Knicks · If Melo brings a Championship to New York, would that make him as popular as Lebron James?? And Why? (page 1)

Papabear Says

If Melo brings us a championship to the Knicks I think he will be almost as popular as Lebron. New York is the basketball Capital of the world. He would have done something that has not been done in over 40 years. That's my opinion. Whats yours? Maybe he will be more popular.

NYY1NYK2 @ 1/30/2014 12:11 AM
If he brings a chip to NY, he will be the face of the NBA.
NYY1NYK2 @ 1/30/2014 12:12 AM
Nothing is compared to winning in NY. Ask Derek Jeter
alwaysaknick @ 1/30/2014 1:18 AM
Hates gonna hate.

I don't care if a champ will make Melo as popular as LBJ.

I just want Melo brings it to NY.

Is Lebron even popular? Most people hate him

Bonn1997 - you have proof?

He makes almost every list of the most hated athletes but I don't have a Gallup poll if that's what you're looking for. I wasn't taking this as seriously as coverage of our president.
Syniko @ 1/30/2014 7:29 AM
Melo is going to walk after this season and he's going to walk all the way to the Los Angeles Lakers because Kobe is going to do everything in his power to get Melo to walk. What Kobe wants, Kobe gets.

NYK should just let Melo go and go back to being a lottery pick team and hope they find their next Jeremy Lin and then screw it up by trading/releasing him. The New York Knicks front office are a bunch of idiots.

ToddTT @ 1/30/2014 7:54 AM
If Melo wins without being part of a trio, and does it in NY... that will be huge. Clyde will have to start worrying about his status as greatest Knick. And it will tarnish what the Heat have accomplished, if only a little.

However, if Lebron wins a third this year... that will be tough to eclipse. Trio or not, that is impressive.

Not to mention that Lebron has erased a lot of the negativity he had created for himself when leaving Cleveland. For me I think I stopped disliking the guy when he tackled that fan on the court.

That said, I really hope we don't have a similar thread to this in a year or two with Paul George's name in it.

Are you implying Paul George as a New York Knicks? Pacers doesn't have very many to cling on to but you know for damn sure they're going to cling on to Paul George as tight as tight can be.

I see Paul George as young Lebron James in Cleveland. He's only going to get better. In four or five years, Paul George is going to be criticized heavily if he walks away from Indiana.

Pacer struck it rich with PG.

Dont believe Melo will ever be as popular as Lebron even with a ring. He's the best player on the planet and Lebron is more fun to watch on a court. I don't believe LeBron is hated with the same passion post Cavs. I think enough time has passed for people to appreciate what a great player he has become. His commercials are better as well.

If Melo did win one he would be right up there with other sports legends who brought NY a championship and treated like royalty by Knicks fans and Melo fans at large, but I dont believe he will surpass LeBron in popularity.

Mooby's bring hope championships, teams win championships.

Why if we are the Mecca would its most ardent fans speak of such starphuchedness?

Our legacy teams are not from Clydes deliverance but from a collective on men who come together for a single purpose.

For those who forget look at the quality of The Jordan Era Bulls double three-peat rosters and consider how such a thing happens.

Lebron is that rare player that can carry a team on its back all the way to the finals. Even that team in Cleveland.

Melo has shown in his 11 years to have been a member of some pretty good teams in Denver and as the best player on that team he could not carry them that far. Im not knocking him, he is just not at that level. For what its worth, he a great player but not in the GOAT conversation.

If Knicks win a championship with Melo on the roster and he is the best player no doubt will he be celebrated in NY for decades and if he is the MVP of the finals his global brand would no doubt increase. Lebron has 4 trips to finals and 4 MVP awards.

championship????? I will be happy with a couple deep playoff runs. Lets build a team that at least can challenge the Heat. I mean we all always knew the MJ Bulls were simply a beter team than the Ewing Knicks, but the Ewing Knicks were good enough to compete, and when they got hot they could win games. Lets get to that point... while some thought Bargs might work here and others didnt I think most agreed that this roster wasnt much of an upgrade if at all vs. last year's team.

We need better players

Knixkik @ 1/30/2014 10:04 AM
Winning in ny takes your status to a higher level than winning anywhere else. 1 title in ny would trump winning multiple titles in Miami, LA, or Chicago.

I don't see the Heat getting past Indy this year. The emergence of Paul George and the continued development of Hibbert has been an amazing development in the East. I'm not ready to call myself an Indy fan, but once the Knicks drop out of contention, or get eliminated from the first round, my rooting interests will slide to another team until season's end.

I have been a life long Knicks/Giants/Yankees/Ranger guy. Always will be. But this Sunday? GO BRONCOS!!!

EnySpree @ 1/30/2014 10:39 AM
Getting the knicks a championship after all these years would be the greatest story in all sports.

Want to live forever? Win a chip for the knicks

MSG3 @ 1/30/2014 10:39 AM
Melo winning a title here would totally flip what people say about him in terms of legacy. In terms of NY, I think he'd move into the pantheon of top 5 athletes in NYC history. For me personally he'd be #1. Yankees are the most famous team in the world, but when the Knicks are good this becomes a Knicks town, even if all other teams are great at the same time. Right now I think the top 5 athletes in NY History is:

Babe Ruth
DiMaggio
Mantle
Jeter
Messier

Rookie @ 1/30/2014 10:52 AM
Which would you rather see on a highlight reel....Melo shooting a spot up jumper or Lebron flying through the air on a fast break dunk?

Lebron will always be more popular

MSG3 @ 1/30/2014 10:54 AM
I agree that LeBron will always be more popular. He's the best player arguably in league history. It's like MJ...imagine Ewing won that title in 94. Today, he'd be immortal in NYC but Jordan is still Jordan.

Broadway Joe is still eating off winning for the jets.

Clyde is still the man. Bradley, Willis reed are both looked at like Jedi's.

Bernie Williams. Strawberry. Bill Parcels. Theses guys will live forever in NYC. That's what you play for. I don't think you get that respect in other cities. We respect our champions.

Melo would be bigger than all if them if the knicks can get a championship team around him.

IronWillGiroud @ 1/30/2014 11:19 AM
if this guy wins a chip in ny,

he will be a bilbo baggins-level legend,
