What should be the expectations for a legit NBA head coach.
How many head coaches in the association are limited and are truly assistants by NBA standards ?
Anybody can be hired as a head coach, but what should be the qualifications in today's NBA ?
You have to be a leader of men. You have to understand who you are coaching and how to manage the personalities to focus on playing together.
Success comes when guys can manage everything and everyone is on the sane page locked in. Knicks don't need supervisor. They need an adequate dispatcher. Put guys in a spot they can succeed and adjust accordingly.
To find that person we need the right leadership upfront that can select the right fit and build accordingly. We got Phil so. ..
starts with a hierarchy and a shared vision from ownership on down.
a plan and an architecture for building a team or infusing new talent into an existing and successful architecture, aka a system.
it helps when the best player is a leader.
coach does not play favorites and is not afraid to discipline any player by gluing them to the bench
coach utilizes as many of his players during the regular season as possible and as often as possible in preparation for playoffs
coach stresses defense and boxing out
Salary?
And the assistants sit in coach on flights to away games.
And assistants are the ones who can end up reviewing tapes for NBDL games.
And writing reports.
And mopping up spilled Pepsi.
Assistants also pay off the ref's, poke holes in the condoms, get the interns lined up, and basically are in cahoots with Stern!
I know stern says "he's retired" but we all know who runs thing!!

Its important for a head coach to get his/her players to buy into their system, know their roles and perform them, and able to fight through adversity. As a team.
The difference between a head coach and an assistant is the assistant hasn't shown yet the abilities of leading a team offensively and defensively. They usually specialize in only one area of the game that's why they are assistants.
A head coach is one who understands the personnel he has on his roster and knows how to utilize their strengths when needed in games. A head coach also has the respect of his players not just because he's head coach , but because he has the ability to command respect how he conducts himself with the team. Head coach must have leadership qualities that knows how to push his players buttons to get the most out of them.
A head coach in the NBA could and should be able to do it all.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here a little bit..There's been a ton of assistant that have made a very easy transitions into head coaching, the list will never end. I think your point has more validity in the NFL then it does in the NBA.
I firmly believe that an assistant coach in the NBA has to be just as sharp as the head coach, maybe even sharper in some areas. Those 2 have to be on the same page almost like a partnership, they need to be able to bounce ideas off of each other, notice little things, weakness, strengths, it's just another set of eyes.
A perfect example was last yr with MDA going to the lakers, he was only allowed to bring his brother, and the lakers had 6 other assistants with more than half having head coach experience, It was the most Motley Crew of assistants I ever saw, no one was on the same page, and it trickle on down to the team and its success.

If they made the transition then they are head coaches. I never said an assistant CAN'T BECOME a head coach.
I'm basically just saying why they're permanent assistant coaches .
Mike Woodson is an assistant coach, but he got a head coaching job.
JVG was an assistant coach IMHO, he just inherited some veteran players when he came on the scene. He couldn't coach offense. How do you think he got those bags under his eyes. LOL
Assistant coaches who aren't making the transition lack what it takes whether it be making decisions under pressure, not good making extra adjustments during a game etc....
A quality HC is someone who can implement a fundamentally sound system, use his players to their strengths, and motivate them to execute properly. Some coaches are still fairly successful despite misusing players because their system is very solid.

Some of these head coaches who are really assistants are give the position by management just as a fill gap until they get their ship together.
Advantage for management is less salary given to the assistant who's elevated to head coach.
