Only way Melo can be signed and traded is if the other team is under the cap.....correct?
If Melo opts in, could they trade him or is there a waiting period? I'm assuming you might have to wait a few months before he could be traded at that point....not sure. Anybody know?
These are huge determining factors that will impact how this off season plays out.
If Melo opts in he could be traded at any time, but that wouldn't benefit anybody except the Knicks.
For sign-and-trades, teams over the tax apron can't receive more salary than they send. Teams over the cap can trade subject to the salary matching rules.
I thought his contract contained an option to opt out - that he doesn't have to opt in - just not exercise the opt out.
I could be wrong, but that is how I understood this to work.
only way he doesn't opt out his if he NO ONE is offering him the $$$ and contract he wants and if Lebron and/or Heat do not recruit him to join the dark side
As for Lebron and Melo, not many teams can afford both those players, but many teams could afford one of those players and would become instant contenders if they signed them to their teams with all their assets/future picks/ and talent on their team
King's really F'ed up by not combining both Drummond with Cousins, with every other team like Bobcats that didn't take a chance on the high potential that could be the new young D12

If love is off the table this year and he kills Melo's market, then the knicks may low ball him and he would be forced to opt in. Hard to see this happening but if it does then once again, with love off the table, Melo becomes more valuable as a 2015 FA.

"Opt in" is just the phrase we use to describe it, but that's how it works. There's basically a deadline where Melo has to decide to be a free agent or not. If he doesn't opt out, New York could trade him anytime.

so - can we even offer him anything until he opts out? Meaning - as the poster above suggests - can he even gauge his market value (from us) before he opts out?
The way I am understanding it - once he opts out, he could end up stuck with us if no one else wants him.
The Knicks could offer him a contract extension, but it's less salary technically than if Melo were to opt out and then sign again (basically, Melo gets a fifth year by exercising his ETO and then re-signing). The only way for Melo to get a guaranteed 5th year under the current CBA is to opt out and start next regular season with the Knicks. Otherwise, he's limited to a 4-year deal.
He could be stuck with the Knicks if nobody else he wants to go to wants to sign him outright and the Knicks refuse to negotiate a sign-and-trade. He has to opt out before he can publicly speak to GM's because it's against tampering rules for general managers to talk free agency with players under contract.
I'm guessing that Melo would want Phil to verbally agree to give Melo veto power over what team he is traded to. I know he doesn't want to end up in a small market, cellar dweller.

This is the part that surprised me about "Opting In"

If he opts in and re-signs in 2015, Anthony's total contract would be worth $140,875,420, and he'd be making $164,208,823 if you include his 2014-15 salary.
Man a little patience on Melo's part could land him a HUGE pay day with NY. It's not a bad pitch to make to him if your the Knicks.
