Knicks · Source: Phil Jackson Close To Resigning From Knicks Position (page 1)

Until reporters start naming their sources, their headlines and articles are counterfeit

May 11
Source: Knicks Ahead In Steve Kerr Sweepstakes
- Marc Berman, NY Post

May 11
Source: Steve Kerr close to becoming Knicks' coach
- Al Iannazzone, Newsday

May 13
Source: Knicks Remain Favorites For Kerr
- Ian Begley, ESPN

My sources tell me that Phil Jackson is not in charge as much as he thought he was in charge. Secondarily, if Steve Mills is still General Manager, the signal to any coach candidate is that the front office org chart in New York is still a mess.

Can anyone trust a Source?

This thread should be locked. Not clever.

When a 100/1 longshot at the races actually wins, does that make the 100/1 odds from before the race not accurate?

Nope. It simply means that the race happened to be the 1 time out of 100 that the longshot won. It could very well be Kerr preferred the Knicks position but in the end went with GS for whatever reason. He changed his mind at the last moment, GS offered more money or years, whatever.

Just saying.

Nalod @ 5/15/2014 10:26 AM
Good point!

Media in NY is a fierce competitive environment and "Sources" need never be cited unless there are civil damages at stake, and then it can be a sealed disclosure from the public.

Sources tell me (those voices in my head) that mills is the finance guy and Phil is the basketball guy. One can almost reverse the title if you have the owner setting the budget, which is very common. What we don't know is who had the push back on the contract length and was that an issue or a negotiation point? Until GS came back into the picture they were negotiating. My take is Kerr got his 5 years as he had his leverage. GS owner wanted him and had to pay up.

The media frenzy will throw out all kinds of crap and people eat it up. How do I know? Reading many posters on the UK will often follow the sentiments offered and run with it. Media does not produce facts but also opinion that generates some type of emotion. Usually anger sells the best!

Readers also hate to wait and want to be told "Whats next"! Its just entertainment folks............Knicks win or lose the next day we have our lives. Knicks win a championship our lives stay the same. Its just fun!

Been saying this for over 40 years!!!

DJ, the thread title is sarcasim over media misdirection over the last two weeks.

Its a "Fiasco"? The guy got asked if he wanted to coach, asked if he wanted to work for Phil, but we all had knowledge he was very reluctant to leave California. The GS job opened and he was asked twice. Pretty transparent if you ask me. KNicks get lots of coverate while Nets fight for their lives.

Fiasco? Save that for when we fire our next coach.
Fiasco? If PJax actually was leaving because Dolan can't keep his promise.
Fiasco? Isiah returns.
Fiasco? Melo leaves with no compensation to knicks.
Fiasco? Amare signs 5 year contract and gets hurt.
Fiasco? Larry Brown Tenure.
Fiasco? Anucha sues, Knicks don't settle, Goes to court, very Public, Dolan extends Isiah.

And if it makes anyone feel better, I think Nets go nearly $200mil in salary for a second round out is financially a fiasco!!!

DJ - Uncle Phil may not want out, just yet. However, if Dolan had any role in the four weeks of Kerr negotiations, the casual banter between owner, General Manager and President of Basketball Operations could be a bit tense around the water cooler.

Respected poster?

Nah homeslice. Just a Knicks supporter from back in the day who wants to be shaken and wakened when the matter is official.

Lets hope Phil J, gets chance to get thru summer with this
crazy Owner.

I dont think Phil came here for this ! or pie on his face

gunsnewing @ 5/15/2014 11:01 AM
Phil probably shouldn't announce his plans to the media EVER. He will get used to it

This all makes the next coach even bigger. There's even more hype about the job. NY can't lose in this scenario. It's still the Media Capitol and still creates the biggest buzz. There's still a huge list of guys who would want this job.

I feel your pain brother. But maybe there is no evil dictator behind the curtain. Maybe Phil just did his old friend a solid. You have to kind of wonder about the media frenzy surrounding Kerr on a daily basis. I mean really, it's Steve Kerr we're talking about here! 5 years 25M for Steve Kerr. I'm going the other way on this. If Dolan was involved, he would have done what he always does and impulsively overpay.

Jimmy Dol did not want to give Kerr more than 3 years is what I heard (so I guess he did have a role in the four weeks of Kerr negotiations) .... guess the countdown of front office explosion starts now.

Rookie: We all love Uncle Phil. From a strategic point of view, if we take off our orange and blue shades for a moment here is another angle. If a coach (or General Manager) is forever wed to a system, how does that system take precedence over the acquisition of coaches or players?

Are the best coaches the ones who can adapt their coaching philosophies to their roster, or do they simply impose their system on the roster, no matter who wears the uni?

Could Michael Jordan, or Kobe, have been all-world in any system?

If you insert another all star with Carmelo, which one plays defense?

I agree with you this isn't Dolan's decision. He would have paid Kerr whatever he wanted it was Phil who made the decision on what Kerr gets. Don't think every detail of negotiations wasn't run past Jackson because it was. Now watch Phil get a replacement to Kerr for far less and still achieve big results. Phil put Kerr out there and helped him get the contract he got with GS.

Phil probably already knew what Kerr wanted, he probably told Kerr I can't do that high and let the process drag until the Warriors couldn't wait any more and caved. Just a friend help another friend get big money.

Rookie @ 5/15/2014 2:43 PM
I don't think it matters the system unless the players respect the coach and believe in that system. The Knicks I've seen just aren't that disciplined. Phil commands that respect. Let Phil coach!
misterearl @ 5/15/2014 2:44 PM
Wear and Tear

Rookie: By the start of next season, Phil is 69 years old.

Other than a moment to have dinner with his main squeeze, do you get the sense his knees (or hip) are looking forward to the grueling west coach swing as a head coach?

Imagine the media attention if they hire a homophobe as coach! Nobody will be watching the playoffs or the Finals!

1) Phil will announce everything. I thought that was one of the nice changes that occurred. We weren't left waiting for Grunny to make his semi-annual press conference.
2) What's the latest situational on the Herb Williams conspiracy?
3) When was Dolan's meddling not made public before? The Melo trade? IT as the new secret assistant to draft/marketing relations? Our troll owner is going to eff up his new Prez's latest big deal and not leak a single, smug word? I doubt it. Jimmie doesn't care if he looks like an idiot going back on his word. That much has been documented.
