Carmelo Anthony: Re-Signing With Knicks Is 'First Priority'
Feb 14, 2014 4:30 PM EST

Carmelo Anthony said on Friday that his "first priority" is to re-sign with the New York Knicks in free agency.

Anthony will become an unrestricted free agent and has stated in the past that he wants to stay with the Knicks.

When asked whether he will consider taking less money from the Knicks to give the team extra salary flexibility, Anthony said, "Without a doubt."

The Knicks are 20-32 this season.

"I know for me my main thing is I want to win, and I want to win now. Not just win one playoff series, I want to win championships. I want to win a championship. So I'm gonna do whatever I have to do to win a championship. If that means testing free agency and see what happens on that market then so be it."
Bonn1997 @ 2/15/2014 6:53 AM
If you're going to put all those smiley faces, you could have at least left off the 20-32 part
Allanfan20 @ 2/15/2014 8:06 AM
Yeah he pretty much said anything but.

We have presidents that went back on their words. Let's see how loyal Melo is and his commitment to winning. Is he going to recruit or be recruited.
Knicks22 @ 2/15/2014 8:43 AM

He has every right to do what he wants, just suprised by those fans who have read his comments this week as both: 1) he will stay: and 2) NYK should want him to stay.

Based on watching him in NY, his commitment to winning is subject to doing it his way, which means, ball goes through him, no PG oriented system, no effort on D by the team's best player, and ISO ball.

My point is simply that his belief/requirement of above will not lead to great success as a team, and, honestly doubt how other players/coaches would be attracted to joining him.

Great scoring talent, working very hard this year, but, don't see how - even if cap money availalbe - you build around him.

This. Look I like Melo but i accepted what he is. A great scoring talent in fact a top 3 scoring talent BUT he just doesnt have a great overall game. Not his fault just the way he is made. I dont think you can build around Melo as the MAIN Guy , he needs to play with a guy who is a better overall player
tj23 @ 2/15/2014 9:04 AM
I think you can win with Melo as your best player, but not BY FAR your best player. He needs another guy or 2 that is near his level. For example, Melo and Kyle Lowry is NOT getting it done. If there was a legit PG, the ball would not run through him as much. If we had say.. Kyrie, Melo, and KLove you could still argue Melo is the best player, but he doesn't need 20 iso's a game with that group(I know...it's aiming high)
Nalod @ 2/15/2014 9:10 AM
He can also take less to play for a ready made contender.

Mills was bought in to be the savvy CAA cap master and lay out a plan that even Lebron might want to be a part of!

Im just guessing. Melo is handling the process.

Great post. Not sure if I agree about not being able to win with melo but I think you make great points.

Im a Knicks fan first. Carmelo is non a prodigal son like a Derek Jeter or a Patrick ewing. The Knicks gave MUCH less respect to Bernard King who did more for the Knicks in the same time. Ill keep Carmelo if its in our best interests and if not Id trade him--either way
playa2 @ 2/15/2014 12:40 PM
Trust me if Any other superstar player "Kobe, Durant, Lebron, etc...(at his age) was in Melo's position, teams would be putting together packages to acquire him. Not so with Melo

We win with Melo with the right pieces in place. Look Paul Pierce how many rings did he win without Garnett and Ray Allen? How many rings did Garnett win without Ray Allen and Paul Pierce and how many rings did Ray Allen win with out Paul Pierce , Garnett, Lebron James and Wade?
It's like a song I wrote years ago. Everyone Needs Someone. And I know the Knicks record sucks and it doesn't matter if Melo is the best player on the team or not. It's that he is sticking it out in New York when no one else wanted to come here. They only used us to get more money from their teams. Melo is holding Dolan and Mills to the fire with let's get a plan together that I can believe in and sign off on.

We don't have Kobe, Durant, Lebron, etc. We have Melo. Weve been putting things together for the past 40 years and won nothing. So what makes you think things will change. So Kobe, Durant, Lebron, is better than Melo but this is New York and we have Melo so stop you complaining and accept what it is. 40 year of nothing so I am will to see what Melo can help us do. He is a great player.

Bernard was a better player. The thing that hurts Melo IMO is even though he is a top scorer he has weaknesses in other parts of the game which keep him a bit below the elite players

Melo needs good GM and coach who will have enough charisma to suppress Melo's ego for his own good.
Melo is extremely talented player in wrong place and surrounded with wrong people.
If he cannot get it he will face the consequences to suck the rest of his carrier in the doldrums of NBA.

Melo's a talented scorer the other parts on his game arent on par with his scoring, Melo's neds to trust guys around him and not do iso too much. I always though George Karl gave the most honest analysis of melo

Well Mills was brought in because he is more charismatic and dignified then Grunwald apparently. Hope that helps. Not sure what other credentials he has but Berman reported he was the master mind behind the McDyess trade.
nixluva @ 2/15/2014 9:26 PM
Mills biggest job is to find a way to add a Legit PG. Don't know who that could be, but Melo is just fine and does enough to win if you have a good supporting cast and that cast NEEDS a real PG. A good decision maker on the floor like a Rondo would be a perfect match with Melo. The idea that we need to have some huge influx of talent is overblown IMO. We lose due to having the worst back court in the league. Lots of mediocre players are made better by having a legit PG. I think THJ will be a fine SG going forward, so a legit PG is the missing piece. Melo went the furthest when he had Billups, so...
