a chip in LA, than he does in NY.
When you play for money only you stay and keep losing, but when you wise up and realize you alone isn't the answer you leave and go elsewhere. see LEBRON - BOSH

Melo and Kobe CANNOT co exist- why do people think that's a possibility- it would be an awful combination!
And the fact that Kobe has been in the league for 17yrs and like KG he will eventually hit the wall sooner than later unless he stays on the HGH

They played well on olympic team together, matter of fact they meshed well.
Kobe is going to be 38 in 2yrs? How much do people think he has left? Even with HGH?bhe came into the league at 17. 21yrs in and Melo is going to want to play with a 38yr old Kobe? Unless you are telling me Melo is going to replace Kobe? Lakers aren't stupid enough to give A 30yr old Melo $30mil per. They will just draft or add the next Kobe/Shaq and get another 20yr run

If he leaves it would be likely to LA, however playing with a broke down Kobe doesn't seem like a great option. At best he gets 2 years of playing with an all-star level Kobe, then after that he finds himself in a far worse situation than he has in NY.

How much do you think Melo thinks Kobe has left? I can't imagine much.

Kobe just got 24 per for 2 years. He couldve had as much as 70 for 2 so he took substantially less. We have to wash Nash and his 9.5mm--my bet is they trade hm out with a couple of draft picks. and open up maximum cap space. Carmelo is gone they better think about it.

knix--which player on the Knicks do you think is anywhere close to Kobe's level?

I included Nash cause that's what he is getting paid, he's under contract.
So you are saying Melo will take $14, along with Kobe... but he won't do that in NY?

Of course no one is, but the question is does Melo think he can win a title with Kobe now? And what happens 2 years from now if he doesn't win one right away? It would be the most shortsighted move he could possibly make.

If they wash Nash out they are at 27mm They could swipe Melo for 4 years 80mm opt out after three which would put the cap at 46-47mm to fill out the roster. Maybe give Gasol 7 Hill 5 etc... The bottom line is this--what team is better--the Knicks as is or with Kobe and 25mm to spend?
