Mike D'Antoni has resigned as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, the team announced Wednesday night.

Mike D'Antoni coached the Lakers to a 27-55 record this season, the worst 82-game mark in franchise history.
D'Antoni stepped down after the Lakers refused to pick up the second year of his contract last week, according to two sources. During conversations with the team over the past two weeks, D'Antoni had asked them to pick up the team option on the fourth year of his deal, according to sources.

D'Antoni had one year remaining on his deal at $4 million. The Lakers held a $4 million team option on him for 2015-16.

"Given the circumstances, I don't know that anybody could have done a better job than Mike did the past two seasons," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said in a statement. "On behalf of the Lakers, we thank Mike for the work ethic, professionalism and positive attitude that he brought to the team every day. We wish him the best of luck."

Los Angeles went 27-55 this season, its first full campaign under D'Antoni. The Lakers posted the second-worst winning percentage (.329) in team history, the worst 82-game record in team history and their lowest win total since the franchise relocated from Minnesota.

"We've hit an insurmountable impasse and Mike will no longer be the Laker coach," D'Antoni's agent, Warren LeGarie, told ESPNLosAngeles.com.

The Lakers will begin a coaching search but a source tells ESPN.com that their immediate focus is on the NBA draft, where they will have at least a top 9 pick and free agency, where they have enough salary cap flexibility to sign a maximum-contract level free agent.

D'Antoni, 62, has posted a 67-87 record since being hired by the Lakers early in the 2012-13 season to replace Mike Brown.

D'Antoni also coached the Suns and the Knicks, reaching two Western Conference finals with Steve Nash in Phoenix before having much less success in New York.

Maybe him and phil can create the seven seconds or less triangle system...lol

Wow. Reports were the lakers wanted him back.

I think he would make an excellent college coach but I guess NBA coaches think that is too far a step down. He will be somebody assistant or studio analyst.
gunsnewing @ 4/30/2014 10:21 PM
I'd say he'd go to Houston but Dwight is there lol

His about golden st or Denver

MDA might have a plan.

He's a quitter and he's being exposed as a mediocre coach

Watch out, these chips are stale!

BigDaddyG @ 5/1/2014 12:09 AM
Ha, Phoenix had success this year running offense that was pretty similar to 's. I think Stache's problems stem from his own stubbornness. That said, a lot mediocre NBA players owe their careers to Stache.

I'm not sure about that. He'll get another opportunity but I doubt it ever comes with a good team. His failed stints in NY and LA have relegated him to being a transitionary coach i.e. a guy that goes to a rebuilding team, gets them to be competitive and then gets fired once they gain any degree of consistency (see Scott Skiles and Jim O'Brein).

He is probably a good fit for a young team like Phx where they will listen to him.

Vets seem to tune him out and/or clash with him.

MDA actually had a 40-32 record with the Lakers last year despite coming into a HOT MESS. This year was not his fault. Who could win with that Laker team? He did a good job with the young talent they had. Marshall really improved as a PG under MDA. MDA is not the coach for guys like Kobe and Dwight Howard. Give him a team with Players that will listen and he'll be fine. A young team with a young PG talent would be a good spot for him.

I would say Philly but MCW can't shoot. He needs a young team with a young PG who can actually shoot.

Maybe it can still work, heck it worked with Duhon and even Felton for .5 of a season.

Yup. Hiring this guy was the biggest mistake of the last 10 years. If we hire a better coach back then, the Knicks are a better team today.

And a better owner and GM!

Can't do anythign about the owner except hope he can let the Knicks do what the Rangers are doing. We have a new GM so we will see. I am cautiously optimistic.

MDA could be a Tex Winter type of asst. Someone who has a unique philosophy on offense that a head coach incorporates into his system. No shame in that. Doubt he does that though. Seems like that would have been a great calling for him.

I don't think so. His system is suited for overseas play. In order to win in the NBA you need to defend and maximize your bigs. His system doesn't do that. Those to things slow down his offense. Even if he was only responsible for offense the team would never never be able to play as a cohesive unit on both ends

You could argue he did a horrible job with that team. He had three hall of famers on the roster. Yeah, it was tenuous situation, but geez.
