Don't they though? Doc wouldn't be getting paid, and would not be able to coach in the NBA under that scenario...same thing if a player stopped playing.

Did the NBA make a similar statement regarding coaches? Don't know how this pertains to my comment otherwise.

As if Rivers has that out which I don't believe that he does unless he resigns and forfeits payment. So yes the player can choose to do that (which they won't because they can't afford to throw away prime years)
So that is why the reporter asked Silver if perhaps the NBA would grant them free agency (so they won't have to resign and not get paid).
I don't remember if the question was about the coach as well but I think that the question was about the players.
NBA players get traded and thus the contracts are in large with the league as well as the team. If Paul does not "Feel it" playing for Clippers then he can retire, or sit out until the length of his contract runs out. Same for Doc.
It might be more "Polite" for the clippers to "Mutually part ways" with DOC if they wanted to, but players can't do that.
At the end of the day in the short run the family can irradicate Donald Sterling from its organization and players never have to interact with him again.
The players could negotiate buyouts. If all the players want out they could take a percentage of their remaining money then become free agents. ..If they did that, then they would be really on to something. That would speed up the process with sterling selling the team. The nba could then have a dispersal draft under new ownership.

No way that happens. The clippers would be completely devalued. They have never had this good of a team.
Why should the fans get screwed. They have suffered the most.

That works at seasons end but you'd in effect still ahve them on the cap.
Besides, it would lower the value of the team. The league, like they did with George Shinn and the Hornets can run the franchise and then sell it.
So, if it got crazy, that can always happen. The owners are very motivated towards franchise values going up. They want a good price for the franchise.
Dispersal draft only happend when a team went bancrupt and the league let it. That won't happen. The lines of credit are set up to rescue a failing franchise.
