After watching the past few games, it has become apparent that J.R. Smith simply is not suited for a big minute role. The guy is killing our offensive flow and his defensive effort is always up and down. If we can get a late first rounder or early second rounder for him, the Knicks should trade him. We can then rely on Shumpert and Hardaway at the SG position. It might be a small step back now, but by the playoffs, Hardaway's game will be solid and we can hopefully avoid some of the unneeded gunning that our team goes through. Melo is enough of a gunner for any team. We cannot afford two bad shot takers. Trade JR Smith now and it will be addition by subtraction, plus it will free us from one of our long-term contracts.

How? Good luck finding a trade partner. Maybe him for OJ Majo who makes $8 per and is also having a lousy season
I'd make the same argument about Melo - we seem to play harder at times without him.

Actually not a bad idea. Mayo played some PG in Vancouver before Conley got there and he kinda got pushed to the side for Conley and Gay. I always kinda liked him.
Methinks JR has a sub zero trade value right now, especially considering you have to worry about his (useless) brother along with him....
I think it's time to get a coach that will be more offensive minded. Woodson has to be the worst offensive coach in the league ... Smith is a great talent that needs a structured offense to be successful. he needs to drive more and work off the ball more to get open shots. If he could just focus on that on offense we would be looking at a back to back six man of the year. You'll never get back in talent the talent you would be sending out in a smith deal. Jr has star ability in the right offense. Woodson needs to go.. Get someone who can run a offense that focuses on getting the most out of our talents on this team. I think it really showed how important j Kidd was to this team last year. The best teams in the league have great pgs we need one ... And jr prob won't get you one

Huh? Im not the biggest Woodson fan but Smith had his best season under him and secured his biggest payday under him.Woodson repeatedly has instructed him to drive rather than just hoist up threes. No one wanted Smith out of China and no one seemed to be too interested in his free agency given his issues and undisciplined ways. He was a part time player in NO and Denver and wore out his welcome at both places. No one could get through to him there, hold the player accountable
Smiths trade Value is most likely zero. We literally have zero trade assets besides Shumpert and Tyson Chandler. Even Melo is untradeable, being that he's a soon to be free agent.
I agree - but the Knicks would have to take back more years and give up another 18 picks to get someone to take him

Woodson also had Kidd calling the shots... Woodson also wore out his welcome in atl with bad offense and players giving up on defense... Imagine if we had a coach that would structure a offense to players strengths jr needs to be a driver and a work off the ball get open jump shooter . When he creates his own fade away jumper with the defender draped all over him. It's playing against his talents. We need a coach who will not allow him to play outside his talent, like okc they alway play off of Durant. As we should always play through melo to get our jump shooters open and drivers a open lane... When we play through melo which is really rare we create great scoring chances for our other players durant touches the ball every position and look at okc on offense . If we run the ball through melo to get everyone involved good things will happen... But Woodson doesn't run the offense through melo it's ether a pick and pop or roll or just give the ball to melo while everyone else stands on the perimeter motionless.. That is a coaching fault on Woodson. Players should always be working to get open around melo daring teams to double team him... We did that last year and won 54 games with a starting five of Felton,Pablo, shumpert, melo, and chandler. So we have the talent it's just not being used correctly.

Papabear Says
Man stop it!! Thats not true. Look New York is a tough place to play. Melo is our best player hands down. Who do you replace him with? Who ever we bring in as our star player you guys would be ready to trade him after a few bad losses. And remember the game has changed. No one is going to the finals with out having 2 -3 all Stars in the starting lineup. We have just one.
You can flip the Knicks a thousand times as long as one constant is in the equation it will always be a negative. That constant is the meddling of Dolan. Unless Dolan hires a capable GM/president to run the operation, Dolan should write the checks and stay out of deals. You knows he will never do that. It really sucks to be a Knicks fan. I have become indifferent to anything the Knicks do.

great post, fully agree. Woodson's support of JR has burned so much of his own credibility, and, in return, seemingly, JR remains uncoachable. that's on the player, not coach. Dictionary definition of addition by subtraction - cut him.

There was a lot of standing around last year too. I mean half of our roster was made up of spot up shooters. Woodson definitely does leave a lot of room for improvement with our offense though as well. I really don't understand how Melo isn't moved around more. People wonder why he always shoots in the low 40's percent, well he doesn't get any easy looks. Our offense is so predictable it's embarassing. There's no down screens, back screens, backdoor cuts, or handoffs. Every single play is a high ball screen that ends up in a kickout and usually a poor 3. Either that or we space out and feed Melo/Amare in the post and make them work hard for all their points. Nobody has to gameplan against us or adjust. All you have to do is guard the 3 point line and push the ball in transition and we're toast. The part that really gets me is that the players know that this isn't working yet there really aren't any changes made. I don't know if theyre stubborn or just content with losing. /Rant
The teams is just fundamentally flawed and needs to be reworked. The first move is to trade JR for a draft pick. I honestly think that we could get a late first or early second rounder for him. The guy only makes like $5 mill a year, which is not bad for an off the bench scorer. The next thing is to try and buy another draft pick. We then just try to develop Shumpert, Hardaway, and Tyler. I honestly would also think about trading Melo. If we can get a combination of high draft picks and good young players for him, I think we would be better off in 2 years tearing this whole mess down and building up a new team built on defense and a solid structured offense.
