How is it the same as making no deal? What could happen is we lose melo for nothing. I'd rather get something for him- and Jordan and 2-3 first rounders is much more than the Cavs got for LeBron.Cleveland lost LeBron because they had no leverage: LeBron was an unrestricted free agent and Miami had cap space. The Knicks, on the other hand, have leverage. For one, Melo is cash-hunger, which makes it difficult to turn down the extra $30 million he could get. Second, none of the teams that interest Melo have cap space or can acquire it easily (LAC and CHI). That puts him in a bind and makes it unlikely he'd leave us without needing a sign and trade. The trade you proposed is the bargain basement, last ditch effort trade we can make in that situation because they'd need to move Jordan and another players contract. So what would be the point in making that deal now if we can make that deal later?
You make the deal now because it gives them a chance with melo to win a chip. Maybe you get their first round pick this year. You start the rebuilding now.
Look, I'd rather lose melo for nothing than have him lock up so much of our cap space. Melo is a great player. But he is not good enough to get us to get us to a championship. Heck, he isn't good enough to get us to the play offs this year. He will soon be on the wrong side of 30 with a ton of minutes on his body. His play is going to decline, and we don't have the assets to build a winner now.
Why would it be our prerogative to see the Clippers win a championship? It does nothing for us or our circumstances.
I agree with you that we need to move Melo for the reasons you mentioned but there is no need to take cents on the dollar when we still have leverage. If all the Clippers are offering are Jordan and more bullshit, I could hold out and make that deal in the summer (assuming that we could execute a sign and trade).

I don't think we have that much leverage- and I don't know there are that many places we can move him during the summer.
I think you start talking with the clippers and whoever else - maybe we can get Blake or some other established player. But I think I'd make the deal as close to a no brainer all around - for Melo, for Clips or whomever we are dealing with. Because otherwise, you risk losing him for nothing, just like the Lakers did with Howard.

The Lakers lost Howard because one of the teams he had interest in had cap space. There is no such market for Melo right now, mitigating the risk of losing him for nothing. That means we can hold out as long as possible before losing him, which is why I don't think we need to trade for shit in the mean time.

Melo is definitely better than Blake. More like Melo is 2nd tier Superstar below LeDouche, Durant and Kobe. Blake right now is 3rd tier with Wade and Dirk Diggler. Blake is a true PF and by definition would need good guards to feed him the ball.
With that said, I am ready to let Melo go. Just don't fuck it up. With Dolan and his cronies...you know we would end up giving an unprotected 1st rounder to go with Melo to another team.
