Knicks · take a look NYK 20+ year history of trading picks.. (page 1)

So what happened to all those picks since 1987? Let's review:

1988 - 11th overall pick went to Bulls in a swap of picks via the Charles Oakley trade. Bulls took Will Perdue. Knicks grabbed Rod Strickland at No. 19.

1989 - No. 22 pick went to Blazers (Byron Irvin) via Kiki Vandeweghe trade.

1993 - No. 26 pick went to Orlando (Geert Hammink) via 3-team trade (Clippers) for Charles Smith and Doc Rivers.

1995 - No. 24 pick went to Mavericks (Loren Meyer) via Rolando Blackman trade.

1998 - No. 16 pick went to Rockets (Bryce Drew) from Blazers, originally from Chris Dudley trade.

2000 - Acquired No. 18 pick from Raptors in Dudley trade, then flipped it later to 76ers for rights to Mirsad Turckan.

2001 - No. 18 pick went to Rockets (Jason Collins), originally to Suns in Luc Longley trade.

2002 - No. 7 pick (Nene) went to Nuggets via Antonio McDyess trade.

2004 - No. 16 pick (Kirk Snyder) went to Jazz, originally to Suns in Stephon Marbury trade.

2006 - No. 2 pick (LaMarcus Aldridge) went to Bulls in Eddy Curry trade.

2007 - No. 9 pick (Joakim Noah) went to Bulls as swap in Curry trade. Used No. 23 to take Wilson Chandler.

2010 - No. 9 pick (Gordon Heyward) went to Jazz, via Suns, via Marbury trade.

2012 - No. 16 pick went to Rockets (Royce White) via Jared Jeffries/Jordan Hill salary dump trade.

2014 - Lottery pick goes to Magic (Dwight Howard trade) via Nuggets via Carmelo Anthony trade.

So that's a lot of first round picks that went unused. The most damage, so far, came from the McDyess, Marbury and Curry trades. Four of the five picks lost turned out to be lottery picks. Of course the Anthony trade still has to be judged because of the lottery pick status. The Nuggets also can swap 2016, which goes to the Raptors via the Andrea Bargnani trade.

The Knicks won the NBA's first lottery drawing in 1985 (Patrick Ewing), but haven't won a draft lottery since the new system was implemented. There is a 0.7% chance their slot -- owned by the Magic -- comes up at No. 1.

But it won't...right?

IMO IT set the franchise back 10 yrs

it pains me to read that

We gave up two first round picks just to get rid of Jared Jeffries deal lol The last 10 years are brutal!

Extremely, I mean I don't mind trading picks, but trading picks to dump salary seems counter productive at best

It was all in for Lebron ... too bad that didn't work out as hope at least we got a consolidation prize

Downright depressing

Walsh and IT were both stupid in their own ways, the early trades were not bad at all

The one I am annoyed the most at is 2002 trading Nene for McDyess. Losing out Joachim Noah for Eddy Curry is sad too.
VCoug @ 5/20/2014 5:15 PM
Holy shit, I knew all of these except for Gordon Heyward. We could be building around a nucleus of Noah, Aldridge, and Heyward right now. Holy shit. You put one more shooter and a decent PG (Lin?) and we're competing for the ECF every year.

This is why I want to stop trading draft picks and start trading FOR them.

gunsnewing @ 5/20/2014 5:21 PM
Same here. The Marbury for Heyward shook the hell out of me.

You guys are forgetting one important thing.....We sucked at drafting. Isiah was best at finding talent and I wish he was hired in that roll, vs giving him the world. But outside of him, I don't think we would've drafted these guys anyway, so it's not as painful as you think.

The whole, "Hey guys it's ok we made a whole bunch of terrible trades that damaged the team for years because we would have fucked up the draft anyway" argument doesn't exactly make me feel better.

blkexec @ 5/20/2014 5:58 PM
If I had enough time, I could put a list together of the guys we drafted.....and on that same line, the guys we pasted up. That upsets me more than anything. As far as making trades and trying to improve the team, I'm ok with those mistakes. But for example, drafting a forward like Hill, during a draft full of PG's....when our clear weakness was at the PG position. That upsets me the most! That's similar to an unforced turnover. Those mistakes should never happen!

This. Up there with Walsh's worst moves during his tenure.

Why? Unlike Curry, Marbury actually performed admirably before the tires fell off in 2009.

Because I know about Noah and Aldridge but had forgotten about Heyward

Yeah. I was shocked by that also. Knicks got Marbs in 2004.
NardDogNation @ 5/20/2014 6:09 PM
On the glass is half full side of thinking, I'm surprised to see that we actually did the right thing by trading those picks. We clearly won out in trading Bill Cartwright and our pick (Will Purdue) for Charles Oakley and Rod Strickland. Both the guys we got were quasi-allstars and played at that level for nearly a decade. How about Deert Hammick for Doc Rivers (6th man) and Charles Smith (starter)? And I think Kirk Snider for Stephon Marbury is more than okay in my book.

Where we started screwing up with picks was during the Layden era. From that point on, it's been a routine shit-show.
