I wouldn't make the decision based solely on the roster. He's only got to worry about the NY roster for one season. After that they can rebuild the team to his liking and in GS they pretty much are stuck with the group they have which may not be able to get much better than they are. To be honest if Melo doesn't return then the rebuild is already under way. GS is in somewhat of a win now mode in terms of expectations. Here in NY he can grow into the job and basically have a free pass for a few years as they rebuild the roster. Basically Kerr has to hit the ground running in GS and in NY he can have a more natural grace period as he learns the job.

Exactly Kerr is going to become coach of the Knicks

Papabear Says

No Kerr will be a yes man for Phil. He won't be that way with GS he will be his own man.

As much as I like Mark Jackson and love JVG, Thibs Vogel etc. They will clash with Phil. Completely different approach Kerr works because Phil can mold him. Kerr's never coached with his system. Phil made it clear he doesn't want to hire a retread so if not Kerr it's going to be one of the guys in his circle. Fisher, Cleamons, Rambis, Harper etc

I agree. I think it's Kerr but if not I think he goes with Fisher.

Yes.

Was amazing to see how Durant spoke about him so glowingly as if he was his head coach.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. Phil and Kerr will be partners not unlike Kerr as a player and Phil as his coach. Everything Kerr knows about the Triangle and a winning style of coaching came 1st from Phil with some extra stuff from Popovich. Kerr thinks a lot like Phil and thus it's not about being a yes man. It's about being a LIKE man in that they have very similar views on the game. There's not much to conflict about. Besides Phil isn't a tyrant. His assistants all LOVED working for him and he gave them freedom to try things. Trust me Phil will provide a nurturing environment.
Nalod @ 5/7/2014 10:38 PM
Phil relished when he'd call time out and Kobe and others would figure it out, take ownership of it, then sit back and enjoy the fruits of preparation. Some might do well to read phil's books.

He was about practice and if the players can own it, they can fix it.

Did phil take away from Jordan? Kobe? Their status looms large. If Melo is that petty, then it won't work.

If phil is truly in charge, then Dolan is a layer away. Seems from what I have read GS owner ship is meddlesome and very egotistical. Dolan is as well but he just went thru a process thru Mckesson and hired a big name to take control. So for a while, there could be autonomy.

Advantage Knicks.

Lower expectations. Advantage Knicks.

Roster, GS for now. Unknown in NY. Advantage GS.

Zen vs. Logo working relationship: Knick advantage.

Proximity to home: GS wins.

I don't really know what this dude is going to do.

Yeah because SVG is great at getting along with MGMT

Why is he a no brainer over Kerr?

Because SVG has been successful as a coach. Kerr fits with Phil. It makes sense. I don't see Kerr as a better candidate for other open jobs then a gy like SVG.

Maybe Kerr has a leg up because he played for Phil and POP

Maybe that is why Hornacek was successful since he is a good coach and played for Sloan

I would take D Fisher over SVG because he has played in great system for great coaches and is very respected (though I always hated his shot selection)

Same with JKidd.

A guy like JVG is really smart and a good motivator for spurts but he was a pretty bad offensive coach. Talk about mr ISO's.

I like SVG but a no brainer?

One guy has over 300 hundred wins as a head coach. The other guy is starting his coaching career. If you want to mentor and still be involved in coaching you hire Kerr. If you want a guy to take over roster that is supposed to win immediately you hire SVG.

On the surface maybe ...

There are many guys out there with many wins, Karl, L Hollins, Woody, SVG, MDA, Adelman - that does not make them "better" choices

Newbie's have done really well recently especially with good rosters.

I do think that SVG should be high on the list though.

Fisher would be a good choice for GS too but he did pretty badly there as a player.

I think SVG is a great choice. Also, probably smart to go with a name guy after firing a guy that was very successful. I believe it's been 22 years since the warriors had consecutive playoff appearances. Karl had some struggles in golden state as a young coach. Not sure that he would be brought back even with different ownership.

I want Kerr in NY.

my bet is that stan van gundy gets offered and takes the GS job.
holfresh @ 5/8/2014 10:20 AM
The only reason I'll sign on to Kerr is because that's Phil's guy..I don't want to hear any excuses why Phil isn't successful...I'm not a believer in Phil's system however I'm a believer in Phil...If Kerr doesn't work out, no more of Phil's lackeys..The coaching job is Phil since he insist on running the triangle...

I get why GS and the Lakers want Kerr..It's the easy choice...What can GS management say after firing a guy who gotthem to the playoffs two consecutive times in 20 years??..Well we got the guy who the best mind in Basketball was going after...A great organization like the Lakers thought he was the next big thing, we all were wrong...This is Buss will say it Kerr doesn't work out..Well Phil is a Laker great and he too thought Kerr was the next thing...

You don't seem to be giving him a chance. Let's see how he does ... why are you so sure that he will fail?

I'm a believer in how a coach relates to players and can therefore motivate them...You have seen them the last 20 years or so..Phil, Riley, Doc, POP, etc...Kerr doesn't have that personality, but it's a guess from what little I have seen him over the years...I think a great coach has to be able to turn on the light in a player like Melo to get him to play better ball...Kerr to me doesn't have that swagger...I could be wrong tho...

The fact that he will want the Knick job to be "led" by Phil is another red flag...

meloshouldgo @ 5/8/2014 10:35 AM
I would also agree with the people saying SVG is not necessarily better. When you compare two coaches who have coached for about the same period of time you can use winning a metric. SVG obviously had more experience but he too doesn't have an offensive system or philosophy. Not sure he would be very different from Mark Jackson. I guess it depends on what the Warriors are trying to do.
