Coaches Job/RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

A coaches job is to properly MOTIVATE each player and team, from training camp, all the way to the end of the season, most importantly in the play offs, but even after the season, to give players assignments in working in certain skills for the better of the team and for each individual/player to further their development
In the end, it is up to the player to do it or and how hard to train/develop/tone those skills, but that is where the GM must step in, if he doesn't feel the player is giving the effort to do so to either trade or release the player, hopefully while getting good value in return
It is also the head coaches responsibility and staff to fully correct the bad habits of players and a TEAM as a whole, thus "being held accountable", in the season for the play offs
Having good communication, respect, leadership qualities, assigning roles for each player and a TEAM as hole, along with developing future roles/skills for players team down the road, ability to a make adjustments, along with X's and O's, and maximizing the talent's of the TEAM is more important than maximizing a players abilities, along with motivating them through out the season and especially in the play offs where it counts the most.
Finding a balance between individual players achievements and the TEAM's goals takes sacrifices, but ultimately WINNING is the biggest prize along with a players contract for their motivation
NUMBERS are unfortunately, usually the ultimate factor in motivation for justifying players contracts, a reason why Melo always wants the ball in his hands and gives much effort in to producing NUMBERS even though if he will not utilize some of his energy on other area's even though they are crucial to being a WINNING TEAM
Every player wants to get paid in the league and it is up to the coach to find that balance in which players will get that chance to contribute and justify their contracts
Unfortunately, there is a salary cap, so NOT all players can get what they seek, and sometimes we need to cut ties with those who think they are worth more than they are especially when we can get a fair or even better in return for them
Adjustments are also needed for each team, from each game to the start of the season till the end, especially in the play offs again
Depending on match ups, opponents strengths and weakness's, and our own strength's and weakness's, a reason why DECEPTION and having a philosophy and the talent to run a system is needed, especially so ROLE PLAYERS are properly motivated to produce and stay in the game
That is why Melo's chances of advancing in play offs are weak, because he wants to generate numbers at an inefficient rate, at the expense of ball movement and chemistry, to justify his status and contract in the NBA
A balance must be made to properly motivate Melo and the team with ISO, along with creating opportunities and roles for the less talented players on the team
GM, President of Operations, Coaches, and sometimes *OWNERS's" must be able to work with each other

Well, if Melo said "I AM NOT SIGNING an EXTENSION WITH ANY OTHER TEAM BUT NYK's, then we wouldn't be in this game, and Melo/Denver/Knick's/Net's would have all been playing the chicken game and see if Denver was willing to let him walk for NO compensation and if Nets would trade for him with the so called "6 1st rounders or w/e" without Melo signing an extension
My guess, is that Walsh would have got a deal done that would have involved the garbage we got with Melo, with much less picks and/or Wilson Chandler, MosGov, Felton, and draft picks 1 unprotected, 1 swap, 2 GS 2nd round picks (which was predicted to be a high 2nd round picks as GS sucked at the time)
Maybe we can or we cannot, but if we didn't overpay for him, we would have the supporting cast, assets, youth, with players at PEAK VALUE at the time that we traded for a bunch of horrible contracts that disabled us to use acquire the talent we needed to actually have a supporting cast around him
So as we just started paying for the deals for Melo and not including the deal's that we overpaid because we had no leverage with other teams as we had to build a contending team with limited assets with the limited time we had, Melo can walk away from it all or we can continue to overpay him so he can be H20, Joe Johnson part 2/3, while he is going to be on the downside of his career and is not worth half of our teams salary cap space

The problem with the Knicks starts with Dolan. The team isn't going to excel until he dies or sells, unless he suddenly realizes that he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing and manages the team like the Rangers. He literally doesn't know how to hire the right people and can't get out of his own way. It's infuriating.
If you go back and look, Melo played on a ton of teams that simply weren't very good. When Allen Iverson and Chauncey Billups are the best guys you've ever played with, that's a raw deal in the category of supporting cast.
2003-2004: Lost to the Timberwolves (this was the Cassell/Sprewell/Garnett Wolves, which is probably their best team ever)
2004-2005: Lost to the NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs
2005-2006: Lost to the Clippers, but the Nugget roster was VERY medicore here...
2006-2007: Lost to the San Antonio Spurs, who went on to win the NBA title in dominant fashion (nobody in the league took them past 6 that year)
2007-2008: Lost to NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers (better team)
2008-2009: Lost to the NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers (better team again)
2009-2010: Lost to the Utah Jazz (this is about the only head-scratcher on the list, although the teams were very even and Deron Williams against Billups is mismatch in favor of Utah, who also had Boozer and Millsap against medicore Denver bigs...
2010-2011: Melo was traded mid-season and they got swept by Boston...
2012-2012: Lost to NBA Champion Miami Heat (Amare punched a fire extinguisher, etc...)
and last year they lost to Indiana after the collapse of JR Smith in the Boston series and Amar'e basically not being there...
A lot of that list is losing to better teams, which makes sense. I'd say I don't know if it's possible to build around Melo after all these years because nobody he's been with has acquired talent correctly. I don't know if that's coincidence or Melo's influence, but the supporting cast point is there for a reason. It doesn't excuse the criticisms and Melo's shortcomings as a player, but it is there...

