Fishmike mentioned we might not have the full MLE. Why not? Is this part of the new CBA?
I think it's about if you are over the cap, and if so, you only get it every other year and we splurged on JR. I could be wrong.

I believe you are wrong. Jr had nothing to do with it because the knicks were already over the cap. I also believe that it is a yearly exception because the knicks used it on Kidd and then again the following year on Prigs/Metta

There are a couple of different MLE's. The ~$5-6M and the $3M. I thought Kidd, Prigs, Metta were on the $3M?

They were. The 5M is for non tax paying teams. The knicks would be tax payers regardless of JR's contract.
I think its the LLE thats every two years (or is it the Bi annual exemption?!). MLE is $5mil if you're under the apron, $3mil per year if you're over (which we are). I could be wrong though- this new CBA is so damn confusing

*if you are over the luxury tax
Every team in the league over the salary cap is allowed to use the MLE; whether that team is too far above the apron (or more accurately, would be too far over the apron after using the MLE) or not determines how large an MLE a team has. Teams above the cap but below the apron have about $5.3M they can use; teams over the apron only have around $3.2M.
The Bi-Annual exception, sometimes called the LLE, can't be used 2 years in a row and only teams below the apron have it.
