Knicks · “When does garbage time start?” (page 1)

The conversation between Van Gundy and Mike Breen was triggered by a graphic perhaps explaining why the Knicks had gotten off to such a poor start. In their six previous games played before 3 p.m., they had lost them all, by an average of 24 points.

“Here I am, I am making excuses (for the Knicks),” said Van Gundy, in a decidedly disgusted-with-himself tone. “Be ready to play. Just play. You’re getting paid — play.”

“I’m glad you caught yourself,” said Breen, the play-by-play man.

Van Gundy was not amused.

“No, I’m serious,” Van Gundy moaned. “Either you have it matter or you don’t. And if it matters to them you come out ready to play.”

Van Gundy was assigning blame to the players, including Carmelo Anthony, now considered a hero around here because he plays hard, scores points and says the right things. There is a desperate tone from those in the media now deifying him.

Anthony is a standout on a team full of losers. That’s something for the franchise and its delusional fan base to be proud of, right?

No big thing. With Anthony alone on a fragile pedestal, there are plenty of other targets to point fingers at. That’s what it has come down to. This is the only entertainment value the Knicks have left.

Some lucky national announcers will get more time to ponder this in front of fans — at least ones with strong stomachs. Amazingly, the Knicks are scheduled to appear six more times on national TV, including two (April 6 at Miami, April 13 vs. Chicago) exclusive Sunday ABC dates.

Coming off their performance last season, the Knicks earned the belief of NBA scheduling gnomes. They loaded up on ’Bockers appearances and now are feeling the pain.

ABC even granted the Knicks “super max” status, allowing them to appear six times, one over the maximum number of appearances other teams are allowed. Only five teams have “super max” status.
As things turned out, this is the only honor that will be bestowed upon the Knicks this season. Unfortunately this show of faith winds up being an embarrassment for the NBA and an eyesore for eyeballs who decided to tune in and will continue to do so.

Oh, maybe Van Gundy will even get to work these games.

Poor guy.

For the Knicks, garbage time starts around December

Ugh:

3/19 vs Indiana - ESPN
3/25 @ Lakers - TNT
4/2 vs Brooklyn - ESPN
4/6 @ Miami - ABC
4/13 vs Chicago - ABC
4/15 @ Brooklyn - TNT

When we didn't have any bonafide "stars", didn't the league used to abruptly take away the few appearances from the national TV schedule the Knicks had?

It's hard to believe there won't be more interesting games to air come April if the Knicks aren't fighting for 8th place.

I can't see us winning any of these games. In fact, I think there is only 1 close game, and thats the Lakers. But like always, we will find a way to lose in the 4th quarter. Seems like thats when Melo says F U Woody, I'm going nut. And continues to throw up bricks, as he's hitting his 40 minute stride, while bricking everything he puts up. I believe garbage time is after Melo gets hurt from playing 40 plus minutes. This is the knicks plan anyway. Negotiate a contract with an injured Melo, which will scare other teams away as he approaches his 30's.
