These guys are not good interviewers but from what I gather Phil is well aware that the core of the team is not good enough. He mentioned scouring Undrafted players, bench players and foreign players but acknowledge that you don't find franchise talent this way.
I think he will value picks and assets
Doesn't expect Melo to be the kind of playmaker Jordan and Kobe were but thinks he can do better. Defend and rebound better. He acknowledged hat he has improved but wants to see him pass more in certain situations
This guy is on the ball
I caught a little of the interview Phil said it's not paramount that the Knicks sign Melo but would like to have him back. Even said that you could procure talent by S&T for Melo.

He said that? I must've missed it
He really has a grasp on every aspect of rebuilding this team. What a great time to be a knick fan

Yup. Definitely great to hear. You really can only go 2 ways with Melo. Sell him for parts or buy the right aftermarket parts to see him fly.

We never hear such things from knicks. I'd think Donnie, Grunwald, and even Mills has this in their vocabulary but Phil got the cred in his juice card to negotiate it his contract!
I think we got a good idea who wants melo from the trade deadline and what could be obtained in return. Melo still holds the cards because he has to "Sign" for a sign and trade to happen. IF there is a market for him and suitble scenarios for him, we'll be ok.

There really is only 2 teams I see right now that can take on Melo that would benefit us. Houston and Chicago. Any other team doesn't really give us anything back where they would still have good players that Melo can play with.

Blake and the Clippers. Everyone wins. They need the scorer. We get to reboot.

I disagree. If Melo wants the max from someone else then he has to do a sign and trade. If he leaves without a sign and trade, he gets less and we have extra money for the following free agent class anyways. If we give him the money or another star player its the same money-wise basically.
If Melo is resigned I trust that Phil will get the right pieces around him. I'd just be very nervous about finding all new pieces and trying to make it fit. Will the pieces fit seamlessly? I don't want to be capped out again with a mishmosh of talent that doesn't fit and then have to rely on 40yrs olds foreign and dleague players to secure a playoff seed.
That has been our M.O. Over the years
I hope Phil is patient and doesn't jump the gun in trying to make a splash right away. I don't think he will. He's been watching this mess closely from afar going back to the "Clumsy" comments
One thing I can say before Phil, knicks would not do a sign n trade. After Phil Knicks have no problem doing one.
i agree with stephen a smith that melo is likely to leave since next year is going to be a non-starter for the knicks as they position themselves for 2015. pj mentioned 2015 several times yesterday. between that and pj demanding that melo take his game to another level (i wonder if pj belives that melo can) and asking melo to sacrifice money to build a winner here, with the process only starting actually in 2015-2016? he's going to turn 31 by the end of next season.
i don't see melo sticking around.
Yup Melo to Chicago, Houston, DC, Charlotte, LA etc

I don't either. I think he goes to Chicago and that team has the best shot at winning.
I see too many problems with Houston in the playoffs
Melo would be the dumbest guy on the planet to up and leave a team with a president who has 13 rings..lol wheres he going..none of those teams are any closer to winning a championship then the knicks.. They'll either have to gut there team in a S&T, if they have cap space then chances are, they don't have the right pieces

Not sure if I agree with this statement....Phil is BB genius, no doubt, but he's no magician. Its going to take time to build this program back up. Time that Melo may not have.....
Yea Phil is here for at least the next 5yrs baby!
Melo forfeits year 5 and the max contract if he leaves the Knicks, even if it's a sign-and-trade. The 2011 CBA changed the sign-and-trade rules so they don't benefit players anymore.
However, it could still happen because a sign-and-trade is the only thing getting Melo to a contender if he doesn't want to wait another year.
