Knicks · Why Not Send Melo to the Celtics? (page 2)

They just blew up their team and traded two beloved players in Pierce and Garnett so they can do a full rebuild from the ground up; they're not going to blow up that plan because 30-year old Melo is available. They blew up their team because KG and Pierce were not capable of being cornerstones of their franchise anymore. They kept Rondo because he still has that ability. Is there any doubt that Melo is also a franchise player and would make for a potent 1-2 punch with him?
When Boston traded picks and youth for Allen and KG, those guys were 33 and 31 years old respectively. Is it a stretch to imagine that they'd do it again, considering that they have an established star already in Rondo and a buttress of cap space in 2015?
They traded picks and youth only after they missed out on the Durant/Oden lottery. And they had Rondo AND Pierce already on the team, not just Rondo. And Allen and Garnett were better players than Melo.
Well, they are projected to miss out on Wiggins, Parker and Embiid who are the Oden/Durant of this years draft. So why wouldn't they trade the pick?
I agree that Garnett was a better player than Melo but Ray Allen definitely wasn't IMO. In any case, it's a game of fits (not individual game), which Melo and Rondo should do exceedingly well. And when you have those two, how much more do you really need to build a contender?

We could take back their pick that is projected to be 5th overall and the 17th pick in return. Meanwhile, Melo has supposedly been interested in playing with Rondo for sometime. On top of that, Melo still gets his big market notoriety. With a good amount of cap space set to open up for them in 2015, the Celtics could really start making moves around this Rondo-Melo core. Celtics would not do that in a million years.
The Celtics have already traded away a 5th pick for a 32 year old Ray Allen. Is it crazy to think that they'd do it for a 30 year old Carmelo?
They did it because he was a final piece to a starphuck
That's wrong. The Celtics got Allen before they traded for KG. It was more than a month after the fact that they made the 2nd deal with the Wolves; to be exact, Ray Allen was traded on June 28th and KG was traded on July 31st.
well ... not final but part of a (very dangerous) starphuck that off season.
And ... that was then, this is now. Picks are viewed differently now, teams are far more cautious after watching the car wreck pick trades.
I don't think there is any chance that they would do it for the 5th pick let alone the 5th and 17th.
Picks have always been picks. The philosophy about making picks changes but the value of picks seldom has. Before this great enlightenment period happened that you're alluding to, how many picks in the top 10 were traded outright? I bet that it's not very much different than today.

Or anyone, at this stage in his IR-strewn career? That would leave Melo playing 50-60 games a season with ...Brandon Bass and Jeff Green.
Yeah, I'm sure Melo would be all excited about that. Rebuilding in Boston while praying for Rondo's knees.
^^ This.

Ok ... so you think the Celtics would make such a deal? Someone would be fire for even suggesting it.

Yes.
I, MY FRIEND, ARE YOUR SOURCE.
I actually would like to do a three way with the Bucks and The Sixers for the 1 and 2 plus 2 future 1's for Melo, Amare and Bargs.
Unless you can tell me why, I think that we should work on this one.

Wouldn't it be great if they walked away on draft night with a 10 season vet, who is one of the NBA's elites in scoring....

Carmelo Anthony has a player option for $23.5 million next season. Only one player -- Kobe Bryant -- made more than $23 million this year, and yet there's a notion out there that an unhappy Anthony will opt out of his contract with the Knicks for greener pastures.Despite this overwhelming bit of information, Boston talk radio has been buzzing this week with the possibility that Anthony will join Rajon Rondo and Kevin Love (that deal's already done, right?) in Boston and form a new Big Three. In a well-researched post, CelticsLife.com details the embarrassing level of financial gymnastics it would take for the Celtics to end up with a lineup of Rondo, Love, Anthony, Larry Sanders, and the No. 17 pick with no salary cap room to wiggle with and no bench.
How did this all start, anyway? How does any of this start? In answering a question about Love Monday, Rondo tried to comment on the absurdity of answering speculative questions about another player.
“We could talk about Kevin [Love] all day or we can insert Carmelo [Anthony’s] name in there all day," Rondo told reporters. "Nothing’s happened. We have a couple days left before the draft. Things might shake up around that time. You never know. It’s still a long summer until the beginning of training camp.”
In bringing up Anthony, Rondo was dropping the name of another superstar on par with Love. As innocuous as it may have been, though, the reference has fueled another round of speculation from Celtics fans rabid at any bit of news in this period of limbo. Rondo's name drop, combined with the uncertainty of the offseason, has actually led some fans to lend credence to stories like this, in which "The Love deal is pretty much done" and "Melo is the primary target", according to "an insider at RealGM.com." Oh, and Tyson Chandler is coming to Boston, too.
It's best to leave the acquiring of players to the guy with the power to actually do it, and I don't put anything past Danny Ainge either way. But even if the Celtics could acquire Anthony, should they?