The trade wasn't just for Melo it was for Melo and Billups. Knicks had an opportunity to amnesty Amare and allow Billups contract to expire giving us the ability to hit the free agent market hard and have a team built (this current season) that could make a run for a good amount of yrs. Then again last time we had major cap space we signed Amare to 100mil contract with no insurance when nobody else was offering him close to that amount so we might have failed with that opportunity as well. Not to mention we traded our lottery pick (Hill) after passing on a bunch of quality Gs(Derozen, Jennings, Holiday, Lawson, Teague) in order to save up enough money to end up giving Amare his 100mil. Instead we amnestied Billups an expiring contract to sign Tyson and kept ourselves at the mercy of Amare's knees. During the trade they had the opportunity to choose to add Fields as his value was high at this time, but chose to keep Fields and give up future draft pick(s)instead. Fields was later let go or nothing. Then Lin falls into our laps but they allow him to leave because Dolan's feelings were hurt that Lin went back for more money.
Bottom Line Knicks had plenty of options, opportunity & choices to be a high level team after the Melo trade but aren't because they made many poor decisions. Doesn't matter if we made the trade or not. The Knicks track record of poor decisions no matter what route they take would derail it anyway. Draft picks would still be traded for veteran players to get Gallo, Chandler, Amare, Felton, Fields, Douglas, Mozgov over the hump into playoff contention. As the Knicks wouldn't believe a young player would be able to come in and do it. Gallo, Chandler, Felton, Fields, Mozgov would probably all be overpaid.
So blame Melo now while he is on the Knicks like it was all Marbury's fault a couple yrs ago. Then when Melo is no longer on the Knicks and they are still making the same poor decisions we can blame the next player or coach or Gm.
Cut off the head, we might have a chance.
Dolan has to step away and take pride when his franchise succeeds that he made a good decision to delegate.

Not to mention we traded our lottery pick (Hill) after passing on a bunch of quality Gs(Derozen, Jennings, Holiday, Lawson, Teague) in order to save up enough money to end up giving Amare his 100mil. Instead we amnestied Billups an expiring contract to sign Tyson and kept ourselves at the mercy of Amare's knees. During the trade they had the opportunity to choose to add Fields as his value was high at this time, but chose to keep Fields and give up future draft pick(s)instead. Fields was later let go or nothing. Then Lin falls into our laps but they allow him to leave because Dolan's feelings were hurt that Lin went back for more money.
Bottom Line Knicks had plenty of options, opportunity & choices to be a high level team after the Melo trade but aren't because they made many poor decisions. Doesn't matter if we made the trade or not. The Knicks track record of poor decisions no matter what route they take would derail it anyway. Draft picks would still be traded for veteran players to get Gallo, Chandler, Amare, Felton, Fields, Douglas, Mozgov over the hump into playoff contention. As the Knicks wouldn't believe a young player would be able to come in and do it. Gallo, Chandler, Felton, Fields, Mozgov would probably all be overpaid.
So blame Melo now while he is on the Knicks like it was all Marbury's fault a couple yrs ago. Then when Melo is no longer on the Knicks and they are still making the same poor decisions we can blame the next player or coach or Gm.

Regarding Billups, he had double Felton's salary and Felton had far more value than Billups at the time
Meanwhile Felton was flipped for Andre Miller and a future 1st round pick for Felton and we were unable to move Billups for free
Billups career was on a big downhill and he was no longer a PG because of it, without the ability to penetrate and that was why he had been playing mainly SG ever since
Felton, as his 1st Knick run, on the other hand was having a great year along with Gallo, Wilson Chandler, MosGoV, but Uri convinced Dolan to sell low on our ex Knick players and BUY HIGH on Melo, Billups *WASHED UP ALREADY*, at his age he was predicted to NOT be part of anyones big plans as a major role
And MOST IMPORTANTLY
When we picked up Billups option, it was AFTER we were swept by Boston, days after, and the lock out year was during the summer
SO THE AMENSTY did not exist yet, so that was something you cannot anticipate on happening
You cannot blame Walsh or Dantoni, neither wanted to part with all those pieces for Melo and a bunch of horrible contracts, in addition to all the assets and 40m in cap space we gave up
And what do you have to about why MELO DIDN'T say he would only sign an extension with NYK, which would give NYK the leverage that Walsh KNEW HE SHOULD HAVE over DENVER
IF MELO really wanted to be in NY and be a contender....
He didn't care, end of story, as it contradicts itself, and it is why we have don't have enough talent to build around him

1, with 1-2 *USEFULL* players, and/or 1extra pick or 1player, and EXPIRINGS at best, NOT HALF A ROSTER, 1st round pick, 1swap, 2 HIGH PREDICTED 2nd picks, and a TON OF CAP SPACE for a bunch of HORRIBLE
We simply gsold all of our players at a LOW and had no value in giving up expirings and saving Denver 60m in cap space/taxes, while paying a HIGH for MELO
BIllups was considered a BAD CONTRACT and an AGED PLAYER that was going to break down and fall, but Denver sold him to us as a positive when he was in fact a negative because of his age/contract, and not having value
So I am glad u brought up Billups because we should be giving up less picks and talent if Denver wanted us to take him from us
Of course Dolan had to step in and change all of us DW's plans, he had waited patiently to execute, end of story........
What separates the moves/philosophy that Houston has been doing, basically collecting assets and signing players that they could flip to wait for that ALL STAR to build around
