Knicks · Berger Article: Phil Jackson joins knicks front office as latest savior (page 2)

Because
1) Phil can't play
2) Phil don't do tanking with no starsDo you think Melo is a star player?
Do you think Phil came here to oversee a ground-up rebuilding process?
Do you think Phil has a long track record for doing things like that?
melo is not a star you can build a team around. he is a last piece you add once a team has been established and has an identity and a solid coach and gm tandem. he is like mark aguirre.
i don't know what pj's motivation is except that he wants to win.

i plan to watch tonight. see you on the game thread.
really put off by general media reaction all week - stupid idea, he'd be a fool, another blunder by Knicks, etc.
Dolan is trying - once again, apparently putting up huge money to bring in a savoir. He gave Larry B full control, did for a bit with Walsh, rightly or wrongly, agrees to fund the ambitious Big Three of Melo, AMare, Tyson - didnt work out, not Dolan's fault. Now, he's trying again with one of the biggest names in the sport.
Dolan bashing is easy, and cheap way to sell tabloids, but, in reality, knocking him for this move is unfair.
I think this is a win win situation and Melo must understand he needs much more than JR Smith, STAT, Felton, and Tim Hardaway JR as the supporting cast
While I don't think Melo is a DOMINANT piece to run the triangle, I think if he was surrounded with 1-2 STARs he could be very successful in it
Melo must embrace his ability to be a MID POST shooter, similar to how Jordan perfected it to be a great efficient player
The triangle isn't about making the ALL STAR's play better, it is about putting the role players in a system to be highly productive, and making it easier for EVERYONE else on the floor
If run successfully with the right pieces, it requires opponents defense to pick and choose what they would give up as an option
In the end, I think we would need at least a STAR like Aldridge/Kevin Love, to make it work with Melo, and some solid role players to come play and staying at a discount
This move only would attract pieces to come to play in NYK, especially those who want to win, and have not had successful careers like Kevin Love
His 11 rings, calm demeanor, and respect from players/coaches/around the league, improves our chances especially with Dolan out of the picture now with BB decisions

haha - you know they will lose since our hero's Tyson and Stat are out so you want to be there

15-18 million tops or else I let him go.

I don't care what he makes after 2015, I would however, like for him to take a discount for 1 year, as we would be able to attract the necessary pieces with the enticement of Phil Jackson to attract STARS and role players over, possibly even at a discount if Melo leads the way
It is like backloading a contract...
Think of it as sacrificing one year of salary for the better of your legacy and to make up for the way we overpaid to trade for him
It would instantly shut everyone up about him being *selfish*
If STAT does have a player option for this summer, if he can do the same, we would have some flexibility to make some moves if we can trade Tyson Chandler/Iman to OKC

No way Stat is taking a discount especially since this is his last real contract.
Why don't you care what Melo's salary is after 2015? We need the cap room / flexibility that summer? Unless you plan on doing the full rebuild for next year which would practically be impossible.

i want to see aldrich and tyler play. i will be counting the number of bad shots melo takes too since that is a huge problem.

I would like to see Aldrich but I am sure that Woody will misuse him and then bench him for the rest of the season base on this one performance. Tyler is a nice player but certainly not gaga over him like some on here.
Melo will take lots of bad shots tonight based on (his view of) the lineup. I would love to see him have 3+ assists in the second half. He usually gets most of his assists in the first half.

harvey araton agrees-- but the issue still remains: is melo a smart enough player to execute it, and if so is he willing enough? that is the question for me.

I don't think it has anything to do with brains. JVG said recently that he sees the floor really well and is a really good passes "WHEN HE WANTS TO PASS".
I think someone like Jackson has to convince him to change. He could not convince Kobe but I think Melo is far easier to deal with.
Was a really good article.

Plus, how can you not be optimistic just by the fact that it's not Jimmy making the calls?? Ugh...To be fair you cant blame people for being pessimisticc. The Past 14 years have been kidn of brutal. Although im happy Dolan is finally keeping the hell out of basketball affairs
